Celtic Knot Mandala | Drawing Process

This week I've been drawing a celtic knot ring with a decorative mandala centre. This pattern builds on tutorials I've made recently on how to design and draw celtic knot patterns. I don't go into detail in this video on how I made the celtic knot, so if you'd like to draw along with me, check out my previous videos for the step-by-step technique: How to draw Celtic knots in a circle: ua-cam.co...
How to Draw a Celtic Knot Circle

I've recently got into drawing Celtic Knots and in today’s video share the method I’ve been using for drawing circular borders. I have been using a method I've used for years, adapted from a book I had over twenty years ago. If you know which book it might be, please do let me know because I've forgotten! This is based on that method, with a little playing around by me to work out what I like b...

I love it ! Thank you to share your work
This is beautiful. What kind of compass is this?
Thanks! The compasses are from a vintage set of drafting tools.
Extraordinaire et magnifique ❤
Merci Beaucoup!
Thank you so much for.making it so easy to understand. Wish me luck. 2025 is my celtic knotwork journey. Xxxx
Good luck!! Enjoy your journey!
C'est juste MAGNIFIQUE ❤❤❤

thank you!
These videos are a delight to watch. Can't to try this one!
Glad you like them!
wonderful, i wanted to do this on wood and crave it out, then do limestone, thank you so much.
Wonderful!
Hi Lou, a great video, thanks for sharing. I'm confined to the hospital at the moment, and looking for something to pass the time, and your artwork looks like something I can lose many hours in. Could you please recommend a drawing pad etc 😊. Thanks
Hi, I hope you find some respite in drawing! I really like a spiral bound square sketchbook and while I've not found the perfect one, these ones from Jackson's Arts are pretty good. www.jacksonsart.com/jackson-s-wire-o-sketchbook-130gsm It really is a matter of trying and finding out what you like though - most paper much works for these!
Planning to do one
Mam your mandalas are so so beautiful
This reminds me of something Mayan, like you'd see on the walls of Mexican pyramids
Soooo happy ive found this channel, its been 10+years since i did any knotwork, youve been a huge help
So well explained! Thanks so much. Now I’ve found a new obsession 😂
I enjoyed constructing this, thank you Lou.
You're welcome!
Thanks, great tutorial! It's easy to understand, so my first try went quite well. I didn't really see the point of the first circle, though. That just seems to add a few more steps. So, for my second try I dropped this. Instead, to construct the equidistant three points, I drew a horizontal line, chose my first point on the left side of that line, chose the radius and did my first circle (or part of the circle). The second point is where the circle crosses the horizontal line on the right side. Then I did the circle around the second point, and the third point is where the two circles cross. I find this much simpler, and there are fewer potentially confusing lines to deal with. If you'd want it to be exactly in the middle of the ark, you'd have to do a bit of measuring. I just eyeballed it because I am still practising anyway.
Glad you found it helpful, there are always different ways to do it, and the way you've used is, I think, a method I've used in a previous video. I've been making six-fold versions of this shape too and so find the circle helps me with that though you're right, it's not totally necessary!
The book I’m thinking of went into a box when I moved a few months ago, so I can’t access it yet. It was hand-drawn and possibly comb-bound, and advanced from simple geometrics to complex geometrics to animal interlaces. It was 8 1/2 by 11 and it was drawn on a boat in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the 1980s. When I find it, I’ll post the Title & Author here. Thank you for the tour. 🌱🌿💚
Thanks, do let me know if you remember it!
@@loudavisdrawing I will find it, every day is one day closer to that. 😎 Another thing I remember is that she had you fold paper in certain symmetries. For instance: fold in half, then in thirds, as if you were going to cut out a paper snowflake. •Then draw a short pair of parallel pencil lines up to the fold line. That will be the width of your interlaces. The angle to the fold will determine many things. •At least one pair of pencil lines come to each fold line. Then draw the lines to connect the fold laces to each other. I think each lace has to cross another lace. These will be shaded over and under in the final drawing. •Then carefully cut out between the laces, starting at the folds. When you unfold it you have a rough sketch of a pattern that you use to draw your final pattern from (unless you are a scherenschnitte artist and it’s already perfect 😉). •There was a set of mathematical rules to follow that I don’t remember completely (like how many times a lace had to cross another lace to prevent a mathematical mishap, etc. •Is this a method you have seen, and does it have a name? •I remember using it to design cuff bracelets in ultrasuede.
@@loudavisdrawing I found it, It is an early version of “Design Your Own Paper Cut Celtic Knots, Molly’s Magic Method ©️ by Molly Swan-Sheeran and it is copyright 1999, later than I thought. There is a later version, which is also out of print, but you could try searching Thrift Books, Good Reads, Barnes & Noble, etc. under her name. Good luck.
O.M.G.! You make it look so easy! I've been at it for almost 4 hours and.. still struggling 🙈 OK, I'm a real beginner.. at 80! Only discovered your channel yesterday. Love it!
Glad you're loving the channel - I hope you persevere - sometimes it takes time to get it, but when you do, you'll be away!
Beautiful❣️
Thank you! 😊
Hi. Do you have a tutorial for how to set this up please?
Hi, yes you can find it here ua-cam.com/video/EK1D0wTAM_Q/v-deo.html
Me fascinan los diseños celtas con sus trisquetas, y tejidos geométricos, me intriga quien o quienes inventaron originalmente este arte geometrico increíblemente armonioso y equilibrado expresión particular del pueblo celta. Gracias 😊
Amazing Talent 👏👏👏
Thank you so much 😀
Well done - that's really helpful of you to work out how to draw that pattern and show us in such a clear way. We've started to work round the circle and are on to the third inner row now We're finding it's best not to think about it too much and go with the flow but every now and then we have to have a break when our brains start to object! Thanks so much for another lovely and 'do-able' tutorial.
Yes, I definitely find it helps to go with the flow!
Thankyou Lou. This makes so much more sense now ❤️
You're welcome!
Amazing 😻
Thanks!
Great tutorial! Thanks.
You're welcome!
Thank you. Very nice.
I'm thrilled to learn how to draw these! Thank you!
Great video Lou, i used this design on a bowl I turned & carved. It worked out great thanks to your expectation on how to draw this successfully.
Loving this flower doodle. More please!!!❤
WOW!!! I've always struggled with the ends .... you've made it sooooo incredibly simple! Now it's quick & easy, peasy, japanesey!!! You have no idea how much frustration, wrinkles & paper you've saved me bwahahahahahahaha! Forever grateful. A multitude & endless blessings to you! Thank you once again! Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa 👋😊
Absolutely beautiful art work. 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Awesome, so I'm actually using this tutorial as a frame of reference for wire weaving. I'll Def be watching your other video. Thanks!
Thanks. Glad it was helpful!
❤❤❤
Love this! So much fun! thank you!
You are so welcome!
Amazing how you develop these designs as you go
A lot of it is repeating shapes I’ve used before - and more thinking time than I show in the videos!
I been trying Celtic for some time but was confused in some areas. Your explanations are precise and to the point. Perfectly done thanks. Am clear in the points I was confused. Thanks. Going to watch all your Celtic knots videos. Thanks again, many blessings to you & family.
Thank you, really glad it was helpful for you.
Thank you so much ❤ I did it 🍀🍀🍀🍀❤️❤️❤️🫶
Fantastic!
This looks like a ton of fun! Thanks for sharing, Lou 🌻
You’re welcome!
This is amazing…such variety of line & circles in combination…
Thanks!
I wonder if you can make a template with pencil size holes from the dotted paper so you can always start from halfway. Big holes for center dots. I dunno. Very cool video!
That’s a good idea!
Very beautiful! Thank You! ❤
Thank you too!
Omg that is so helpful, thank you!!! 😍❤
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much for this fantastic tutorial. I love it. Can't wait to give it a go. You make it look so easy but I'm sure it's not, but I will have fun trying 😊
Thanks, I hope you have fun!
i thought i was the only circle cluster artist on the planet, used to fill my peechees up with them in school
Had to look up what a peechee was! But yes, I did the same!
