As the story goes ... Robert Plant had invited Jason Bonham to be his guest for the event at the Kennedy Honors but declined because he told Robert "I have a Prior Commitment" . THIS was the Prior Commitment 🙂
Ann Wilson is 62 years old in this video. Arguably the greatest female rock voices of all time. This is the best cover I.ve ever seen. Legends performing for legends.
Some quibble about details but I think they’re FOS. That sustained artificial harmonic just prior to solo end was Diamond 💎 Level touch. Screw the haters. This whole performance was as perfection as human perfection gets!
This performance was honoring Led Zeppelin! It was at the Kennedy Center, that's why they had the medals around their necks! When the Kennedy Center honors someone as huge as they are, they always try to get someone who will do their music justice! And Heart, certainly, did a breathtaking job!
The reason Plant was teary eyed was because the choir all wore bowler hats in honor of John Bonham who was his best friend. They were not revealed until late in the song so it was a surprise.
I love that you know so much about these 2 bands. Not everyone does, and it made this reaction so much better. They are both legendary, and I grew up on these bands, especially Heart. Great reaction!
Me too! I almost gave up on watching reactions to this performance. It's so much better with the complete guitar solo. Cutting it short is the worst part of the truncated version.
The Kennedy Center approached Jason Bonham about laying in this tribute to Led Zepplin He said he would BUT only if Ann and Nancy Wilson performed the song. They did so he did. He knew the Ann ans Nancy credited Led Zeplin were their mentors and would crush it.
Heart had performed Stairway to Heaven live for years, back to the late 70's at least. This was the first time they performed it in front of Page, Plant, and Jones. They said they were extremely nervous to be playing it for them (regardless of the 1000's of concerts they'd already done), but from the old men's reaction I think they approved!
Heart has been covering Zeppelin songs for decades. They were a big influence on Ann and Nancy. In fact, I saw them cover "Rock and Roll" in 1977 on the day Elvis died. In an interview about this performance, they both said they were terrified of screwing up in front of the band. After the show, there was a reception with all the honorees and performers, and Robert told Ann that he hated when people covered their songs. He said that they nailed it. It showed by his reaction during the performance.
@@vernhoke7730 so many others butcher their songs, can’t say I blame Plant. Songs Led Zeppelin covered, they tuned into masterpieces, far superior to the originals.
Great Reaction..Ann was 62 yrs old here...Heart has so many very good songs..Yes "Barracuda" "Magic Man" "Straight On" "What About Love" "Dog And Butterfly" "Who Will You Run To" "Dreamboat Annie" "Nothing At All" among others.. On the song "Straight On" look for the live version that's from 1977 or 78..It's very good..Heart has also done a few other covers of Led Zeppelin songs..They have done "Kashmir " "Black Dog" "Rock and Roll" and the "The Battle Of Evermore"..There's a good live version of the Battle Of Evermore from about 2012.. Ann was just recently treated for Cancer..Both her and her sister had to cancel what was left of their tour recently due to her diagnosis.....
I cry every time I see this performance. Jimmy's smile is true gold! Here it is 2024, Ann Wilson is now 74 and has been diagnosed with cancer. Yet she was still touring when she was diagnosed. My prayers go out to her for a speedy recovery and I thank her for this unforgettable performance.
Even if you are Anne and Nancy, imagine how it felt to get a standing ovation from Led Zep after performing what is maybe that band's most epic songs (and probably the single most epic song from that genre)? I'm sure they felt a bit weepy-eyed, too!
Chills every time. Tears almost every time. This one is timeless. And you found a full version. Good for you young lady! Smart too for loving Led. Thank you for letting us old fogey peeps live our first Zep experiences vicariously through you again 🙏🏽 And even though this was a tribute - it’s so good I’ll call it a Zep experience, especially seeing it was clearly a “Led Zeppelin approved!” performance from ❤️ 🎤 🎸 pumping with the🩸of John Bonham 🥁
So glad you're doing this brilliant performance. Robert was emotional because of the tribute to John with the choir wearing his signature bowler hat. Great reaction as usual and Peace out girl ✌️ ☮️
Magnificant performance, wonderful reaction. And it took Heart, an orchestra, a choir, and Jason Bonham to evoke the level of emotion that four young guys did fifty three years ago. To me that speaks to the amazing talent of Led Zeppelin.
I was an undergrad in Economics at MIT from '74 to '77. I lived in Cambridge & Marblehead MA until '82 and then moved to Lexington KY in '82. Been here ever since. Why do you ask?
This was the grand finale of the Zeppelin tribute at the show with a lot of production but I actually liked the first song even more. The Foo Fighters opened the tribute with Rock and Roll and killed it in an abbreviated version. Michels Obamas reaction is funny I think hearing how loud this portion of the show was going to be to do Zep justice. Give it a listen (Kennedy Center Honors Led Zep Foo Fighters).
Heart has several Led Zeppelin covers on UA-cam. They have been fans of Led Zeppelin for many years. My favorite is their cover of "Battle of Evermore".
A beautiful tribute to the mighty Led Zep ! I can remember as a kid my Mom listening to Whole Lotta Love in her Chevy Nova and me thinking this was the coolest song I ever heard .
Awesome reaction. I loved it. In an interview with Heart Ann said before going on stage her and Nancy bumped their skull rings together and went out to perform this awesome tribute. Way to rock!
Great reaction! What made me emotional about this performance wasn't just the performance itself, which was great, and it wasn't even so much the bands response. It's that `Stairway to Heaven,` was a song, by a band that was lambasted in their early days for being "satanic rock!" Complete with allegations of backmasking satanic messages, and here it is being performed in the Kennedy Center, in from of the sitting US President, and half of DC in attendance rocking out to it. As a kid, I would have never dreamed it possible.
I think you’re emotional because these Kennedy Honors series really brings it home about the passing of time. It makes you aware of it. You’ve seen Zeppelin in their prime….young vital guys….and now you see them older…in their 60’s. And you know how accomplished they were and what’s.Ives they’ve led. And you somehow want to make time go backwards and see them young again. Robert was emotional for several reasons, as he has stated in interviews: Yes, happily surprised to see Jason there playing his dad kit; thinking again about his beat friend, and how his death had been “such a terrible waste”. And he was also remembering their youth, and how they had been rebels and iconoclasts, and what that song had meant to him back then in 1971 when he wrote those lyrics…..a lifetime ago. And seeing what that song had become, and how he had ended up there that night, in a tux…with the President and First Lady….and thinking to himself “How in hell did I wind up here? Robert is still, as he has said, a “sad old hippie at heart”. And this kind of hoopla general,Ya makes him uncomfortable. But it was the older man, looking back in his mind’s eye, and remembering the past..,how it was and what it all meant….and remembering his friend.

Jason also had to keep the performance Secret.. said it broke his heart to deceive the band
Notice Jason wearing his Dad's hat, then later the choir in the back also wearing the same hat as tribute
Robert is also Jason’s godfather. This is the only other amazing version of this song, nobody else comes close to Led Zeppelin.
I believe Dave Grohl sat in for Jason during the rehearsal, to help keep it secret.
