The book I’m thinking of went into a box when I moved a few months ago, so I can’t access it yet. It was hand-drawn and possibly comb-bound, and advanced from simple geometrics to complex geometrics to animal interlaces. It was 8 1/2 by 11 and it was drawn on a boat in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the 1980s. When I find it, I’ll post the Title & Author here. Thank you for the tour. 🌱🌿💚
@@loudavisdrawing I will find it, every day is one day closer to that. 😎 Another thing I remember is that she had you fold paper in certain symmetries. For instance: fold in half, then in thirds, as if you were going to cut out a paper snowflake. •Then draw a short pair of parallel pencil lines up to the fold line. That will be the width of your interlaces. The angle to the fold will determine many things. •At least one pair of pencil lines come to each fold line. Then draw the lines to connect the fold laces to each other. I think each lace has to cross another lace. These will be shaded over and under in the final drawing. •Then carefully cut out between the laces, starting at the folds. When you unfold it you have a rough sketch of a pattern that you use to draw your final pattern from (unless you are a scherenschnitte artist and it’s already perfect 😉). •There was a set of mathematical rules to follow that I don’t remember completely (like how many times a lace had to cross another lace to prevent a mathematical mishap, etc. •Is this a method you have seen, and does it have a name? •I remember using it to design cuff bracelets in ultrasuede.

what an amazing video, i have a task ahead of me where i need to draw celtic knots as decorations and i was dreading the task due to the complexity of it all, but this video seems like a really good explanation on how to draw them. my artwork will have curves edges, hopefully I can find a way to curve the reference lattice.
Hi Lou! Just starting to experiment with Celtic Knots, your videos are the clearest I have found, thanks! I am wondering if there is a general principle of using a certain number (odd or even, does it matter?) of points in each direction, so that you end up with the right number of overlaps, corners, etc., or is there no "rule" and you can do any number in either direction (e.g. 4 x 4, or 4 x 5, or 4 x 6, or 5 x 5, 5 x 6, 5 x 7 and so on ?) I hope you understand my question! I can do a lot of experimenting to find out but if there is any rule one needs to follow, that's what I would like to know! Thanks so much!
Hi! I think some experimenting is a good idea but I think that you can do any number in any direction as long as what you’re counting (4x5 etc.) is the primary grid (and not the points in the middles of the boxes). I think there is a rule for how many ‘strands’ your knot contains based on how many you start with.
Do you have a formula for how many in the grid to avoid having orphaned strands that don't loop back around but get left just hanging at the edge? Or is that why you start with every other square in the grid?
Making Celtic knots has been the biggest mystery for me. Thank you helping me to understand how to start. ❤😮

@@loudavisdrawing I found it, It is an early version of “Design Your Own Paper Cut Celtic Knots, Molly’s Magic Method ©️ by Molly Swan-Sheeran and it is copyright 1999, later than I thought. There is a later version, which is also out of print, but you could try searching Thrift Books, Good Reads, Barnes & Noble, etc. under her name. Good luck.

Yes, you can bend the reference grid round a corner - like you do when drawing a celtic knot circle. I hope you have fun!
