    Great video, Gary. I followed your procedure three times with a no luck. I decided to go one step further and replace the solenoid valve since I had purchased it with the new valve. Problem solved! I guessing the solenoid had sand inside which did not allow it to seal. Hope this helps another rookie!

    The diaphragm seal under the solenoid of this rainbird valve model will develop a small crack in the rubber.
    Happens a lot especially when the valve is in direct sunlight.

    • @garyssprinklerrepair
      @garyssprinklerrepair  2 місяці тому +1

      @@aceyorba correct, it is also prone to the plastic piece breaking off the solenoid and the result is a restriction of flow. With the inside piece typically falling down into the body of the valve and requiring it to flushed out prior to replacing the diaphragm.
      Thanks for your tip. 👍

    Wonderful video! Very helpful, thorough, and useful. You helped two senior citizens (female at that) replace and troubleshoot a valve and save the hassle of explaining the symptoms to an English-speaking-challenged gardener and have to pay for a full valve replacement that wasn't necessary. Just out of curiosity, though, the bleed screw from the old valve blew out and we couldn't thread it back. (...which is why we replaced the top parts of the valve.) It did not appear to be stripped, nor did the threads of where it went. However, it already had teflon plumber's tape on it, which makes us think it had come out before and someone put it back. Two questions: 1. Would a new part from the factory have teflon tape on it already? 2. If a bleeder screw shoots out, can it be put back? It doesn't matter now since we replaced the top parts of the valve as explained in your brilliant video, but we are curious. The new valve's instructions make it a point to emphasize only to turn a bleeder screw one turn, suggesting it shouldn't be turned more or it might come out and not go back. Thanks so much for your video and help.

    • @eiknarfzepol
      @eiknarfzepol 4 роки тому +1

      Hi there I hope I could answer your questions.
      1. It does not come with Teflon tape from factory.
      The reason why they put Teflon tape is at one point the plastic threads were not holding it in place.
      2. In my experience these are $25 plastic valves. Absolutely nothing wrong with plastic in fact I like them better than the metal one's.. especially for residential use.
      But that small knob in particular is very
      sensitive....
      Hope that helps..

      Sorry I never saw your comment, sometimes UA-cam screens my comments. As Francisco mentioned the valves don’t come with Teflon tape, they’re easy to cross thread if unscrewed to far. Swapping the valves top definitely fixed the issue.✌️ thx Francisco

    Great Video! Funny, I came to this same conclusion when my existing valves had been changed many times and there was no more room to cut the pvc manifold as it had every inch filled with slip/slip connectors. I had three brand new valves, so I did the same thing you did in the video. I also attempted to get a diaphragm rebuild kit first, but got the wrong ones. Nothing was bad with the valve bodies. I love this method! And the fact you are using a commercial grade valves....much better!
    Hey, I have three zones and two work ok, but the third has really low pressure and I cannot figure out why. Two of the three are at a 4 foot elevation above the valves in an upper yard. I have started removing heads to flush them to see if they are clogged, but so far the two of the heads flush clear and water runs slowly out of the body. My next test will be to put a pressure gauge on the hose bib right next to the sprinkler valves, but I suspect since 2 of 3 have pressure it wont be a inlet pressure issue. Why would 2 of 3 heads flow ok and the one not flow well? Thanks for your video, it is a great idea

    • @garyssprinklerrepair
      @garyssprinklerrepair  8 місяців тому

      Many things can cause the issue with low flow. If the other two zones have the same amount of sprinklers and operate great, then first thing I would look for is a cracked pipe. Turn all of the sprinkler heads off on the set with low flow, then turn it on and let it run for a few minutes. Next, walk around and look for a really wet area, there’s your crack. Let me know how it goes.

    • @TOM3684
      @TOM3684 8 місяців тому

      You were right! Yes it was a cracked pvc pipe. Repairing it was a challenge because the po had a head coming off the main supply and two 3-ways off that section. Any time splicing into a buried section is tight unless I use an expanding repair piece. Maybe a video for the future?

    Thank you so much for this video. We have rainbird valves too (I didn't even know the name of them prior to this) and this video just saved us a huge headache. My Wife's Uncle is a pro landscaper and has been helping us with fixing up our sprinkler system during the weekends. We recently split a couple of the zones which didn't have high enough pressure (too many sprinklers per zone). I guess that one of the very old valves we have is having trouble handling the increased pressure now and got stuck in an on state (couldn't get it to turn off from the control box). I shut off the water but I couldn't get access to the shut-off valve for just that set of sprinklers (I think it's pretty well buried) so I ended up shutting off the water to the house to get it to stop so we had no water at all. After watching this video I took it apart as you showed. I took a few small rocks out of it and made sure the part that moves on the inside of the screw-on cap was not getting stuck, then put it back together and then it finally shut itself off after it ran for a few seconds when I turned the water back on. I'm leaving the system shut off until the weekend when her Uncle will be back to continue working on this. We'll likely just end up replacing those parts on that one as I don't trust it at this point. Thanks again!

    i have an abnormal issue with my rainbird valve and hoping it's something easy instead of having to replace the entire valve
    i open the valve solenoid lever manually, no water
    i loosen the blowoff valve, water spits out until retightened
    i loosen the solenoid a lot (unscrewing it), water leaks until retightened
    pressure valve is almost fully loosened
    but sprinkler still doesn't turn on
    could there be a clog or just the valve itself is bad?

    been doing the same thing for the large brass valves and they sell the replacement valve without the body...for $75 each...LOL I always change out the solenoid and or diaphram while I'm doing this. No sense in using old parts in your new valve. Also, on these sprinkler systems it doesn't make any difference which way you reattach the wires for the valve, they work either way. I was getting ready to use your method to repair a valve for one zone (zone #3) that continually leaks from a sprinkler head when the system is off. To find out which valve was for which zone, I manually turned the solenoid on for each of the 3 valves. The problem is, zone #1 now won't turn off. I returned the solenoid back to the off position, but the sprinklers still run for that zone, so I had to turn off the water supply. I removed the solenoid and put it back on, but it still just runs
    Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Should I just replace that one as well?

    • @garyssprinklerrepair

      Thanks Bud, most likely the O-ring on the solenoid is either torn or stretched some. I would just swap the top on that one too. Be forewarned when turning the water back on sometimes if using a Irritrol (or Lawn Genie) they will pop their diaphragms out if the waters turned on too fast. Not the case with Rainbird. Double check that the manual bleed screw is also closed. Hope you take a minute to Subscribe. 👍

    • @garyssprinklerrepair
      @garyssprinklerrepair  3 роки тому

      If the valves leaking during its operation from the breaker lid, there are a few things it could be.
      1. A bad valve letting water flow while off but not enough to seal the plunger on the lid.
      2. Loose lid....obviously
      3. Too high water pressure forcing the lid away from its flat washer losing the seal.
      4. It’s (normal) for water to flow from this lid after shutting off, for a few minutes then eventually stopping.
      You can purchase lids with mew seals separately.
      I once experimented by putting 2- flat washer seals where the pressure was too high and it fixed the problem without the need for a pressure regulator.

      If the valve is fairly new you can simply remove it using a hacksaw or ratchet cutters. If you use a hacksaw be sure to slightly turn the water back on for a moment to remove the PVC shavings before reinstalling it. I have a video on “How to Replace a Sprinkler Valve” on my Channel. The screws are snug tight and everything seems positioned correctly, so no idea what is going wrong - any ideas? Thanks!

    What brand is the best longest lasting valves? I’ve had bad luck with Hunter and Irritrol. How are brass valves? Price doesn’t matter.

      MisterWin hi, I use Rainbird valves and warranty them. Use a valve blanket to cover them year round. You won’t be disappointed. Be sure to flush the PVC shavings from all pipes before installing new valves so as not to flush shavings into your new valves. Hope this answered your question. I accidentally unscrewed the little pressure release valve on the diaphram part and it won’t screw back in. Do i need a new diaphram valve? Thanks

      Most likely cross threaded it, if you’re talking about the manual bleed screw.
      You will need to replace the top of the valve.

    My box is full of water and I have two sprinklers that constantly leak water. They are higher than others so installing a check valve wouldn’t work. What do you think would cause this? My backyard is very soggy

      Most likely a bad valve not shutting off all the way.

    Gary,
    Your video and instruction are very helpful. I am trying to replace my Lawn Genie valve. Got new one from Lowes, outside looks exactly same as old one, but inside the diaphragm are difference. New one doesn't have spring as old one. Don't know if can replace it? Do you think if I can buy a diaphragm of Rain Bird to replace it, can't find Lawn genie's one. Thanks

      You could fine a replacement on Amazon, Rainbird wouldn’t carry that. Lawn genie parts are normally exchangeable with irritrol parts. Make sure you’re not exchanging the diaphragm on a valve with no flow control with a diaphragm on a valve with a flow control.
