    I love Pat's playing in this it's superb, but I feel when I listen to Wes do the song there is a little more instrumental interplay. Not to say this version doesn't have that. Wes, soloed a lot less, and let all the music breath around him. That's what truly made him amazing in my eyes.

    This reminds me of NYC 1968 fried Chicken and Waffles on Sunday night @ a restaurant listening to Jimmy Smith on Organ. At least I think it was Jimmy? But it was unforgettable. I was with my Dad and Brother at Xmas time taking gifts to relatives. Cigarettes were 37 cents back home in the South, but in NYC a pack was $1.45 and I thought that was outrageous.

    Bravi! This is a nice performance by Pat and his secret euro-agents. Proving that Italians really do get jazz this rhythm section is bouncing nicely on this super Wes tune which is all about the implied cross-rhythm (3/4-6/8, 2/4) though Jimmy Cobb was on the live Wes version I think with Wynton Kelly on piano (heavy cats to dep for). Pat's tone is excellent here, and his major dominant lick is brave at 3.28 but works except for the out. so easy to drop the time. The Hammond to me sounds a bit under-fed, and isn't glowing incandescent with overcooking AT-7s, like eg Joey's at a similar Pat gig at Umbria, but he's nailing the Mel Rhyne nasal twang. The 4.52 augmented lick is savage but by 5.48 its meandering, toward a nice final head where they get the feel rite. Thanks for posting.

    • @stephenbaker942
      @stephenbaker942 8 років тому +7

      +Deely Stan As someone who loves death metal, fusion, world music, all types of jazz, etc... I don't understand why people have such contentious attitudes toward other forms of music. Why think of them as "the enemy"? I support anyone who has invested hours of their lives learning and honing a craft. The surprising thing you may find is how many of these metal guitarists love jazz. Especially with today's crop of young talent, the more progressive and technical metal players are well versed in many jazz techniques. And I can't Imagine someone like Pat Martino, who views music holistically, would have such a contentious view of other musicians based on their specific genre. Music is ONE thing. It's only our egos that cause us to fashion it into weaponry. Cheers, my friend.

    • @076657
      @076657 5 років тому +2

      Shreding and that kind of thing is garbage. It's not for the music. It's not melodic. Jazz is melodic. When metal gets melodic it's usually corny.

  • @MrKrOn13
    @MrKrOn13 2 роки тому +1

    Man these comments.Everyone has a different version of the song.It should be played however every artist wants and fits his style.It would be absolutely boring if he played it exactly like Wes.It also gives everyone something new to hear or add to his/her playing and improve their version of the song.Stop with this minimalistic way of thinking expect if you are kids,cause if you are you must grow up learn to play even a third as good as this man,gather experience as a musician and listen to many jazz players and then talk about Pat Martino and compare his style to others which is not a competition by the way.And all this is just for the song im not even debating about the improv.

    I've been listening to "Full House" played by Wes for decades, and cannot help but regard it as the yardstick. Well, Pat's play here sounds a bit shallow without as much groove or drive. It's as if a straight A student tries to emulate his master but cannot quite make it.

    • @patrickmullins4552
      @patrickmullins4552 7 років тому +9

      Wes is the King man but damn I wish I "emulated" a tenth as well as Pat Martino. I love his tone. Full muted flat wound smoky goodness!

      A} The original Full House had one of the greatest rhythm sections ever in Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb B} this club date is clearly not Pat in his prime C} Wes may be the greatest jazz guitarist of all time

    • @MrKrOn13
      @MrKrOn13 2 роки тому

      slow it down then and hear the groove.its not straight and you can clearly hear it.its difficult to hear it because he is playing at a very fast pace but is you listen carefully its there or you maybe feeling it unconsiously and you dont know it.

    • @076657
      @076657 5 років тому +1

      It's been a long time, his first album El Hombre is perfect, I think at that time the feel of Pat Martino, when he was 22, was so natural honest and much closer to the Wes influence.
      He sounds plasticky to me now too, but because of the overly muffled guitar tone and the organist who I don't quite dig. It's not elevator music to me but it sounds more artificial somehow.

    Pretty good, but nowhere near the original w. Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, PC and JimmyCobb, IMO.
    Martino also does the bridge twice for some reason, probably to put his stamp on the tune, but it does not improve it.
