Being a redhead is a blessing and a curse. We’re so rare that people often ignore our existence. People fetishize us and you get made fun of all the time. But at the end of the day, there will always be those old ladies in grocery stores that tell us how “people pay so much money for that color”

It’s SO AMAZING to find a video specifically directed at redheads for this! So much color typing just flat out ignores that redheads exist, or give you jumbled non-answers because we don’t fit very neatly into the boxes that everyone else tends to. I’m a warmer redhead, and look terrible in silver, but fantastic in the royal blue and “cool” colors, and it just ends up confusing people. The recognition that redheads “change” undertones is really insightful! Thank you for making this video!

Very help full. I've tried colour analyzing myself and I came out as a Warm Spring/True Spring. only for my boyfriend to say to me I look better in darker colour and those really don't exist in true/warm spring colour swatch. at my palest I think I fit a Bright Winter, my eyes are dark, my skin super pale and bright and the places I see most pigment are pink the veins on my wrists are blue and purple. Oh also I can't really tan I burn too easy peel and go back to being pale.

I've always wondered why red content in the hair is considered warm but in the skin is seen as cool (because of the stereotype pink tones = cool, and pink tones comes from the presence of red in the skin)
I love your system and the fact you take red as neutral, or as I call it an "extra"

I agree! I was determined to be light, bright and warm (light red hair & skin with bright green eyes). I though I was a Light Summer forever and felt so washed out in my pale, muted clothes…all because of that redness that doesn’t factor in, if it’s a skin condition, but is otherwise cool? It doesn’t make sense. Pastels and muted colors are gorgeous colors on some, but I need warmth and brightness! I just bought my first lime green dress, since I was 11 and got so many compliments!

This is a great video for extremely light skinned individuals and redheads. Often this skin tone is seen as too pale by society and getting a fake or real tan is the solution. When in fact clear and radiant is such a beautiful season. This should be embraced by wearing these amazing bright cool colours not many people look good in

@@giselerose8391 YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES I always loved bright pinks, purples, teals, cool greens. When I got into colour analysis a few years ago I was inmediately seen as an 'autumn' because of my golden-reddish hair and greenish grey, muted eyes. I always disliked oranges, yellows and browns though... But started wearing them anyway while still fawning over a brilliant berry red. Because I don't exactly look good in those colours, I always just said I 'prefer this muddy olive' when people asked me why the fuck I would wear those colours and not, I dunno, a gorgeous emerald green? I also started sayign I prefer gold over silver for this reason, and got rid of my silver jewellery (don't worry: it's cheap fantasy jewellery crap) Now it's hard to explain to people that I *actually* prefer brilliant cool shades. And that they actually look perhaps better on me. I am not sure yet wether I am cool & delicate or cool & radiant, in between it seems. I am not a hardcore redhead, but am definitely very pale and have very golden tones in my hair which has the typical 'redhead complexion' look with my pale skin.

I’m a redhead and this is so validating! I morph between cool bright in winter to cool delicate/neutral in summer and find I can wear A LOT of bright colors all the time, and warm tones always make me look blah. I feel like the simplest test too is white vs off white and I look AWFUL in yellowish off white/beige. The old school color typists are so misleading. I have a red head complexion (translucent fair skin, golden brown hair) and am perplexed when consistently complemented in bright blue when professional analysis results are always Soft Autumn! This is the most wonderful video! I'm a redhead who always thought I was warm toned. I was formally draped by a "Color Me Beautiful" consultant in 1986 who said I was an autumn. The palette of little fabric swatches that she gave me included the usual autumn colors, but also some bright purples, teals, and aquas. For a long time they all looked great on me. As I've gotten older, I've been feeling sorta washed out, and like there isn't enough contrast between my skin and my clothes when I wear the warm tones. I've been looking at photos of ladies like Julianne Moore wearing fuchsia and berry lipstick and blush and wondering, hmmmm..... I now realize that as I age, I'm losing pigment in my skin. My freckles are a warm orange color, but they are so faded that the blue veins show through more. I wear sunscreen year round, and it's February, so I'm at my palest. Maybe I'll adopt a warm palette in the summer when I have a little more pigment, and a cooler jewel toned palette when I'm paler. Thanks again for explaining the process of changing colors - I'm grateful!

I had a Color me Beautiful done in 1989, and was typed as Contrasting Autumn Panache. 2 years ago I was one of many that had a quick guess done by a lady on UA-cam. I cooled off apparently because I was typed as Soft, Cool, Medium, (a Soft Summer) When I look at the old color palette I can see how I avoided some of the orange and yellows because they made my skin look even pinker. Then I realized most of those colors were universal ones and most people warm or cool could wear them! My new color swatches have universal plus cool only and when I wear a cool soft color I stand out, not the color. This stuff fascinates me, lol.

even though you lose some pigment with age your warm undertones remain. You just need to reduce the intensity of the colours your choose. Undertones are for life and all redheads have warm undertones. There is literally no such thing as neutral undertones in any colour, whether it's in nature, human skin, or manufactured fabrics, flooring or house paint. The only colour with zero undertone is pure white.

I identify as a redhead, even though my strawberry blonde tones from childhood have darkened to a more ashy reddish-brown these days (and are now starting to go grey). I'm extremely pale, with freckles and rosy undertones. I never tan; I always burn. I've always failed to get a good answer from those seasonal colour analysis quizzes. This is the closest I've ever seen to an explanation as to why my best colours have always been cool and radiant, even though all the systems keep insisting I should look good in pale pastels (which are TERRIBLE on me) or soft warm camels and tans (which are ALSO TERRIBLE on me). I appreciate this video more than you know.

This is the best video on color theory I've ever seen. I feel confident now that my skin tone is 'warm and delicate'. I only wish you had used a few more examples for that subtype, as after all you said it's the most common. Still, I feel like my understanding of my color tones has increased in leaps and bounds. It's so hard for me to do makeup, because I have a lot of distinctly red, blue, and yellow areas all over my face.

@Merriam Style I'd love to see your thoughts on what shades on red hair look best on different skin tones including olivey-shades and those who are mixed race/ born with ginger hair and dark skin. It's refreshing to hear you say a redhead could be any of the 4 skintones, most color analysis' say box-dye ginger hues should be reserved only for the palest of cool undertones-but we know that's a lie. Models like Carmen Solomon, who seems warm delicate, and vogue model Tanisha Kwayie comes to mind. There's so little on redhead color analysis to begin with, and much less on those who are of non-European decent, so this was much appreciated! Keep em comin' Merriam!

Thank you for making this video, it is life changing for me. I have done a million colour analysis quizzes and I always come out some kind of "warm spring", for so long I have just pulled the colours from there that work best (I think navy and turquoise and Kelly green are often included) but my "season" never explained why I looked so great in royal blue and emerald green, I knew for a fact that optic white was much nicer on me than cream, and try as I might I never could make any browns work with my colouring, but I persisted because I couldn't find a system that gave me guidance on what to look for in colours that would help me look my best... Then I found your channel and watched this and if course I'm cool and radiant!
It should have been obvious to me when one time I was in the bath with my toddler and he was scrubbing my legs, when I asked him what he was doing he said "I'm getting the blue lines off your skin Mum" they were my veins which he could see through my extremely pale skin 😂
Yesterday I went to the op shop (thrift store) and bought a few knits and tops in cool and radiant colours to test it out and it absolutely works! I particularly found a magenta top which makes me look so nice and I'd never tried magenta because I thought it would be so wrong on a red head but I LOVE it. Thank you Merriam ❤️

It is honestly really hard for me to find make up that goes well with my fair skin and everything. I also have blue eyes, and to this day I’m still trying to figure out which looks look good on me and which ones don’t .so hello to all of my fellow natural redheads!

Great video. This really explains a lot because my husband is a redhead and I was scratching my head for the longest wondering why he didn't look so good in muted warm colors. He has super yellow skin but his eyes are a crystal grey. Super vibrant and his hair has this duo chrome effect where it's red but somehow seems to look like golden wheat from a certain angle. Should I try neon colors? Idk he looks pretty alive in that super bright construction orange if you know what mean

I'm just wondering... Who looks better with dyed red hair? Including all shades... - Honey brown-red or whisky red, burgundy red etc... - I feel like it's some cross between color analysis, Kibble and person's appearance, personal preferences.... And also the length plays some part somehow in how the color looks...
Eva Longoria - warm and radiant.. She has colored her hair some warm colors... Like honey with an amber glow...
Eva Mendes - looks good with her hair honey color, despite having strong face features. While Yasmeen Ghauri, I feel like, - not so much. - She looks better having black hair. And I feel like she is cool and muted. I'm thinking of one blogger.... - Deep burgundy, almost rose, like a flower, flaming red looks good on her, with her bright yellow-a little bit pinkish skin, while she looks soft classic...
For myself, - a TR close to a SD, warm and radiant - dark brown, or with a slight shade of burgundy/purple. Or better black. Only strong dark colors

You know, yeah, of course, I always mention people that I like and who I'm pretty familiar with, throughout their career, so maybe I mentioned someone really many times... to give famous examples... - Selena Quintanilla - was red-haired once. And with defined waves too - with honey red curly bob. J Lo, who played her, looks good with all colors and textures. As a brunette in her youth. In chocolate, in maybe black color. With all shades of natural blonde, in honey. She was red-haired as well. I heard that they call her "exotic" winter in some systems. Saying that both warm and cool colors match her. Basically, everything. It said that this colortype is highly uncommon among white people. But hmmm.. how many tan brunettes are there amongst white people in all countries, or middle easterns? It is hard and pretty unreasonable to judge such things by ethnicity

I’m a redhead and wearing the colour red confused me. For a red I look great in a brick red or rich blood red and not a more pinkish bright red. Burnt orange also looks lovely but so does pale blue, turquoise, aubergine and emerald green. I’m pretty sure I’m cool toned but the red question confuses me. I also prefer gold or copper jewellery as it picks out the flecks of gold in my hair.

In my country there is a lot of miscigenation, so most redheads I've known are not as pale as the ones you've analysed - then that "lack of pigment" which you think makes people cool & radiant is not as common here. I know redheads who look definitely warm, and others who are cooler. So... I think you're right - they can be warm, cool, muted or radiant!

Wow! Finally a video for us redheads. I've always been in quite a dilemma about my undertone, and this video helps me understand it a bit more. However, if someone has the time I could do with some help. I would say I look quite like the girl on the far right in the last picture, except my eyes are an amber hazel color, as well as darker eyebrows. My skin tends to look quite red and irritated if I wear blue and green eye-shadows, so I stick to warm colours. Purple suits me quite well too. When it comes to clothes I have consistently through my life worn oranges and reds, said to supposedly clash with my hair, but I feel the best in warm colours, as I feel cooler ones don't suit my style and make me look a bit red. My veins on the inside of my wrist are blue and purple, my eyelids are purple and pink, but the back of my hands show green. I think the parts of me where I have freckles (arms, face) tend to be warmer and the others, such as my legs, be a lot more cool. It's quite odd and that's why I feel I walk a thin line when i put on makeup because i might have two different undertones sort of fighting each other. Also, I've always preferred green over blue, since red hair is really quite orange, and green doesn't make me look red. Spot on with the yellow though, never bought a yellow garment in my life. Your colour analysis is very good and I love the comparisons and such.

Natural red hair, muted lemony yellow leaning olive undertones despite also being very pale - probably from my mixed HK Chinese & White British heritage. Because the cool yellowness is most obvious and easily mistaken for a warm yellow (it isn’t, finding a matching foundation was a headache) I generally look best in warm toned colours (warm green, warm dark teal, earth tones in general)

You know, your series caused me to, and I've been contemplating, somehow, about the type, vibe, and stereotypes about types, after your series:) Of course - that is very narrow! You type can't judge about person's personality, self-presentation(image) by the type, in any way! Though still, typing does say something about physiognomics and energy.... But really, even photo shoots that people do, pictures that they post say something about type manner, in a crazy way! Pretty connected with the type! Some bright soft naturals pose sunshines and happy:) Like Regina Tododenko, Masha Ivakova, for example. (I'm not Russian though, but still) Some Theatrical Romantics pose thoughtful and sensual. Like Kim, for example. Some Soft Dramatics, Flamboyant Naturals - pose a bit dramatic and royal, relaxed in a royal way. If some type with a Dramatic part to them take a lively "happy " picture - they often make it a sultry vibe, like under Cuban sun, for example:)) Flamboyant Gamines happen to take pics overly confident or indifferently-looking in them, in a good way, or sultry and sensual in this confident way:)) Some poetry with Clasics... Coquette Gamines(or just if people have a tendency to look close some type, vibe)... About the Dramatic Classics - the say it is like the Fifth Avenue vibe (style). I know that all sounds pretty weird, but.... But I guess, you'll agree with me, that it's still present. At least, in pop culture

But is if I have a rosy very pale skin tone? I am neutral because I have more red?

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 років тому +3

I would say that since red is neutral, that's not what we'd look at to determine cool/warm. If your rosy undertone is more of a cool pink, then you may be cool, but if it's more of a peach, then you may be warm (because a cool pink = red +a bit of blue, which is cool, and a peach = red+a bit of yellow, which is warm)!!
The way that you describe your skin in general makes me think that it's probably cool, either cool and delicate or cool and radiant, because 'rosy' is usually a bit of a cooler pink, and not so much a peach. Hope that helps!

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 років тому +3

Both cool and delicate and cool and radiant can do a cool red (pretty bright)....and both warm and delicate and warm and radiant can do a warm red (also can be bright), or a tomato red. Red is special because it's so close to neutral, so it doesn't have to be muted for it to look alright on the delicate undertones (since they are also close to neutral).
But if you're cool and delicate, you can also do cool burgundy (instead of red) or cool mauve, instead of red. And if you're warm and delicate, you can do terracotta or a warm brick red.
Cool and radiant, cool red, and warm and radiant, warm tomato red!! :)!!!

Hi, I have a question please about hair colour. I am a bright winter and I am looking to find out what hair colours would suit me as I am looking to dye my hair. I have quite pale skin that looked like Snow White and very cool toned all through my youth, and then in my late twenties I started to build more pigment over the years that stayed and my skin started to look more yellow. So I am now a neutral skin tone and definitely a bright winter. Any muted colours make me look very ill and washed out. Very strong and contrasting colours look best on me because of my dark olive green eyes next to my bright skin. My hair is brown under most light but in bright light it shows some auburn tones. I don't think my natural hair colour compliments my skin and eyes the best. It can look a little too dull sometimes. I "pop" a lot more with very dark brown / blackish hair. I have also had very light ash blonde hair and that very bright colour also looked good on me. I have also had red hair and it was okay too. I am interested in perhaps going for a light cool red / strawberry blonde next. But not sure if this will compliment me or if it will wash me out. Please could you make a video about all the hair colours that suit a light skin bright winter?

At least, that seems to be the way it works out among the people I know. Then they would usually have kids with warm skin tones, too.

I think I am cool (haven't figured out the specifics yet). I think my dad is cool & delicate, quite a bit darker than me but he tans easily and turns warm & delicate (his face is cool& delicate and his arms are at least nearly neutral), my mom is warm & delicate and pale. Straight up peach. My sister, who is a lot darker than me (she could pass as a local in italy or spain) is I think warm & delicate, maybe more neutral in winter and more towards radiant in summer. My brother, who has very pale skin with dark hair, is C&R I think.

Im a redhead and i think im more warm than cool. Im often yellow looking with lighter strawberry blonde and blue eyes. My veins are green and a few on wrist are purple not blue. Thats suppose to be a neutral tone. I can wear both gold and silver. I am probably what you called the warm delicate however when i do grey it really doesnt work it makes me grey so i dont agree with that part of video but it was excellent video!

What about dying your hair red according to your undertone and skin tone? Would love a video on that! My hair is dark ash brown but I feel so washed out with my natural color and prefer my hair in summer when the sun makes it a bit more golden. Have always been curious about dying my hair red but wonder if it's possible given that I'm pretty sure I'm a muted (delicate) winter.

I'm a redhead with blue eyes and gold flecks in them with warm freckles, warm when I tan, but cool when I don't. My mom is Sicilian and my dad a mix of things. (If that matters). So, I'm struggling to find my season.
