If you clicked on this video, thanks a lot for stopping by! This is the first in a 4 video Retrospective Documentary for the Mother series. Mother is my favorite gaming series of all time, and is filled with some of the coolest stories in video game history. I encourage you to watch the whole thing through, you don't want to miss any of this history!
Do YOU like Mother? What are some of your favorite/least favorite things about it?

The best thing in my opinion about the game was the connection of a human entity to the game protagonist. I personally entered my crush's name at the place of anna and paula, and omg what a feeling it was lol.

Total aside, but the amazing physical design of the original Mother box deserves a mention. That solid red box with the raised golden font and earth logo for the O is so visually striking, even today. I can imagine, if it were released in the West, how much it would have stood out and grabbed my attention amongst all the other Nintendo games at Babbages or Kay-Bee.

I'm gonna be honest, I have a long history with Earthbound as a series, and it all goes back to me being maybe 12 - 13 when brawl first came to the wii. I had no idea who Ness and Lucas were, but I decided to give them a try anyway. And that's when I ended up really liking them, but never got to play the games they were from.
When I found out what emulators were I decided to play Mother 1 and Earthbound first. And well, I had a blast! The story was very quirky and humorous, but it definitely knew when to buckle down and get serious, and it gave me more insight to Ness as a character. When I moved onto Mother 3, thats when I was blown away by just how emotional of a game it was. Its got some very heavy real life issues in it that made me change the way I approached certain things. Overall, thanks to this, its become my favorite RPG series of all time, and jt taught me more about life than I thought.

This was the first in the series I played. It is my favorite in the series, and my favorite NES game.
I moved to Japan three years ago, and then got married to the love of my life, a Japanese girl who does not speak english, and I would not be here if it wasn't for this game pushing me out of my comfort zone to learn Japanese.
This game has literally changed the entire course of my life in ways the 10 year-old me huddled around a keyboard and old desktop monitor, playing the game for the first time, could never have imagined.

I played Earthbound when it first released. I rented it because of the big box. Instantly fell in love. Years later, when I learned that it was actually a sequel and a game existed on NES, I scrambled to find a way to play it. This series will always be special to me.

You made me cry at the beginning of this video, when you said you don't know how to describe the ways the Mother series makes you feel. I don't know how to describe the duality of bitter and sweet emotions either. I played Earthbound when I was 14, and I'm nearly 30 now. I was going through such a confusing time in my life, and I'll never forget that summer of 2006. I'm halfway through and this video is wonderful so far! Thank you.

Earthbound is the only game I can say I have an emotional connection too. Always reminds me of simpler times. I played it when it first released at the age of 11 with a childhood friend that is now gone. A perfect game for that adolescent age. Everything about this game sends me back to those times. Smiles and tears indeed

The title "Mother" is perfect in so many ways; when you are scared or despairing, you call for mother to comfort you; and in the context of the story, who is it that gives you what you need to defeat the big bad? None other than the big bad's "mother", and it is their love for her that defeated them.

WHY DOES THIS VIDEO ONLY HAVE 3K VIEWS.
Seriously, the amount of effort and research the first 10 minutes alone must have taken is astounding. For one, you are the only person from what I can see who has ever bothered to explain what a copywriter ACTUALLY IS.
Also, got to say I love the little tricks you did to make the video seem even more professional. Such as giving shadows to the gameplay window, which stopped the frame feeling flat, which tends to happen on these long retrospective videos. And then you even added a scrolling background, which again is a small thing but it just makes things so much easier to concentrate on, because you are seeing multiple types of movement, even when you are showing just basic gameplay.
I know I am pointing out what you already know but I just wanted you to know I noticed it and its appreciated. I've watched a lot youtube docs with millions of views that dont even go through the effort you do.
Welldone and I can only hope you get more views.

I literally JUST beat this game today. Its fantastic. I came into it with low expectations and high at the same time, because I love Earthbound so much, so it took a little bit getting used to something that was slightly more primitive. But once you figure it out, and let yourself get into it, it was a joy to play.

I'm currently playing Mother 2/ Earthbound. It's one of the most unique games I've ever played. It's also incredibly balanced. Imo, it's a perfect example on how to build a balanced game. I absolutely love it. There's such an incredibly deep theme of a Mother's love for their child throughout the game. The contrast between Ness, whose mother loves him dearly and Ness being very attached to her (Ness becoming homesick if he doesn't call his mom for a prolonged period), and Pokey who has a neglectful mother who doesn't pay much mind to him and turns a blind eye when his father abuses himself and his brother.
There is a heavy theme of a Mother's love when it comes to Giygas, as well. Truly such an interesting game and series.

The original Mother 1 ads might not have been great at the time but I guarantee today they are looked upon with much admiration. They have this very atmospheric mystique to them not found in many other ad campaigns, especially for what was considered a children's toy. In a post Stranger Things world, and how lucrative nostalgia mixed with a light unsettling creepiness is, these ads are extremely intriguing to many different demographics which is the whole point of a advertisement to begin with.

mother 1 will always stick in my heart,
its the first song you hear in the franchise, mother earth. The first song to make me break down crying,
It hit me randomly, I was sitting on my chair at around 2 or 4:30. I was just there, put the Mother 1 OST on and just sat and relaxed, Mother Earth is the first one. I initially just, chilled. Like a strike of lightning, I realised what the song feels like. You are in an Alien place, you don’t know anything there. But then it feels.. warmer. You feel somebody hugging you, your (excuse the cheesiness) Mother.
This song will (as I’ve said) forever stick in my heart.

This is the greatest retrospective video i've seen on Mother series in my life. Literally, no cap. I love the way you went into every nook and cranny, every recorded history possible, and also included some words from the interview and personal word from Itoi himself on this subject.
As someone who were struggling to beat Mother 1 (due to its age and being somewhat grind-ier that what I could tolerate), I highly appreciate the almost spoiler-free analysis on the story; not gonna count the beginning and the end of the game because everybody knows that Giygue fight Ninten's whole party at final moment and yadda yadda, things end.
Still, thank you so much for cramming in more knowledge on Mother series cuz I thought that after 10+ years being immersed in this series, there would be nothing more for me to learn about Mother-turns out I was wrong. I've been playing video games for over three decades and RPGs has always been my favorite genre. Unfortunately, I missed out on EarthBound back in 1995 because of that silly ad campaign in Nintendo Power. I thought that it was a game meant for little kids (about the worst thing imaginable to a teenager) and it came out the same summer as Chrono Trigger, which I was absolutely obsessed with at the time.
I finally played EarthBound this year on the SNES mini and it was not only one of the best RPGs I've ever played, but one of the greatest video games of all time. Like a good movie, it sticks with you and impacts you in a deep and personal way. I'm now hooked on the entire Mother series! I'm deep into Mother 3 playthrough and I can't wait to tackle the original Mother after that. Even if we never get another title, I'll be forever grateful to Shigesato Itoi for creating such an amazing series that combines fun and heart in a way that few other games have.

Ended up here after watching the announcement of Earthbound & Beginnings announced for NSO in the latest Direct. I've always been intrigued by the buzz surrounding Earthbound and my only experience of it is through the characters being in Smash. However, this video has me determined to get playing the series from the start. Thank you! ❤️

At this point, I dont watch videos like these in the hopes of something unique being added to the conversation. I think the conversation itself, plus the unique observations that accompany everyone's playthtoughs are justification enough to continue seeking Mother content. I couldn't think of a better way to Honor Iwata, and appreciate Itoi

They're all great, but honestly I think 1 is my favorite. Like, on the one hand, it's really rough in some parts (that one factory dungeon can suck all the dicks), but I love how it's basically an open world game, like how you can fight Gigue with 6 different parties or whatever. And honestly I think Mt Itoi kinda works, like it's the last part of the game, and there isn't a "real" final boss fight, you just have to survive long enough to sing the Melody of Love, so Mt Itoi itself is kind of the final boss of the game.

it's a bummer i struggle with RPGs super badly. i love the essence of the mother series. it's something special all these years later, when i was maybe a fifth grader and just learning english, i still love the essence of the game. while i may not have played it as intended - i used gamegenie codes for the games because i struggle awfully with the series' combat and difficulty - i still got the message of the games. mind you that, when i was a fifth grader, it was 2004. good times
interesting that you say that about the roving tank song. i opened the NSF and had a look at the song. the reason it sounds so "impossible" is the masterful craft of the composer, who, despite the limitation, took out the most of the NES soundchip. mad respect

I've been playing Lucas in smash since brawl and I didn't really know who he or ness were so I decided to give the games a try. I loved the games and I didn't ever cry over a game before but now I did since I played the games in the MOTHER series. I'm sad that MOTHER 3 did not come to the US but I'm haply it came to the switch a few days ago. Thank you for making this video. I love the mother series and I will never stop loving it.

Dude, this is a fantastic video! Great job on the research and presentation of it! Finishing the Mother trilogy had been a goal of mine for well over a decade, ever since I was first made aware of the series through Super Smash Bros and Chuggaconroy's Let's Plays of the Mother games. I would on and off play Earthbound and Mother 3 but never fully committing, and even though I held a massive interest in the history of Mother 1, I never played it until earlier this year when both it and Earthbound were added to NSO. I decided I would finally sit down and finish the Mother trilogy as I always intended. I played through them in order, and I loved every single one of them, and while Mother 3 ended up being my favorite, the music, charm, and atmosphere of Mother 1 hooked me in the most and it has become one of my favorite RPGs. It always makes me sad to see some people ignore Mother 1 in favor of Earthbound or Mother 3. While I do agree that it's an acquired taste, it's legacy and importance cannot be ignored. I guess I gravitated to it so much because I'm a fan of older RPGs lmao

My brother was interviewed for the documentary, "Mother to Earth." Pretty weird seeing his name listed on IMDB. There were a few prototype cartridges that became very valuable. I remember my neither bringing it home from work, explaining what a ROM cartridge is. It's pretty cool looking as a kid since I'd never seen a cartridge with a swappable chip.

There's the occasional line where you sound a bit unsure or uncomfortable, but I'm really enjoying your content. There are constant growing pains, but you really seem to understand how to reach your viewers. Keep it up, and I hope you do a Mother 3 video with the fan translation, and I hope even more that you can have a video on its official release some day!
