At this moment I am going thru the process of the ICP which the Gracies have put together, and I do have to say it is amazing. I realy feel honoured to be able to be part of and accepted into the GJJ Family around the world. The information you get at GU is priceless and so detailed. Even with no experience, they will take you by the hands, and lead you in the right direction.
i'm currently a brown belt in sport bjj school and i'm currently going thought the instructor certification process. So i've experienced both styles of learning. just learning the basic gracie combatives has plugged a bunch of holes in my jiu-jitsu. i've progressed from 1 stripe purple to brown in 6 months learning the basic Gracie combatives. And now that i'm in the instructor certification process. i'm learning about their method of teaching and it's great. I think of it like visually and verbally sculpting jiu jitsu for students.
This is really cool! Johnny should also guest lecture at any university for a business class. So much of college is full of stodgy professors without any real world experience or success.
I think a lot of the GU CTC’s without blackbelts have Renner and Ryon as the promoting instructor for all their color belts. Gracies are and always have been the best at marketing and business.
All belt promotions have to be approved by rener ryron or a black belt that they certify. All purple belts under gracie university have to go to Torrance to prove their belt. As far as I know the only two places that can promote you to purple through GU is in Torrance or Tulsa. There might be some more level 4 ctc with certified black belts. Brown and black belts are given directly under rener and ryron. You have to spend a week with them for your black belt.
But short answer is he doesn't promote anyone. For combatives and blue belt you take a video evaluation test and rener ryron or a black belt approves it.
Promotions can be made up to the color held by the instructor. For example, a purple belt can promote up to a 4 stripe blue belt. A brown belt can promote up to a 4 stripe purple belt. Brown belts can only be promoted by black belts. From brown belt to black belt only 2 stripe black belt can give the promotion. Not all BJJ schools follow this though. Which in my opinion shamefully dilutes the Art. At my schools. Only Purple belts can teach basic fundamentals class utilizing blue belts as assistants. Brown belts & black belts are head instructors/owners. This keeps the level of instruction(product) top notch. After all that's what the students(clients) are paying for. Quality over quantity our goal. Having lots of paying students is great, but not if they aren't learning solid self defense fundamentals. Moreover having world class BJJ practitioners(students) will keep you in business for the long run. Plus it's far more rewarding. Oss!

imagine learning from a blue belt wtf? they only have like 2 years experience and may not be able to give perfect advice to people whereas a black belt could..?
It's up to people to chose who they train under but I remember back in the day when I used to drive 2 hours to train with a blue belt. That's 2 hours to get there and another 2 to get back home.
Understand the concern, but I can assure you that a blue belt under the Gracie University umbrella knows what blue belts should know but sadly often don’t today, which is the basic self-defense curriculum. If they are running a CTC, they also know how to teach and are required to take actual teaching courses and hands-on seminars. Trust me not everyone who knows a craft knows how to convey it to others. That is its own skill. That said, you know what you are getting with a CTC which is the very thing that piqued the interest of most of us who began this journey, the skills to defend ourselves.
If a blue belt can't teach white belts then they don't deserve to be a blue belt. As like purple to blue, brown to purple, and black to brown. That's the whole reason for a curriculum.
I hate this “they are a sports gym” and therefore don’t have “street” Jiu Jitsu Nonsense. Sports could do more self defense and street prep to be sure, but there is no better stress test of your jiujitsu than a competition and having another human trying to rip your limbs off and strangle you faster than you can rip theirs off.
I'm just amazed that 350 people opted to learn jiu jitsu from a blue belt instead of one of the many black belts that own a gym in California
Well, you don’t need a PhD to teach middle or high school, and a student at that level does not need a tutor with a Master’s degree…
Same. Especially in his area. It's very rural, there aren't alot of people overall

Everyone in any business needs to watch this.
#1 rule to follow:
*NEVER BE LATE FOR JIU JITSU*
I hate warm ups....but when I was a white belt, I was always on time.
Worth mentioning that Apple Valley is now one of the "Elite" CTCs.
“ it’s better to know jujitsu, then no jujitsu.” Rener Gracie

How do his students get promoted? A purple belt can't promote correct?

Traditionally only black belts are allowed to promote belts. And only a 2nd degree or higher can promote to a black belt
