  • OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY: So now I am installing the TUFTEX panels on the sides of the greenhouse. TUFTEX PolyCarb corrugated panels are our toughest building panel. Made with a polycarbonate thermoplastic polymer in an octagonal-wave profile, TUFTEX PolyCarb corrugated panels are 20 times stronger than 5 oz. fiberglass corrugated panels and are designed to withstand a wide range of surface temperatures: 270° F to -40° F.
    All TUFTEX PolyCarb panels are well suited to outdoor applications where light transmission is desired. TUFTEX PolyCarb panels are perfect for greenhouses, outdoor gardening structures, and sun porches.

    Just completed the build here. The wife is thrilled to start her seedlings and herb gardens. I built ours on the back deck (since deer wiped us out last year) and used this same material. With the back door leaking warm air in the winter, it created a perfect spot to heat the greenhouse using conditioned air we were losing already!

      Deep South Homestead The weather here in Ga gets over 100 degrees in the summer. If I use the Tuftex paneling will it get too hot you think? I am a novice as you can tell but intend to build one this year. Any advice is appreciated.

      Ours has been getting to 100 and it is Feb. You will need fans(which we will purchase soon) and ventilation. We don't grow anything in the summer, we use it to dry crops, like field corn.

      Gotta love the south, Danny!! :-)
      I've been keeping an eye on our greenhouse and propping the doors open to let it vent more as it gets STIFLING on these warmer days! Good to know it's working so well, but darn!!!

      OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY / Man wish i could have seen this before going and buying "2" of those harbor freight greenhouses....... that outfit you have there looks great 👍🏻 !!!! Are you going to start any aquaponics in there by chance ? Anyway ..... hope you don't mind lots of questions cause something tells me your going to get quite a few!

      Thnx for mentioning this. A clear roof even in MO will bring on oven-like temps in late spring - late fall. You really have to think through how you plan to use it & disregard blanket statements like "get the clear" panels.
      I am lookong at Stabilit semi-translucent sky light panels for roofing. They will stand up to hail.

    On the foam end pieces, since I also am a one man show, I've found that the quickest way to go is snap a chalk straightline for the foam edge guide, then give a squirt of spray adhesive along side of the line, use both hands and anchor one end to the glue against the line while holding the other end up a little and then carefully and quickly work it onto the glue toward the other end along the line. Do this everywhere you need it first and it makes putting the panels on (almost) effortless buy comparison! Hope that helps on future builds.

    Just a suggestion: when installing the foam backing to hold the panels staple the foam leveled vertically and you'll have a better install.

    Hi Doug, I have used these panels from Lowe’s to cover my raised deck over 16 years ago and they still are transparent today. I am looking forward to see you finish the log cabin for your mother as well. I know how it feels to work by yourself. All the projects that I work on are done by me, myself, and I…lol. I know that from time to time you have help from Gary and other people in you area. I really enjoy watching your videos keep up the good work.

    Wow, in watching you all these several months, I learned we were were homesteaders for 35 years. We didn't call it that, because back then we considered homesteaders to be way back when the homestead act was enacted. We were just people who wanted a better way of life without all the things society expects you to fulfill. We lived at 4200' elevation and had many, many exciting experiences in learning what we were doing, but I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. Life and death experiences made us have to move. Your greenhouse reminds me of our cook shack we made the first summer we were there. We camped there until our house was, not done, but we could move in. Thanks for the reminder of our yesteryear.

    Just found your video. Nice build. I am an old metal building installer. If your posts are uniform, and the panels are uniform you can stack the panels and predrill all the holes. That makes install much faster. You don't have to keep switching from driver to bit.

    I live in Eastern Canada, we used that product for our Patio roof(20ftx8ft) as well as our side door of 12ftx8ft. We used that so light can get through it & it doesn't shade our windows. It has survived 6 Canadian winters, & our recent Nor Easter storm (its like a hurricane, winds of 140 to 170 kph, but with ice and freezing cold temperatures) I didn't bother using the foam spacer 7 just screwed the valleys with the rubber washer hex screws. never had a leak or problem yet.

  • @SuperHurdman

    Here is a tidbit for you Doug about drilling your holes if you put the drill in reverse with your screw in it you can drill the material and the screw acts like a drill bit of coarse you put it back in forward when you drive the screw into the base material saves you predrilling all the holes. I always do this in wood boards close to the end this way it does not split the board when you drive a screw in it! Good idea "A"

    Been enjoying watching this build. My husband and I are planning on buying our homestead next year after years of urban homesteading. Due to school year and moving out of state we want to move in June which means not much gardening. So we plan to focus that first fall/winter on building a greenhouse, chicken coop, and whatever else needs done. We really like this design and will probably do something similar.

    • @Tuftexpanel-USA

      @Tuftexpanel-USA 7 років тому +2

      TUFTEX polycarbonate panels block more than 99% of UV radiation, and pass 89% of PAR light from the sun. The test results are very similar to clear window glass. Our tests results are available on tuftexpanel.com.

      I really like using these panels. They seem really strong for their weight and have held up great so far outside but have a question: What is the recommended procedure to air seal a miter cut end of panels as my roof line is angled on the gable ends? I have some "closure strips" but those are designed for square cut panels... Also wondering if those strips were necessary in the middle of the panels in this video or just the ends for air leaks ( that's only place I planned to use them)

    Doug, I used this stuff on my shed roof a couple years ago as I was going to use it as a greenhouse too. It had 2 issues. in summer, it was way too hot, and in winter it had loads of condensation which dripped all over the plants. I changed it for a timber roof after that. Tony

    • @scottieshawn4814
      @scottieshawn4814 Рік тому +1

      Lots of ventilation will help with both issues along with some shade cloth for summer days to help keep the plants from scorching and allow air flow.

    I have to say, it's looking great! I do think you'll be disappointed that it's not about 3 times bigger when you get to start using it. You might try using a small amount o caulk as glue to hold the foam strips in place.

    Hi Doug and Stacy. Great channel! My wife and I watch your videos all the time.
    A little tip about the panels... you could save a little time by tacking down the support pieces on either end with a small nail, staple or 2 sided carpet tape to keep in in place while you drill your holes and screw it down. Because the nail or staple will be beneath the panel, it won't be affected by the elements. Doing that will also keep it from flopping around while you are trying to work.
    Cheers!

      I don't have one personally, but Doug, (from the video above), made one 3 months ago titled "Building A Greenhouse In The Winter - Foundation And Post". Its pretty good, you should check it out. He also made one 6 months ago, I'm guessing in the summer, titled "Outdoor Kitchen Build - Forms And Post".
      Check out the video list on Doug and Stacy's channel. You may have to scroll down a bit, but if you use the search icon and type in the titles I gave you, you should find them in a snap.
      Hope that helps!

      @JerryPaulTreeCreations 7 років тому +1

      Glad I could help, George. As far as the mesh goes, I've seen it used like that before but I don't have any experience doing it.
      Good on you for going off the grid! (or close to it :) ) My wife and I aren't off grid at this point, but do live in a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada, where I'm a wood turner/wood worker and she is a school assistant and gardener.
      We watch Doug and Stacy quite a bit, and are enjoying watching the growth of their homestead. They are very inspiring people who often share great ideas on their channel. Stacy's recipes, although sometimes a little too "veggie" for me, are awesome, and she always has a handy tip to make life a little easier. With my own carpentry background, I really enjoy watching Doug work. It's easy on my back. LOL Doug has many other practical skills besides that too. Together, Doug and Stacy are a wealth of knowledge for anyone thinking about going off grid. Their combined knowledge and passion is what makes us tune in when we see they've posted something new.
      Best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

    Doug you are building all of these out buildings adjacent to each other but not connected, why? why not have the green house connected to a wall of the house so you can walk out without shoveling snow, it wold also be a wind break and warm that side of the house? I see the old farm houses here with wrap around verandas and most have a shed wing that goes off out the back and has a work shop, wood storage, a garage, an outhouse toward end and a chicken coupe attached or adjacent, must be some reason they did this.

    I really want to use tuftex, but we just can't afford it just yet. I'm hoping to do a build with less than 150 using what I have at home in the bone yard and greenhouse plastic. At least so I can get starts going this year.

    Doug, I have a question...are you worried about hot spots with using clear panels versus diffused panels? I need to replace my panels on my greenhouse and I heard milky colored will make the sunshine more dispersed not causing hot spots from the sun in the greenhouse... need your input.

    Hello. Are you going to keep a gap at the bottom open for air flow? I have seen other greenhouses do this and they say it works great. Thanks.

    I am hoping to build a greenhouse soon using a side deck on our house as a base…. The floor is rotten but I would like to put plywood down and build up from there on the existing structure.

    I’m putting a greenhouse in my backyard. I also live in Pennsylvania. (Franklin County) I’m considering getting the large frame at Lowes or Home Depo. I think I would save money building it myself. I do everything by myself, but I’m really good at it! Haha I garden and can what I grow. I’ve always wanted to live self sufficiently, and there’s no better time to do it than right now. Any suggestions would be great. I loved your video! Thank you!
