    This reminds me of a mk2 cavvy we went to see many moons ago ! About 1991 ! It was a complete basket case and the chap wanted 300 quid - I asked how many miles were on her and he said "how many do you want on her sur" we then went for a lovely mk2 Golf CL which was completely genuine, Full history even in them days and spotless - we still have that Golf today and she is treated like royalty !! Great video Calvin !

    The GOV UK page for checking MOT history is the first thing a potential buyer should check, also aswell as the milage, I also look through what it may have noted as previous failures or advisories so you can check if the work has been done when you go to look at it (also look out for things like corrosion etc)

You know it’s funny, I bought a cat D car (as it was back then) and it was one of the best cars I’ve had, BUT, I did my checks. Even paid AA for a full check over of the car. Its the modifications. potential buyers of modified cars like receipts of parts used, labour costs, mapping details and where and when etc. There's that many out there people can buy a genuine example and start a fresh tuning it with bills, history etc.

    Lots of unrecorded crashed damaged vehicles out there, so don't rely solely on vehicle history checks. Went to have a look at a Golf once, history check, perfectly fine, the car had clamp marks in the sills where it had been on a jig.

    • @danielwhiteley5941
      @danielwhiteley5941 2 роки тому +8

      Clamp marks mean nothing , having worked in the accident repair trade for over 30 years I’ve repaired thousands of cars , a recorded vehicle means it’s been written off either due to financial reasons or severe structural/other damage (such as flood /fire amongst others) a normal accident does not instantly get recorded on the database I have repaired identical cars , same spec/age with near identical damage but with different mileage which values them different , one was not written off but the other was not , to be recorded all comes down to cost and value , cars are designed to bend to protect the occupants a 5mph knock can move the front end of a car over 20 mm and that’s why they have clamp marks , to re align and measure them

    • @shroomiestshroom3655
      @shroomiestshroom3655 2 роки тому +6

      @@danielwhiteley5941 but it should be recorded if a car has had to be straightened in a jig, regardless of how well the work has been done the structure of the car is weaker than when it left the factory, something of which you should have the right to know about before buying, especially if you plan to travel with children. Instead its covered up so they can resell the car at a higher value because they know no one will pay full price for a car that has been damaged and bent in the past, and many families would reject them for cars that have never been in an accident. Just a scummy thing to do, its no wonder most mechanics are not trusted.

    • @danielwhiteley5941
      @danielwhiteley5941 2 роки тому +3

      @@shroomiestshroom3655 it only weapons structural integrity if it bends so far and in certain ways , cars are designed to do this . They even get tweaked at the factory in some cases during production if something has gone out of tolerance, just because it has been pulled on a jig it doesn’t mean the structure of the car is weaker , as a modern body repair technician we have to learn about structural compounds of the metals which are used in building vehicles and how they bend /break /molecular structure changes under stress heat and impact , it’s the same with the “cut n shut” mentality of people , you can actually do that safely if done with the correct techniques and methods because all a repair is just that , cutting a panel off and replacing /welding in a new panel ! But done correctly and to manufacturer specifications it’s perfectly correct and safe and as I said a vehicle is only recorded on the register if classed as a “write off” and that basically depends on age mileage and costs of repairs and in worst case the severity of the damage as it couldn’t be structurally safe anymore , I’ve owed plenty of write offs and had them on the road with all my children in because I knew how they were repaired , and as for mechanics not being trusted I wouldn’t know about that as it’s body repair technicians which repair accident related damage not grease monkeys

    • @leebenstead7171
      @leebenstead7171 2 роки тому

      @@danielwhiteley5941 You have completely missed my point. I was merely stating people should not rely solely on vehicle history checks because ( for many reasons of I'm not going to go in to) some accidents go unrecorded, doing ones own visual checks is important, if (as in my case) signs of a previous repair/s are found this would warrant further investigation. 'In my case' the vehicle had been poorly repaired and was unsafe. The clamp marks were the first indication I needed investigate further. You - 'Clamp marks mean nothing' Also you - 'a 5mph knock can move the front end of a car over 20 mm and that’s why they have clamp marks , to re align and measure them'. You need to make up your mind.

      @@leebenstead7171 You’re right, irrespective of what work was done the prospective buyer should be aware of what’s gone on with the vehicle they’re looking to buy. It’s a simple as that. You’re absolutely right about the importance of doing the all important checks for the sake of £20 quid because had the bloke you bought it from bothered to do the checks he would have got the right money from you . I can crack a good guess at what's happened.
    Previous owner had a private plate on this car, when they sold it, they brought and put on brand new 2013 plates (the ones it has currently), and retained their private plates. When the car was then MOT'd the VIN or V5 probably "got lost" and or missed, so mileage started at zero for this reg (hence the 18000 miles on it).
    You need to do an extended check/car vertical/call HPI or something to find out when that Reg was changed and what it was prior to that. MOT from 2017 on history so it was probably changed after first MOT in 2016. Be worth looking down this route as it could just be an administration issue and an honest mistake. It's a shame they've tried lying to you and doctoring the service book though

    You should use VCheck going forward. Shows if a car has been salvaged. A lot of the gold standard checks such as HPI and Experian do not show this. Seen some whoppers on a facebook group called dodgy cars.

    Still low if it's 800+ miles difference possible with it being changed on display to kph instead of mph at andy smiths service station just off the m5 junction 7 where you can meet the guy lol for the effort of clocking it back around 800 miles.🙈. ...👊👍👍

    Some mot testers just don't pay attention to what number they enter. It happened to my car. 2012 - 108k, 2014 - 160k, 2015 - 121k, but in 2014 it had a failed test five days before the passed test with 117k, which is in line with the mileage history. A typo and the owner could loose thousands when selling the car.
