Paul Wolf Absolutely. The beauty of wool in general has been lost to most. Just saw today that Sportsman’s Guide has some Czech wool greatcoats on sale at the moment for $30. They look pretty sharp too.
I have learned something from watching your videos,,,I'm proud of you,for actually going out and doing it, others just talk about it,thank you for sharing your experiences with me
Thank you, Jason! This stuff is all about the doing. Just like anything else, the only way to get better at it is to get out there and actually do the thing. Have a good one.
I have an old greatcoat that fits beautifully and it comes down to my ankles, warmest coat I've ever owned. I actually made and stitched on some hooks to keep the split in the back closed when I'm not wearing it and walking around, it's now my go to blanket when I travel in the winter. I love that coat to death and now it's dual purpose.
I gotta get one of those palaktas. I bet it would be great in the Kansas winter wind. The remark at 18:16 when you credit being able to be out to having the right gear is so true. There's no bad weather, just poor gear choices!
The 5Cs are the primary tools. Those are the keys to pretty much everything out in the woods. Everything else is comfort and convenience. Enjoy those palatkas!
Marion Robinson IV Thanks Marion! Very cool kit you have. Just picked up US shelter half and really dig it. It can be paired up with the plash palakta, btw. Cheers Jess
I have a NVA palatka at home. LOVE IT. Its been with me on many trips and abroad. Ive waxed mine with a special wax for heavy cloth. It is quite stiff now, a bit heavier (nit by much tho). Ive also out buttons on it, so its way easier to button it and much mire securely. I can also button it up as a sleeping bag or bivvi bag. Mine is 180x180, Im 186, but i can fit in just good enough. It seems to me waxing it helped with going through stuff, as it doesnt get caught on thorns as much. But that migh be just my feeling. Its heavy, but atom bomv proof. Ill never change it for anything.
Its hard to beat the wool-canvas combination! Having a great coat would be awesome..! The only problem is finding one in xxl at a minimum and xxxl would be better yet. Thanks for the video...
Michel Off-grid Thanks Michel! I am still amazed at how little interest there is in wool these days. I have been finding incredible pieces of wool clothing for very low prices, just sitting forgotten on a rack.

bought a bulgarian greatcoat a couple years ago for like 15$ shipped now they are like 50$, also got some killer finnish jackboots off varusteleka for 27$ before they ran out of stock in normal human sizes. even though i don't do a lot of outdoorsmanship type stuff they were great purchases
Nice to see someone else carrying vice grips. I like to have a pare of needle nose ones in my fish kit as a 3rd hand for fly tying. Also like to carry fencing pliers. Don't think I've ever seen a video of anyone carrying those.
Hi there Jess .. 👍👍👍. This post just popped up on my feed. Watched it again and enjoyed it even more than the first time. Yep .. back to basics .. never fails. Woollen Great / Top Coats are always a good buy. I got mine (a black 'Mafia-type New York' 100% Wool Top Coat) many years back, in South Africa at a Budget Store for the then Dollar-equivalent $7.00 (I think?). Before the Government stopped it as it was affecting sales of locally-produced clothing / the associated Gravy Train 😏, retailers could import 'bundles' of used clothing and sell them off cheaply. The coat is in very good condition and each Autumn, comes out of the cellar and back onto the front door entrance coat rack. Woollen Beanie, Scarf, Gloves and one is good to go 😊. For me, a nice 'blast from the past' and a reminder that Age often Ages and Wears well. Am looking forward to the cooler months. Take care .. Tommy
Thanks Tommy! This was a fun one for me too. Simpler times as well. I had access to a really good surplus store back then. He had so much good stuff on the racks and shelves, and his prices were pretty nice. No website sadly. I think he could really boost his business if he did though. Thanks again my friend. Have a good one 🤝
I learned long ago that extra batteries should be kept in pockets under the first outside layer of clothing in Winter conditions. Cold drains batteries, even the newer alkaline and lithium ones.
When I first packed a bundle bag to go out in the woods seriously go I put 6 c in that bundle without even knowing it .it was what I needed . Lol 1975 I started seriously doing this
Ive gone to a 13 C's kit. The extra 3 with some examples are communication(walkie talkie, ham, phone) calories(snacks, protein bars, mre) and care(bandaids, tourniquet, antiseptic).
John Does I am a fan of goose down, but I won’t be giving up the wool or the plash palatka anytime soon. :) With wool alone, I agree, it doesn’t cut the wind. But it is a tremendous insulation. Adding the palatka on top of the wool is quite an upgrade. The PP keeps the cold air out and your body heat in next to the wool. I can definitely see how soldiers with just a wool coat would have been in trouble though.
@@EnduranceRoom I did a winter camp out on Mount Rainier in the Cascade Range in 82 and I slept in three inches of water with an old Rambo bag it was perfectly dry on the inside and soaking wet on the outside I would have been dead you have been for the bag I was using goose down so I don't trust the synthetics you can't do that with synthetic
@@EnduranceRoom and I repeated The Experience last winter a bad rain storm in a light goose down jacket and sleeping bag I'm just curious about the six moons Poncho cape
I reckon the PP would compliment the gorka 3 very nicely with some merino thermals under heath. Have only just found your channel, and loving it so far! :) Here in New Zealand, we can get all the weather in 1 day in many of my favourite hunting places. Making it quite a challenge get to pack and dress right
Vinnie Jackson Right on! The gorka and the PP definitely work quite well together. New Zealand sounds like an awesome place to hunt! cheers and welcome to the channel! Jess
Went by my local surplus the other day . Better stocked than last time but not the poncho or molle bags I was looking for. I’ll have to remember to look for the wool. Our cool weather is only is only two weeks long 😬
John Burgin its nice to have. Cold season is only 2 weeks!? I do enjoy some winter here, not to mention 4 seasons. The changes in the landscape keep things interesting
hint: if you use your tent stakes by pulling the prussik through the grommets, it will take a lot of strain from them, rather important with a grabber space blanket. I lost a few grommets on my first blanket, none on my new one, thanks to this little trick. (none sofar! knock on wood.)
Thank you. I am not sure, never met him. He doesn’t really take credit for coming up with the list so much, but rather using the Cs as a way to remember/categorize the basics. There are definitely other ways to go about it. I like to think in terms of fire, water, food, shelter/clothing/sleep kit, tools, navigation/communication and first aid.
Maybe I should give greatcoats another try. i got a surplus felt greatcoat with a very fine inner liner, nice brass buttons etc many years ago for a good deal but I honestly was rather disappointed with it in cold weather, my bundeswehr parka (with warm inner liner) was better in both even colder weather and warmer weather. It even held up ok majority of the time in winter Lappland above the Arctic circle.
"going through the truckers hitch twice" You should also look into the improved truckers hitch. Also, stop the stretch by getting the right line. Dacron/polyester. Check out westmarine.com for that. They have something called dac cord, same size as 550 but braided and superior material. Like 8 bucks for a 50 ft. hank I think. Worth every penny.
Cool, man. Thanks for the tip. I stopped going through the hitch twice a while back. It was eating my line up. Haven’t heard of the DAC cordage before. Sounds cool.
@@EnduranceRoom The improved truckers hitch will help combat chafing. It gives the loop two strands instead of one. I use a double farmers loop or double alpine butterfly loop. It takes a little longer to tie, but not much and should add years to the life of your line.
Old video, but I'm interested. What's the coldest temperature you have been using wool blanket(s) instead of a sleeping bag? I'm really keen to test two wool blankets in winter. With a fire.
@@sarthalion About 10F with 2 medium wool blankets and a plash palatka over top to hold heat in. Slept in side 3 palatkas as a triangular tepee that night. With a fire it’s okay, you can go cold camping, but you need to keep it going if you are depending on it for heat. If it goes out while you are sleeping, you can be at risk for hyperthermia.
As you were talking about it, I was thinking about making one with fabrics I could buy online. It'd be almost impossible, as far as I know you can't buy fabric like that anymore, who would make it?

Instead of explaining the pockets for the camera, batteries etc. they should focus on a pocket for first aid. just my 2 cents ...ty
Thank you. Honestly, as far as first aid goes, typically all I have is 1” gorilla tape and cotton cloth. For longer or more remote trips, I have an old ALICE mag pouch turned into a first aid kit.

Love greatcoats. They are one of the best garments ever created. It's a shame, most people don't realize how good they are.
