  • We’re deep into our Luʻuaeaahikiikekumu expedition in and around the Lili’uokalani Ridge Seamounts and we’ve seen all manner of wonderful and whimsical creatures. First up in this highlight video, we have an adorable dumbo octopus undulating in the current and up-close shots of its unique skin texture. Next, it’s a stunning view of the control van-favorite sea dandelion: aka a communal siphonophore super organism. After that, check out a chunky sea star, tiny Chaunacops, and sleek Halosaur. Take a trip to the bottom of the sea and watch these ocean animals interact with ROV Hercules’ camera.
With this expedition, we are returning to Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to build on the accomplishments of the 2021 Luʻuaeaahikiikalipolipo expedition, which mapped the seamounts we’re now surveying for biodiversity. Learn more about this expedition funded by NOAA Ocean Exploration via the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute with additional support from the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries: nautl.us/37kH3ol

The sea/ocean dandelion is a colony of individual animals, all working together. Some individuals protect the colony, others catch food, and some reproduce. What is interesting is that they actually share tissues, for example, they have one shared "community" stomach. This means that all get to digest what one of them eats. I'm guessing that they are *very* soft as a change in pressure, or ocean currents, may cause the colony to fall apart. But I don't really know why it was falling apart in the video. Maybe it wasn't?

I love that you said they all "get to" digest what one individual eats, like it's a fun shared experience 😂 but imagine your colony-mate eating pizza when you want a burger...oh well, guess you're having pizza 🤷

Man! That little beauty really stole the show. I mean, how many people really saw it live at the moment it was broadcast? For some, that could be the once in a life time touch, that changes their whole world and they've discovered their purpose. And we were all here sharing that unique moment together.
Our lives have touched. Thank you ship and crew. And thank you Nautilus Live for letting us all see that together. What a great way to bring a world ❤ together.

When lava pours out near the sea surface
    Tremendous volcanic explosions sometimes occur
    In time, sub-marine seamounts
    Or islands, are formed
When lava flows underwater it behaves differently
A new contraption to capture a dandelion in one piece has been put together by the crew
The preparation for a dive is always a tense time
