    So much truth here. I've been a dark Autumn through my adult life and now at 66 many of those colors don't look right on me. I've lightened and softened and am loving some summer colors. My husband is a winter and just doesn't hold the intense colors as he used to.

    16:13 thank you for that message. So encouraging!! An aging autumn here & i was only somewhat recently analyzed as a true autumn, but don’t think I look good in about half the palette. Lol like all the super warm colors look off (terracottas & oranges & even the yellows). Anyway, I’ve been trying out different colors feeling completely lost. And I have very similar coloring to you both but I’m in the process between you two. 😂 hair is the factor that I think forces us to at some point face the color reality. I got tired of always highlighting my hair & have tried to color match my roots several times. The colorists have matched my roots from ash blonde to medium golden brown… 😑 I feel like I don’t look terrible in anything, but I don’t look good either. Haha stuck in color purgatory.

    I agree so much with this. I've gone from a winter to white hair, very fair skin, and light eyes that are more blue than the original green. All three have lost colour. I'm softening up my colours and choosing more pastels. Navy is my neutral as black is too harsh. My mum's dark brown eyes went to blue by her 80s, so I wasn't surprised to see mine at 61. Thank you for this!

    Looking at palms is such a great idea! And this is very helpful. I was born a natural medium/dark redhead with both auburn and bright red hair (and golden streaks), neutral/warm skin and light brown eyes with hazel ring/gold flecks. My palms look like Sara's. My hair started darkening and going more brown in my 40s as well as graying. Now that I'm in my mid 50s, the bright red hair is white and the other hair is cool grey (I'm dying it to keep it a warm auburn). Cool tones in my hair absolutely do not go with my skin tone. It makes me look lots more blah - I definitely have to color my brows or my face fades away. Light greys, cool tones and greyed out tones drain me now, but perhaps I need to just wait another 20 years :D? I also just read something that said the color temperature can change but not your value and chroma? Because you both are still soft...

    I love learning about color from y'all. When I was 50 my hair stylist told me my hair was getting darker. I was very light blond as a child. I was near 65 or so when gray appeared. I'm now 76 and still have mostly medium brown hair. By the way I am a winter.

    I think I was much closer to a winter when I was younger. I knew I wore cooler colours better and was drawn to bright colours and bold prints. As my hair became grey I found myself wearing softer colours more often. I have been draped as a dark summer now.

    I’ve been a pale, light blue eyed red head in my youth. I was diagnosed as a spring in the 1980’s. Now at 62 my hair has turned white, and had my colors redone . I’m now a summer. I still have some red running through my hair. I had a hard time switching to a summer. But as I aged, I could tell the colors I once loved on me no longer worked. You guys have helped me so much.

    Very interesting. I am 76. I was analyzed as a summer more than 30 years ago, and I am still a summer, but I think 'soft' summer is a better description. I have very little gray hair, but my dark ash blonde/light ash brown hair has lightened a lot. I think you could find light blonde, dark blonde, silver, and gray in my hair if you look carefully. I don't color it; in fact, I like it a lot more than I did when I was younger. Probably because my hair is lighter, there's less contrast in my face as a whole as there used to be. My palm looks a lot like Lucinda's but with more pink. My eyes are still blue-gray-green, but they seem to be less green than they used to -- less mela(whatever they are)s? I recently found a cool toned foundation and brown eye shadow, and I think they both help my overall look. Keep doing these videos!

    I experience something that I've also heard isn't possible, my best colors change with the seasons. I can happily wear black in the winter but it's my worst choice when the sun is bright. Where I live the sun blazes bright from late spring until late fall and it really changes what colors I can wear. 😅

    I'm a year younger than Lucinda. Another color change I experienced, maybe because I had light auburn hair was that from 50-now my non-silver hair (about 35%) of it got much darker. I bought the Color Me Beautiful book back in university and the author told us the our seasons would never change, but we needed to keep dying our hair if we were Springs & Autumns! Hi. I think that the color shift is more evident in white/ Caucasian people than more melanated ppl. My family are all POC (medium brown skin, dark brown eyes, black hair during youth). My mom is now almost totally grey. I think she was a warm autumn before but now she's a soft autumn. Her undertone is still warm but less than during her youth. I'm also a warm autumn (can wear dark autumn & warm spring colors) but I expect that as I age, I'll be more of a soft autumn.
    Lucinda did say that people with brown eyes are less prone to changes than those with lighter colored eyes.
    There's also a vlogger ("my over 50 fashion life" or similar). She was an autumn before in her youth (using the 4 season system). I suspect that she was a warm autumn if in the 12 season system. Now that she's gone grey, she had herself re-analyzed. Her dominant characteristic now was "soft". As such, she can wear soft autumn & soft summer colors. The warm autumn colors are now too strong/ warm for her.
    Thanks for the vid!

    • @ColorClassInc
      @ColorClassInc  4 місяці тому +1

      Precisely correct. When I was in transition I was soft and used the universal color palette, which looks very much like the “soft” palette. I got quite cool by age 67, but I use self tanner in the summer to give me a little extra “life” and my summer clothes are more universal than my fall and winter clothes. I believe that we move in and out of palettes especially when we get narrowed down to 12 and 16 palette systems. We just need to fully understand the palettes and use them as tools not rules. 😉

    I think also people in the media would be a good example of why some women colour their hair blonde later in life when they weren't blonde before. The brunette singer from abba comes to mind. Also I think Julia Roberts had blondish hair for a while and has made the transition back to auburn in recent years.

  • @CuriousJS

    Thanks for addressing this! I’m one of those people whose color palette is changing. My hair used to be a neutral to golden brown in my early 20s. I’m now 37 and my hair is 50% gray(primarily in the front side of my head) and the hair that’s not gray has no red or golden tones to it at all. I’ve been analyzed as a warm spring by Carol Brailey and a Blue autumn by House of colour. It has been suggested by both systems to warm up/ color my hair. I can’t deny that I do look more vibrant when my hair has some warmth to it but it takes so much effort to maintain that I’m just giving up on it. I either change the colors I’m wearing to harmonize with my gray hair or have my head look separate while trying to make the warm neutrals and colors work. So crazy!

    • @CuriousJS
      @CuriousJS 4 місяці тому +2

      I also want to add, my House of Colour consultant told me my skin undertone is more neutral-warm. She explained although I’m an autumn my best colors are actually the coolest colors within the autumn palette.

    • @MaryYoungblood-xy8vg
      @MaryYoungblood-xy8vg 4 місяці тому +1

      I can see the confusion. I am a warm spring and warm is the order of the day. I have zero cool features in my coloring profile. I sit on the border of spring and autumn (two warm seasons). The "blue autumn" palette in House of Colour is equivalent to Deep Autumn in any other system and is an Autumn/Winter border palette. A person in this group should have fairly dark hair and eyes to get away with Autumn's deepest colors. The summer flow palette for them and everyone else is the "soft autumn" palette and that isn't the one they placed you in. The spring/autumn border palettes where warm is the obvious feature are golden spring and vibrant autumn. Obviously something is off to get two very different results from professionals who both use a 16-palette seasonal flow-true system. If you don't have red hair after puberty or your sandy hair isn't very golden or coppery (hair), if your skin isn't obviously golden (mine is a very fair apricot color) in the yellows (but not sallow) or oranges (skin) and your eyes don't have obvious yellow undertones (blues are greenish, greens are goldish, ambers are golden as are browns) than I would rule out the warm spring. If you don't have dark hair or eyes or both I would rule out the blue autumn.

    • @CuriousJS
      @CuriousJS 4 місяці тому +1

      @@MaryYoungblood-xy8vg I’m really starting to question if I’m not just SOFT. My hair has no red or gold highlights, except when I was younger and spent a lot of time out doors and my skin is not golden or yellowish. My eyes are greenish gray, no blue tones. During my in-person analysis with HOC we saw I looked best in warmer colors but noted I did not look as great in yellows and oranges. So naturally, I was shocked to receive a Warm Spring result from Carol. Every example of Warm seasons show people who have obvious warmth to their hair and skin. I think I’m just going to follow the soft color palette, it’s the only one that makes sense for me.

We need, just as you are doing, to customize our palettes to flatter us, period.

    I have no idea why your video ended up in my feed, but I was excited to watch it and validate what I’d figured out on my own. When I was younger, a color analysis showed I was so neutral I could wear nearly any color, except camel/beige hues which washed me right out (no classic trench coats for me!). I could wear bright white and black very well. But in my sixties I noticed black really washed me out and camel somehow looked great! I decided for myself that my skin had gone from neutral to warm, my now lighter brown eyes have a ton of gold and green flecks (warm) and I dye my hair a warmer color. I’m a soft autumn now. I had to switch out my wardrobe over time.

    This was such an incredibly validating video! In my fb groups I tell people I was born white, and by late teens adults it's dark brown often mistaken as being black, my dad was the same way as a child, and then now that I am on chemo it's nuked my melanin and here we go again losing my color lol. And people have argued so much with me on it too that there's noooo way that's not true, not possible, not accurate. You're cool, not neutral, not olive, not bright, yada yada. Mhmm, mhmm. Right, tell that to my poor father who sat next to two little blonde babies my brother and I with people questioning if my mom was unfaithful or if we were kidnapped (yup happened a lot actually lol.)
    This also makes sense why too my Zyla color method results were so shocking for me, my palms in particular were like almost reddish orangey brown. And aligns to my cool(er) for a neutral undertone, than leans slightly warmish. This gives me so much confidence for people always questioning my season so much (which I know now as of recent is Bright Winter crossing to Bright Spring) and I def am not going to question it any longer or let people get me all confused. Loved this so much you ladies are wonderful. Answered all my constant questions for you in one video so I hope this helps others as much as it as me. 😁🙏

    • @MusingOnBeauty
      @MusingOnBeauty 4 місяці тому +2

      Hi, person trained in makeup here :) Fundamentally your foundation is matched to your skin/overtone and has nothing to do with your undertone (we use that word wrongly). You can be in a warm season with a cool skintone and vice versa. In mac, compared to other brands, you have to think of ‘NC’ as ‘not cool’ (aka warm, yellow based) and NW as ‘not warm’ (aka cool, red based). This is a trick to remember how to navigate them :) Mac considers that red is warm and yellow is cool so that’s why they use a different system.

      Ah MAC foundation- I’ve developed cosmetics and skincare for thirty years, and while I use MAC occasionally, their naming conventions are the most non- user friendly in the industry IMHO. I will include a link to a web subdomain where they attempt to explain it. My personal recommendation is to drop into a Target that sells MAC in their Ulta store in a store- and try them on. If you can decode this- let me know 😊. www.maccosmetics.com/foundation-shade-finder

I understand we can wear anything we want but the official palettes dont have those. If autumns can wear a ‘warm’ green why cant winters wear a ‘cool’ yellow. Or maybe a shade of peach or orange that may be suitable. Please do a video on it if possible. Im a winter but i love oranges and yellows and corals and peaches

    If a winter dyes their hair blonde to cover grey ( a very cool blonde ) does this mean they may inadvertently become summer ? If this is possible would staying blonde mean not looking one’s best if it’s moved the season ?

    Thanks for this - although I still can never make up my mind about myself. Both my brother and father changed from brown eyes to fully green as they aged - murky green... not clear... and at my age (same as Lucinda) my eyes have gone from fully brown to partially green/golden brown. Science says it doesn't happen - I've got photos! I'm in FL so always a bit tan - graying but not there yet. Black is no longer my friend near my face.

      I was 70 earlier this year and yes my colouring has changed too. I was diagnosed by CMB as a deep autumn many years ago, but my eyes have gone from deep olive green with rust brown ring around pupil and spodges here and there, to lighter green. The rust ring has gone completely to be replaced by some yellow and grey bits and a grey ring around the iris. This has cooled down my colouring considerably, as Sara and Lucinda kindly verified. I still dark hair, but about a third grey, so colour it all to blend in together, a much lighter, softer, cooler brown. This seems to work with the eye colour. The rusts and olives I used to wear now look really off against my skin, but found I can wear cooler forest and pine greens I could not do beforehand.

    Our eyes definitely have lightened. Thankfully at 50 we thanks to our late dad our hair is not grey. We’ve are still pale gals.

    You guys would love Bobbi Brown, the makeup artist. Her whole theory in helping aging women and their makeup is based on warming up the skin bc we lose color as we age. I didn’t understand that at first bc it just seemed like all her makeup was extra warm.

      I will tell you anything you want/need. First of all, I use Naked Teddy by MAC a lot. I also use Elf - Dirty Talk. And here is my secret - when I need to cool down a lipstick I use “plumy” lip gloss on top like MAC LoveChild.

    I agree, though it's heresy to most color analysts. Skin color changes, eye color changes, and skintone is the last thing anyone should use to find seasons. I'm a soft autumn with neutral skin, though it skews a bit cool, which technically shouldn't be true, but it is.

    Your videos are so helpful. I’ve had such a hard time figuring out my season and I think you’re helping me crack the code. I think I have figured out that I am soft and lean cool so believe I’m a soft summer. But, is it possible that some soft autumn colors look better? My skin tone is light but leans medium. My hair is reddish brown underneath and blondish grayish on top as it grows out. I also love it when you put up pictures to reference since I’m a visual learner.

      Both Sara and I are visual learners and communicators- so stick around. Seasons are just averages, the more you know the more personalized it becomes.

    When I first had my colours done my hair was dyed to ginger-red and I was told I was an autumn. Years later my hair is salt-and-pepper but mostly grey around my face and I cannot wear those dark colours anymore. I tend to wear the spring palette, especially light turquoise, but I'm increasingly convinced that my skin is neutral. I'm curious, Lucinda, did the same happen to you (I'm also 67, btw)? How did you go from a warm palette to a cool palette? Did you go through a "neutral" phase? I've read both that "there is no such thing as neutral skin" and "of course, you can be neutral and blessed with being able to wear anything." Help!

      I did go through a phase where I leaned on the SOFT palette in the 6 Dominant Characteristics plus the Universal Palette. Check out that video- it might help. -Lucinda

    Health, more so than age, affect these things. Which means, we can always improve our skin and eyes. I'm going to say hair color too, since stress can turn hair white, but then "recover".
    Fascinating topic. Thank you for sharing.

    Does the undertone change with age? Or only the overtone?

    • @MaryYoungblood-xy8vg
      @MaryYoungblood-xy8vg 4 місяці тому

      It depends. Some people it changes in a subtle way, others more drastically and some not much at all. Everyone sees changes to their value (they will lighten or darken) or their chroma (they will brighten or soften). We gain pigment until our twenties (best time to get first analysis BTW) and then start to lose pigment bit by bit after that. You should start to do regular check ins with making sure you are in the right palette frequently after age 45 or so.

      Soft Autumn's sister from a different mister is Soft Summer. They will cover this on their videos on the 6, 12, and tonal systems videos. It is more important that your colors be soft than they be warm/cool or deep/light if you are soft dominant. As a soft autumn you will be slightly warmer/deeper than the summer but a lot of colors will be shared between the two palettes.

      Lucinda is soft enough that if she dyed her hair red, she could adjust her palette and makeup to autumn and it would work. It is the cool dominant summers and winters that run into trouble here. See Doris Roberts (cool winter) in her Christmas Vacation look or Kate Winslet (cool summer) in her Titanic look for examples of the failure. Us warm dominant's struggle in reverse. I can't dye my hair platinum blonde or black and make myself summer or winter. I just look drained, tired, and out-of-palette like I have a cheap wig on.
