That’s actually a pretty accurate assessment. I own an Estrema and have tested the Quad several times. I live in a snowy climate so decided I needed the AWD. There is very little if anything between the two in terms of handling, steering and dynamics. Alfa designed the Giulia around the V6 Quad not the other way around like Audi and BMW. correction Mr CHRISS.... the Germans have not caught up...the GIULIA still owns the NURBURGRING record and it will never ever be broken because there will never be another GIULIA QV
The facelifted Giulia Q has gotten a ZF differential instead of the electrical one, a different setup for the suspension and the steering is a little less direct which makes it less nervous to drive on a straight autobahn. Alfa made this car to have seriously good fun. So it might not be the quickest on the track... it is the car that you step in to with a smile, and when you get home for dinner, you turn your head one more time to look at it after your Sunday drive...

Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio is an all-time classic. We want fun not just tenths off a stopwatch. Good review from Jason, but there's only one winner for me and it's the Italian. And by a long margin.
Unlike most people I'm not going to pretend I can afford either of these cars, or that if I could, I would be driving them like Jason is here... No. These are both "dream cars". That being said considering this Alfa is now 7 years old and, remarkably, almost the same price it was back in 2016, thats pretty damn good! On the road, that makes a big difference to comfort and usability, which is what really matters, not lap times.
Great effort from Audi. Just to note that the RS5 weighs 175kg more. Still that A5 begs to be silver and that front headlights can't stop any potential owner from knowing how many different variants there were and that they will be obsolete in no more than 1 year. It's just a much more commercial product which can battle with this Alfa only 6 years later. The Alfa with the stelvio Q4 would have indeed been faster thanks to better power to weight ratio, but alfa couldn't be bothered making a 4wd version of the Giulia, it looks exacly as it looked in 2016 because it can. It's a classic already and it has to be RWD. The RS5 will hold value on the market fairly well, but only become obsolete, never a classic.
Before the fast lap decides, I’m predicting a lap in favor of the AR. Having owned both & a current RS5 owner, there is nothing beyond experiencing a QV as your daily. You are truly a part of the car & vice-versa… fbow. 🤷♂️
I have the Giulia Estrema trim, basically a Veloce with the carbon fibre interior/exterior trim of the QV in Alfa Rosso. I absolutely love it, and the best part is Alfa designed the entire Giulia range around the QV, so whereas the M3 and RS5 are very different cars from their lesser mid range and entry spec versions, the base engine Giulia (in North America) with the LSD is essentially the same car as the QV to a T without the V6. It handles, steers and engages just like a QV minus the incredible wave of power and sound. That said the 2.0T is no slouch and with a piggy back ECU you’ll have a sub 5 second car all day.
@@orwaw1001 I’ve driven both vehicles and i understand what you’re trying to say but the RS5 bluntest tool in Audi’s tool box? Have you driven a b9 RS5? Its very neutral in cornering and has a rwd bias differential/awd system. It doesn’t even feel like 4 thousand pounds when your pushing it hard. I can't understand he thinks the suspension on the Giulia Q is quite soft. My Stelvio Q in Race-mode is just bonkers hard. It's almost to much. Is the Stelvio in Race-mode stiffer then the Giulia Q? Makes me wonder, because in Race-mode I feel like driving a lowered '98 Honda Civic. It's just that stiff and hard. I love it though, because in Race-mode it should be that hard for the track. Besides: the Alfa almost 2 seconds slower? That's wel.... quite suprising.
I'm sure Jason knew the engine displacement numbers but if you pay attention he called the Alfa a 3L ( 2:27) and then switched to saying both are 2.9L 6's when focusing on the Audi S5.
We generally only express one decimal place when referring to engine capacities. You can be sure that neither of them are 2900cc or 3000cc, somewhere in that ball park. Could you imagine if the called a golf gti a 1.984 litre? Call a 5 litre Jag a 4.992 litre? Snappy sounding names and concise badging takes priority of accurately measured swept volumes.
You're right about the nose diving, which also remains when installing the shorter ST springs. But there is a solution : installing the GTAm software for the dampers, which is offered by Squadra tuning in the Netherlands. Night and day difference !!
@@larrychew1 A friend of my dad had 1, and we swap it with the rs4 for a month. The stelvio was incredible, closest thing to an estate u can get, and the engine is much more dramatic than the Rs4. The only issue is that we didn't need the height, which you can feel when going very fast. And the interior looks very old when comparing it. Amazing car tho, and best SUV you can buy for sure.
Soooo many butrhurt broke teenager Alfie fanatics in these comments. I've had two GQ's and LOVE them both, just traded in my former for the 23' RS5 (no comp) and they're just not close to close. Driving skill matters and this guy flat out admits he's scared of The QV.. cannot make a comparison with an rs5 designed for a low skilled driver verses The QV that demands driving skill.
@@THjorth I can care less. dude is around 70 and admits he is scared to drive the alfa. Just because someone once was a great driver does not preclude age eroding their reaction time and driving skill level - this is why pro athletes obviously retire.
Bullshit. How fast Audi went on the Nurburgring? 7' 59". Do you know how fast the Giulia Quadrifoglio was ? 7' 32" . So, can anyone explain why Plato was fastre on the RS5 by 1,5 sec ?!?
You can’t beat German ! Sorry folks…. And Audi has had the A5/S5/RS5 models for a lot longer than you think - truly tested as one of the most anmzing cars. Audi any day of the week ! Audi are very specific when engineering these cars so it’s a personality thing. Although I have not driven the Alfa before, I’m a little curious.
Audi comes in 2 seconds faster because this guy by his own admission, is a low-skilled driver who is "afraid" to fade the Romeo's rear end. Track driving takes skill, an every day driver just doesn't have that so this is a bs comparison. The Romeo because it's rwd, and with a skilled driver, would smoke The Audi on this track.
Going to be an interesting watch, as an owner of the Alfa I will surprised if the Audi can hold a candle to the dynamics and enjoyment of the Alfa tho.......the Alfa is such a pleasant daily as well, which surprised me.
Wrong Audi. They should have used the A7 or RS7. Because the Audi is a coupe, the Alfa should be a coupe. If the Alfa is a sedan, the Audi should be a sedan. Thanks.
The Giulia is a drivers car, the steering is fantastic, rwd gives better experience and its a nicer car on the eye. RS5 is quick but has no soul. Ive owned a Giulia for 12 months now, trouble free, reliable and put a smile on my face whenever im at the wheel.
anyone can drive the audi a giulia quadrifoglio no! it is clearly evident that the rider in this video is unable to keep the giulia on the trajectory, wasting precious seconds. The comparisons must be made with expert drivers, especially experts in rear-wheel drive because the gas pedal output must be dosed delicately to lower the lap time. In fact, at the Nurburgring the Alfa gives the RS5 at least 15 seconds
Yes agreed think it’s great value I’ve got mine booked in for next week including exhaust flap opening in D & start/stop delete. Have you noticed a big difference in performance with the extra 100 bhp ? I’m also running PS4S’s which should also improve the traction over the original Corsa’s .
I would. Difficult comparing a 4WD system on a track against a RWD car. The 4WD car is almost always likely to be quicker given its advantages in the corners in maintaining grip and a bit extra speed. Would still have the Alfa over the Audi any day. I have a Giulia Veloce currently and it was that or an Audi S4 and the Alfa was miles better to drive. The Audi was pretty safe and boring even in race mode.
@@sx200n1 yeah, maybe if we're talking BMW awd systems, perhaps.. but Audi was ways known for understeering, so this was a total surprise for me. I would also have the Alfa, no doubt, but this video made me respect Audi more.
I agree. The driver can make all the difference in the world. Alfa set the record at Nurburgring, the most grueling race track on the planet which makes this one look like a walk in the park by comparison.
Awesome video Jason, I have the RS5 and absolutely love it but I've been eyeing that Alfa for a while; this makes my decision ever harder on what to do once my lease is up. I love everything about that Alfa except the RWD, really wish they would make the Quadrifoglio in AWD but I know that will never happen. If I make the switch I have to live with the fact that I'm moving to a slower car. I've actually pulled a 0-60 time in my RS5 at 3.2 and that's stock! For the Alfa to pull of a 3.9 you'll need some really good soft grippy tires, so hard to get grip off the line with that car. Thanks for the vid!
Who cares about 0-60 times? If u want 0-60 buy an Audi etron. I love the fact that it’s rwd, it makes the car lighter and opens up the steering. + rwd cars will always drive more lively
@@nikomoin7604 0-60 not so much but doing a nice quarter mile run is fun. Don't get me wrong I love the Alfa and I'm still strongly considering it. Another reason I wish it had AWD is my location has some pretty tough winters so RWD is not ideal as a daily driver.
You don't drive numbers on a piece of paper you drive the car. Go drive a QV and you will not be thinking you are "moving to a slower car". It feels noticeably quicker than an RS5. More power and less weight. In reality how often do you launch your RS5? Probably not much. in gear acceleration matters more. Then you get to the steering and chassis dynamics where the QV absolutely destroys the RS5. No comparison, the QV is for driving enthusiasts.
I have owned both. I currently own my second QV. there is no comparison between these two. RS5 is very stiff. under steers, front heavy and QV is clearly faster and of course QV is the prettiest sedan ever. Let's not forget you did the testing in cold soggy weather with Pirelli Asymmetrico tires which has no grip below 45 degrees and you gave the RS5 the all weather tires. Makes no sense. So QV did a 7:32 on nring and RS5 could do a measly 7:59 so let's not forget that.
Great spot guys !!! Aside Audi is newer and made with Quadrifoglio in mind, we have a coupé with less holes in the chassis and supposely a greater torsional strength. As you mentioned Alfa has suspension that works on the road and are not stiff as traditional are sport version of german cars (remember when Ferrari introduced the incredible fast 458 and most sensible drivers noted how its set-up was incredible confortable) like this RS. Un-bilieveble you compared a 500 HP rear wheel drive car to one 4 wheel drive on a slightly wet track. That's unfair. Why cause Alfa is a four doors you not tried with four person on board against the two doors Audi with just two person on board?? By the way Quadrifoglio is the fastest Giulia, but the best value for money is Q4 with 280 HP just half power at almost half price still road usable sport settings and with the same feeling to be in control of all Giulia... English people knows well it because they have plenty roads narrow and not perfectly paved with lot of turns that made British cars so nimble in the past, as italian use to do too. In France roads follow the hills and Germany is flat with highway always in mind with more recent streets without bumps, so the characteristic of their cars. This is why the only truly german car and oldest is Mercedes with their fast cruisers even in AMG version. Do not forget the other factory from Stuttgart they made the perfect 911, need 60 years to reach nowadays perfection but they reach it. Meanwhile Ferrari made about a hundred of the most beautyful car ever and I still don't understand why are not all painted red 😡
4WD against 2RWD it's not a true 1:1 comparision... Anyway, I'll take the Q, it's more beautiful, style is a matter of personality. Audi makes technically almost perfect driving machines... machines against pieces of art, that the difference for me. Both are very fast and nice cars.
5th gear presenter proved a few years ago that Giulia QV was quicker on track than merc c63s V8 and now suddenly another ex-pilot pushes on straight line a car that has 60 hp more than the audi to much lower speeds and corrects the trajectory constantly on the exits. I mean come on, you can almost see the "commercial" for Audi quattro in the background if you strive well enough. This is embarassing really (for the show).

It's a classic already and it has to be RWD. The RS5 will hold value on the market fairly well, but only become obsolete, never a classic.
What a great accurate comment mate, exactly my thoughts!!
there is a giulia q4 but has 280 hp, out of a 2.0L turbocharged 4 ,16valves, with 306 lb-ft or 400 Nm of torque
When the Alfa came out in 2018 with the quad, I felt like I was in Jr High and losing control and put a book on my lap... 😂😂. Beautiful Vehicle
The Alfa was launched in late 2015.
Before the fast lap decides, I’m predicting a lap in favor of the AR. Having owned both & a current RS5 owner, there is nothing beyond experiencing a QV as your daily. You are truly a part of the car & vice-versa… fbow. 🤷♂️
The four leaf clover also represented the four members of the original racing team including enzo Ferrari
Wonder what tyres were on each car. Or if the track was bone dry. I didn't expect that result
I think it was slightly slippery and the Audi probably had better tires too
@@Top_Gear_Clips_Centralbut Audi has 60 hp less and is heavier

Audi RS5 - bluntest tool in Audi's tool box....quickish though

@@orwaw1001 I’ve driven both vehicles and i understand what you’re trying to say but the RS5 bluntest tool in Audi’s tool box? Have you driven a b9 RS5? Its very neutral in cornering and has a rwd bias differential/awd system. It doesn’t even feel like 4 thousand pounds when your pushing it hard. Everyone tries to discredit Audi’s performance but the Alfa lost on the track with 60 extra horsepower. Audi is better. Simple
@@stefanomarcellino6701 what are u smoking ? giulia has 7:32 on nurburgring and beats every audi on track. he just cant drive the giulia on full potential in the video
Its a 2.9 litre in the alfa not 3.0 😅
He took poetic license to round up the number. The correct number was in the dry on-screen specs.
I'd say because of the extra weight/height the Stelvio is sprung way more stiffly than the Giulia to compensate and reduce body roll
It’s almost like the Giulia and the Stelvio aren’t the same car at all!
Why is it hard to understand the suspension could be different between the two
To be fair I thought same. But track is so different to road.
On track it isn't "that hard", but I prefer a slightly softer car anyway, I use that softness to feel the edge more.
Not a sedan fan but the Alfa looks GREAT. I’d still take the Audi, but I think it’s overpriced. I admire both, but they’re not entirely my cup of tea.
Alfa is a 2.9 ltr V6. Not a 3 ltr
You're right about the nose diving, which also remains when installing the shorter ST springs. But there is a solution : installing the GTAm software for the dampers, which is offered by Squadra tuning in the Netherlands. Night and day difference !!
We love the Giulia so much, but we needed an estate for our family so we got a rs4 with the abt kit, so we have 510hp as well. I miss the RWD tho
Did you consider the Stelvio QV?
@@larrychew1 A friend of my dad had 1, and we swap it with the rs4 for a month.
The stelvio was incredible, closest thing to an estate u can get, and the engine is much more dramatic than the Rs4.
The only issue is that we didn't need the height, which you can feel when going very fast. And the interior looks very old when comparing it.
Amazing car tho, and best SUV you can buy for sure.
We had a much lower spec Giulia diesel as a courtesy car recently. Loved it apart from the navigation system oh and the price.
Soooo many butrhurt broke teenager Alfie fanatics in these comments. I've had two GQ's and LOVE them both, just traded in my former for the 23' RS5 (no comp) and they're just not close to close.
Both look great but I prefer the Audi. Audi definitely quicker, far better handling.
QV has two advantages and two only, sound and acceleration at 80+
Jason, love your Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 watch!
How fast does it get to 60 seconds?
The Alfa for the looks alone.
Got the Alfa last car was the rs5 Alfa best too drive rs5 bit more quality both great cars both very quick but can’t put power down inda Alfa until your in 3 gear love them both
Driving normally every day, you can have fun with Alfa on 50km/h, don't have to push it 150km/h.. even much cheaper 2.0T!
Track looked damp in the Alfa lap. Surprised that the RS5 was quicker but if the track was damp for both laps then Audi would have an advantage.
Driving skill matters and this guy flat out admits he's scared of The QV.. cannot make a comparison with an rs5 designed for a low skilled driver verses The QV that demands driving skill.

Bullshit. How fast Audi went on the Nurburgring? 7' 59". Do you know how fast the Giulia Quadrifoglio was ? 7' 32" . So, can anyone explain why Plato was fastre on the RS5 by 1,5 sec ?!?
I can explain. Brought to you by VW.
Because he’s not a pro and doesn’t have the confidence in RWD and needs all the nannies.
Also that RS5 will only transport 4 adults as the back seats 2 only. This is an awful review.

You can’t beat German ! Sorry folks…. And Audi has had the A5/S5/RS5 models for a lot longer than you think - truly tested as one of the most anmzing cars. Audi any day of the week ! Audi are very specific when engineering these cars so it’s a personality thing. Although I have not driven the Alfa before, I’m a little curious.
man, are you serious? "Audi Personality"?!
The QV worked. They won their race. Then forgot it, driver got killed, so The white Square became a triangle. As a reviewer, you should know this
How can you compare a 4 wheel drive to a rear one?
How can't you? They're both cars
What mode did he drive the Alfa? Does the 4door Audi have a longer wheelbase than the 2door?
Another paid by Audi advert….
Nope. Depending on the conditions the RS5 crushes the Giulia.
Ever since I bought the audi 2007 a4 I fell in love with audi handling. It's great
Quadrafoglio all day....in Kayalami green (which is an Audi paint colour) 👌💯🍀

The new Honda Civic Type-R vs Toyota GR Yaris shootout please! (I have the GR-Y, just wondering if it is worth changing it with the new CTR.) Cheers!
Audi is probably better vehicle but Alfa is certainly better car.
Going to be an interesting watch, as an owner of the Alfa I will surprised if the Audi can hold a candle to the dynamics and enjoyment of the Alfa tho.......the Alfa is such a pleasant daily as well, which surprised me.
What??? Car and vehicle are two different meanings now?

Audi - slightly better straight-line performance, better fuel economy, better tech, safer for average driver (quattro), better practicality, quieter cabin.
Alfa - better looks, better driving dynamics

Wrong Audi. They should have used the A7 or RS7. Because the Audi is a coupe, the Alfa should be a coupe. If the Alfa is a sedan, the Audi should be a sedan. Thanks.
5 people in comfort in a 3 door coupe ??😀
The new M2 v the Giulia QF please?
❤Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio ❤❤❤ my 4 door Ferrari
The Giulia is a drivers car, the steering is fantastic, rwd gives better experience and its a nicer car on the eye. RS5 is quick but has no soul.
Ive owned a Giulia for 12 months now, trouble free, reliable and put a smile on my face whenever im at the wheel.
i like both car but Audi is better in many aspects.
Perfect comparison
anyone can drive the audi a giulia quadrifoglio no! it is clearly evident that the rider in this video is unable to keep the giulia on the trajectory, wasting precious seconds. The comparisons must be made with expert drivers, especially experts in rear-wheel drive because the gas pedal output must be dosed delicately to lower the lap time. In fact, at the Nurburgring the Alfa gives the RS5 at least 15 seconds
Fantastic video, with a surprising result! Also, Jason channeling Alain de Cadenet with that flat cap. (RIP Alain)
How much vignetting do you actually need…????
I'll take the Audi in Avant form. For four-door form, the Alfa all the way.
I didn't understand the meaning of soft diff in the Alfa. Can somebody explain?
Not locking up fully so instead of transferring torque fully to outside inside still spins a bit.

Alfa for me all the way. But I'm biased as a long-term Alfa owner.
Id give the Audi to my wife . Who cars about laptimes , its driving fun that counts. Give me the Alfa any day.
I would have never guessed the final result!

Alfa all day long.
Audi awd? 4x4 vs 4x2 ?
Audi= understeer paralympics car
Stelvio QF?
0-60 is so meaningless. It’s the feeling Alfas provide that makes all the difference.
Prise my Quad out of cold dead hands, love it.........ex BMW man :)
Nice, very nice video!
👍👍👍
I have owned both. I currently own my second QV. there is no comparison between these two. RS5 is very stiff. under steers, front heavy and QV is clearly faster and of course QV is the prettiest sedan ever. Let's not forget you did the testing in cold soggy weather with Pirelli Asymmetrico tires which has no grip below 45 degrees and you gave the RS5 the all weather tires. Makes no sense. So QV did a 7:32 on nring and RS5 could do a measly 7:59 so let's not forget that.
I love my audis but the alfla seens like a very unique car.
alfa is cooler. also a two door audi is not a practical car for a family of 5. and audi is 7 year newer engineering
But Audi is 100 kg heavier and has 60 hp less…
@@giovannicioffi2572 yeah give me a Giulia four wheel drive Diesel with winter tyres against this Audi on snow and we will see...

It’s really not hard lol- the Alfa. No contest.
Plato, your laugh has always been well, a laugh 🍻
I have a stelvio QV and have owned many cars nothing drives like my alfa NOTHING.
4WD against 2RWD it's not a true 1:1 comparision... Anyway, I'll take the Q, it's more beautiful, style is a matter of personality. Audi makes technically almost perfect driving machines... machines against pieces of art, that the difference for me. Both are very fast and nice cars.
Alfa all day. Love my QV ☘️. Audi’s are dull.
Top notch assessment as always
What does “…that diff is soft…” mean?
You can’t leave it there.

Der Alfa macht vor allem in der vmax mehr spass!
Lots of people like myself prefer the hatch back and AWD
So unless the alpha is AWD its not in a lot of peoples list.
I like the RS5 it´s a amazing car but, and a big but, Quadrifoglio all day!!
