      It was empty for many reasons. However, if you enjoyed it, then your movie ticket was well spent. I have nothing against anyone enjoying something until they try to shove it down my throat. Its sad that some will make a religious crusade out of it. I believe it wasn't a total loss if it caused people to want to watch the original as well as enjoy the sequel. Both films have there weaknesses to be sure.

    0:46 I've worked on this particular shot, with my colleagues of course. My job was to composite all of the elements. I remember when I first saw the original Blade Runner and I was only starting with CG, my thought was "this is exactly the kind of movie I wish I could work on, but this movie is already made". Then some 15 years later I got the chance to actually work on the new Blade Runner movie. It was very challenging, many details to pay attention to. I love the aesthetic of Blade runner.

      @Luca48882 4 роки тому +53

      I think it's not even remotely arguable that you and others did a great job with the looks, but I cannot help but feel sorry since the potential wasn't utilized that well, you could have been part of one of the greatest movies like, ever, and instead you will only have fanboys of the genre that tell whomever doesn't like the film that they don't have the attention necessary to watch through it. I wish Villeneuve and Dick/Fancher/Green didn't murder it, and wish you better "luck" in the future!

    • @markoradinkovic665
      @markoradinkovic665 4 роки тому +102

      @@Luca48882 The original can not be replicated. One of the reasons I believe is that it wasn't really planned as much as the new one. No one really knew how exactly is going to look like, and the writing was more organic in my opinion. I still like the new one though. But one thing I wish they kept was the original score (not from the original movie but the very new composition written for this movie), which was changed completely at the last minute. We've watched rough cuts of these sequences and they had a completely different score. That sequence with Joi, Officer K, and the prostitute had a very different score, it was a bell that was hitting every couple of seconds, and it was very hypnotizing, it was so trippy, I loved it. Then watching a final cut I was surprised to hear a different score. That is one big thing about Blade Runner 2049, its new score can not compete with the Vangelis score. Another thing differing from the original is how characters were used... I don't think they've utilized the presence of Rachel for example. I would argue that comparing to the original this one had a bit harder time tracking so many characters. But still, the overall atmosphere is true to the original, the vibe is there. I think people will grow to like it over time, it really isn't a movie that should track this new age of blockbuster sci-fi movies.

      Agreed that B2R 2049 could not be perfect, but it was magnificent. Thanks to you and all the others efforts. It truly worked as a successful sequel. I was convinced for a year before hand that, "they were going to screw it up", but you all didn't. It stands on it's own, which cannot be said for many, if not most sequels. Agreed also that Vangelis orginal soundtrack was so good that it was nearly a character in the movie. I initially found Zimmer's score to be harsh and it was it was played at a painful volume in the theater that I saw it in. But when I bought the DVD and played it at home, at a more normal volume, it grew on me. Will be very interested to see what Zimmer creates for Dune. Are you involved in Dune? Looks like it's going to be brilliant, and the cast seems very well-suited for their roles.

    • @markoradinkovic665
      @markoradinkovic665 3 роки тому +47

      @@alanparsonsfan Funny you asked, I did work on "Dune" as well. However I got on the show much later, I did only a few shots. Yeah, "Dune" is really following up on the aesthetic of the original, but I am also noticing some visual similarities with "Blade Runner 2049", mainly because the same people are making it. It's the same director and director of photography is the guy who did some great work on "Killing them Softly", "Foxcatcher" and "Rogue One" if I am not mistaken. Dune has been around in postproduction for a while now, and that is a good sign, I believe they are doing their best to make this a really good movie. The original "Dune" suffered a limited budget, but the project was huge. This one has some good actors, a great budget, a great director, and a well-established collaboration with VFX facilities and supervisors. I really believe it will be a good movie. Fingers crossed.

      I thought it was really touching.
      Joe finds out that he's not the offspring of the two replicants; confirming that he's just another manufactured replicant, is devastated at this revelation, had his only companion (Joi) destroyed, and was left to rot after Luv took Deckard away. He had nothing to live for that gave him meaning and purpose.
      Instead of just letting himself rot, or doing nothing, he took action under his own free will and fought to free Deckard, which ended up wounding him so bad that he died after freeing him.
      Dying fighting for an ideal is about as human-like as it gets, and I thought it was a satisfying ending because he forged his own path for the first time in his life rather than doing something just because someone told him to do it.
      I would put this movie in my top 5 favorites, it is really special.

      I loved the thing, but it's a long slog!
      Some scenes were awkward; the sex encounter, cringey and the final fight feeling lifted from elsewhere. On release it struggled to attract filmgoers outside cult followers of the original, particularly young women. The dreamlike atmosphere and pacing probably alienated those only accepting pandering, crowdpleasing glee or nonstop action.
      To these failures the film stands apart in history, best remembered for its equally staggering effects and cinematography.

I love the original Bladerunner and Consider it one of my favorite "Modern" SciFi movies. So I thought.. "what did I just see"? It's not a sequel, really. It's different. Yes it is the same world.. but it's not, it's more in the future. I thought and thought.. and thought. I viewed the movie at home. I bought the BluRay.. I thought some more. I watched the original versions again and again. I can now say I love BR2049, as much as a stand alone movie as a continuation of the original. It will never match the original, but it was a much needed addition to the family. To answer your question, this movie can and does make you think, if you want it to.

    Definitely, Denis Villeneuve did a great job in this movie. He continued the same line that Riddley Scott begin in Blade Runner. Both movies are only for us, the real fans of the world of replicants, not for a common "movie popcorn" audience.

    This movie was marvellous and it blew my mind more than any movie I’ve ever seen. Seeing BLADE RUNNER 2049 in IMAX was a breath of fresh air knowing that we still have people who care about how a film is put together… thanks Denis! instead of creating something that people would feel familiar with, this movie took a huge risk in simply existing. Awesome mashup of some incredibly beautiful shots from BR2049 by the way!!! Love this edit.

    Blade Runner has been my favorite film for decades. Upon viewing BR2049, I was in awe at how they expanded upon the world Ridley and Jordan(Cronenweth) created. Without trying to mimic or fan service the film, Denis and Deakins found a way to craft something so beautiful and complex that like the 1982 film, will be misunderstood and considered a failure at first then discovered to be the masterpiece it actually is. I don’t need decades to know this.

    Just found your channel, and I honestly expected this to be a video essay, but then I noticed it just kept going without being interrupted haha.
    Also I think the title is very interesting when you apply it to a realistic rather than a cinematographic perspective .. "The Beauty of Blade Runner 2049". Is this dystopian-like future of the human race universe actually beautiful? Maybe not, but the movie seems to try to say that heroes like K try to keep it as human as possible by carrying out selfless acts like in the movie.
    This video was great but you should definitely consider uploading it in 4K. I think it's definitely worth it.
    P.S. My favorite part was 2:32, where the music syncs with Joi's smile. Gave me goosebumps haha

    I am reminded of the time a friend of my brother lent us his copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey, as neither of us had seen it and this friend, we'll call him Ryan, insisted we do so at our earliest convenience.
    We watched the movie, and it confused the hell out us. It wasn't bad per se, but it was weird, didn't seem very coherent, (in hindsight) much of the story was completely lost on us and overall left a lot to be desired.
    My brother returned it and told Ryan what we thought of it, which wasn't much. Ryan, disappointed and possibly offended, said we missed the entire point of why he wanted us to see it: not for flashy, "mindless entertainment" but as an experience to behold; the cinematography, the music, to broaden our minds and appreciate it as a technical piece, a work of art... Riiight.
    After getting over my irritation toward his words and not thinking much of his taste in movies, stopped to really think about what we had seen, the faint feelings it had roused, past the dazzling or unexplained visuals, finding moments of the film that spoke volumes without dialogue... Then it dawned on me that in my typical movie mindset I had entirely overlooked everything the film had going for it. While I can't speak for my brother, discussing the matter afterwards he seemed to have reached a similar understanding. This has since challenged how I watch and enjoy movies, and also finding more enjoyment in a broader range of styles than before. Recalling now it was preceded by the time when my dad introduced me to Blade Runner which I found intriguing through my dad's commentary, the presentation and the atmosphere, if a bit slow. The sum of these eventually led to me seeing the equally unforgettable Blade Runner 2049. Suffice to say I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel, and reflecting on the past, in part thanks to Ryan and 2001, but most influenced by my dad showing me the original. Thanks, dad.
    Oddly enough, as enthralling as 2049 was to me, I've only seen it once. The memory and the feeling of seeing it have remained so strong that I haven't needed to rewatch it, while fully intending to. Though now after having watched this homage and written all this out I'm feeling it's about the right time to do so. In contrast, 2001: A Space Odyssey, I still think is weird and have no desire to see a second time soon. Take what you will from that.
    "Ryan", wherever you are, you have my gratitude but I'm still a little salty for being called uncultured even though it was mostly true.

      @@uremawifenowdave "I can't do that, Nowdave."
      Misquote now put aside: I've considered it, and have put it off until it's something I want to do.
      "Ryan" said the same about its visuals, which has not always been a statement that inspires confidence, but not only are you both right about "for the time" there were moments more memorable for me than many of today's uses of visuals, and the when not to fill the screen with them. What always comes to mind visually is the 'chase' scene attempting to retrieve the free falling (flying?) astronaut after getting spaced by HAL: the hud of the pod/ship controls shining on Dave's face as he chased down his associate from tumbling into deep space, and was a remarkable scene to me even then and has stuck with me ever since, just at the time wished it was shorter as it kept dragging on. Much like the rest of the movie. There was a lot to like about it as a whole, and I enjoyed it far more looking back on it than I did watching it.
      So, OK. I'll plan on seeing it again. Maybe I can get my brother on the idea and rewatch it together, that'd be cool.
      Thanks for the reply, and for reading my wall of text. Ended up longer than intended.
