      It is proof, in my experience. Every show I've played and put over-thinking to the side, was always a fluid set. Have fun and explore when you have some free time alone.

    Traditional left-hand grip has always fascinated me, and so few drummers use it anymore. Thanks for keeping it alive and explaining it so well. You are a prodigious musician and you are going places. I look forward to following your career.

    "...but I just play the drums, that's it, I just hit this, I play musical, I play drums"..... So great, so humble, what Greyson says makes a lot of sense.... This guy is so good!

    So insightful for any musician let alone (especially) drummers, feeling out what feels right > prescribed fundaments or forms.
    I can see immediately the relaxation/overall distribution of tension in the hand/wrist in your technique Vs. “wristing” it, and you can see the benefits of this. In singing, I can get caught up on placement and form which distracts from what feels right also, so it’s a great reminder to strike the right balance and not close off possibilities that feel good for your person/instrument in the song/performance. Very inspiring, thanks for the wisdom!

    Been waiting on a video like this from you for a long ass time now, my man lol. You killed it here, and I am looking forward to hopefully more vids like these from you! Just hearing you describe your own thoughts that pop into your head as you're playing is so valuable to all musicians on instruments.
    I'm mainly a lead guitarist, but I started out on drums (which I can still do a decent job of playing them now), and your playing and techniques absolutely blew me away just as soon as _I_ first discovered you on IG when your posts kept popping up in my ecplore page. You're by far my favorite drummer on IG right now, and it really feels like there is no parallel competitor in your age and stature right now. Seriously, you have the makings of becoming one of the greatest drummers ever out there, and you're definitely on the right track to getting to that level.
    Your verbal techniques can also be applied to other instruments very successfully; i.e. "don't overthink it," etc. Man, you got _IT_ . Glad to see you pursuing and living out your dreams and doing what you love to do. Keep up the great work, man!!

    Everyone who plays traditional grip has issues they have to manage. It's almost a full time job! Bravo to you for keeping the faith. I gave been playing for 50 years and am tweeking my left hand from time to time.
    Joe Morello would say, move to release the tension.

    Hi Grayson. I've commented on some of your videos before. Just keep doing what you do best. That is playing drums playing music and having fun!! Keep your core skills together at all times if you can. One of my teachers, the great Gary Chester, said to me what is true to your heart will always stay true to your heart. He also said be a human being first and a musician / drummer second!! Enjoy the ride my brother!! No pun intended. Haha ❤️🙃

    I have been watching your videos on Instagram and just found you on UA-cam. Your way of thinking is the biggest lesson of this video. Stay out of your own way and do what works without hurting yourself. You play amazing as well. I play everything matched grip and never questioned using traditional grip. Not that i think one is better than the other but thats the way i started playing. Great video and concept. I wish you continued success!

    • @dylanbaldwin7934

      I wonder if he can do all of what he just did matched? Is it easier for jazz. I'm in my school jazz band I love it but I play matches I'm not sure of the benefits of traditional. My band director says the reason it's still used today is just because it looks cool. My soul is mainly in rock though I'd like to have the capability of playing low volume and having g the control to play jazz because i also really love that style and i think it will better me as a musician and will help in my normal playing which is usually classic rock single bass drumming.

    Thanks for the trad grip descriptions and demonstrations. This kind of content is hard to find, and it is like gold for other trad grips practitioners (like me). Like you describe, I often resort to just experimenting with what is possible, inventing exercises to develop the technique, and then seeing if I can make it work in a musical way. Thanks again!

    My drum teacher taught me traditional grip when I was 15. He also taught me to made use of the pointer and middle finger for added precision and wrist comfort.
    Can't roll nearly as fast as you can single-handedly with your "spider web" technique, gotta teach myself how to do that. My drum teacher had a similar technique to get super fast, but his involved turning the hand upside-down and using the thumb as a fulcrum while tapping the stick super fast and relying on snare bounce.
    Also, similar to what you said, something he told me when I was trying to get it down (it took me between one to two months with weekly lessons to finally "find my grip") was "You'll know when you've found the right grip. The stick will feel natural to your hand. Then you'll arguably never go back because it's more comfortable on the hand than match grip."
    My family sold my acoustic drum set from teenage years without my permission >:(. But my friend recently gave me his old electric set, so I'm looking forward to getting back into the groove. I'm actually kinda stoked because I can play with headphones and not piss off neighbors while having a little more bounce in the drums than the conventional acoustic setup.
    Anyway, point being, your videos have made me excited about drums again. I'm glad to see the craft of Buddy Rich-level technique lives on in the new generation.

    The turning the left hand over to strike the floor Tom, Freddie GRUBER taught that same technique (movement if you will) back in the early early 70s when we were working out of the Joe CUSATIS Book “RHYTHMIC PATTERNS For the modern
    Drummer”! He would Have me do it one hand at a time just quarter notes going between the snare drum and the floor Tom or between the small Tom and the Floor Tom!
    When the left-hand TG was on the snare drum the thumb would be facing up towards the ceiling, then you come up with a slight release in the wrist and turn the hand over as you made an arc or curvature towards the floor Tom when you struck the floor Tom with the tip of the stick the backside of your hand or the “knuckle side” would be facing upward towards the ceiling” the THUMB would be roughly facing your stomach, then you come back over to the snare drum And turn the hand back over from the wrist of course in the same ARC or semi circle until we’re back on the Snare drum! With the thumb back on top facing the ceiling then repeat the Movement, always describing an ARC between the snare drum of the small Tom no matter which direction you’re traveling
    The same principles apply to the right hand grip, when on the snare drum back of the hand or knuckle side faces up towards the ceiling, Come up in a wrist release make an ark come over to the floor Tom strike the floor time with the “THUMB” facing up towards the ceiling And then return to the snare drum making the same arc and now the knuckles are back on top facing up and do this over &over! Then try the same techniques with eighth notes, Eighth note triplets Etc.....Then you can try alternating the hands with single strokes etc. very interesting! By the way I love your single strokes very clean and fast! Perfect! Buddy like!
    BTW: Check out Israeli Drum phenom.
    YONI MADAR......”AMAZING”!

      The standard is so high today, the bar is set so high! But Virgil being 62 or Or 63! unbelievable! I remember when he first burst out on the scene he’s just a kid and It didn’t seem that long ago! My how time flies doesn’t it? anyway take care

    • @nealsausen4651
      @nealsausen4651 3 роки тому

      @Drummer J.L.H. ; Thanks for your reply very interesting I enjoyed reading it yes Virgil is in his own universe so to speak! It’s funny that you should mention Don Ellis; in the mid 70s when I was studying with Freddy every week I had the lesson Slot right after don’s! Don Ellis was also Studying with Freddy as you know, Sometimes Fred would have me show don what we were working on and don seem to like my technique and he Asked me To come down to his studio, Office, Workshop, and try out for that rehearsal or “farming band” as we used to call it were they would train people to eventually come into his band full-time! And While I was flattered by Don‘s invitation, I was still too very inhibited by all that odd-time stuff so I politely thanked him and declined and I never went down there! I just wasn’t ready for that kind of intensity and while I’m a little bit better with odd times now I don’t know! And while I did go down to Don’s office on TUJUNGA In North Hollywood where it was located
      I think I went down there Once to buy a book and a record that he had out on ODD TIMES But That was possibly the only time!
      By the way how was your experience hanging out at GRUBER’s house that day comment back and let me know what you thought of it I’ll be very curious! Stay well!....! Neal

      @nealsausen4651 3 роки тому

      @Drummer J.L.H. : Dear J.L.H.,
      Thank you so much for that Fascinating comment and recollections!
      Yeah I remember seeing that white Board with the note saying “Call Louis Bellson”!
      That’s great! I haven’t thought about that for years but yes you’re right it was in his drum room for years every week when I came for my lesson I would see that I think I might’ve even asked him about it that’s incredible that you remember that yeah a few of Freddy students we’ve talked about that whiteboard with a Louis Bellson note but I must admit I hadn’t thought about that for years but you’re absolutely right about that! Tell me I am a bit curious as to why you had to bring your drum set to Freddys house ( iPhone spelling I’m too lazy to change it)! LOL!
      Fred of course had his own drum set set up at all times for the students to play on! it was either a little mahogany Ludwig down Beat outfit or later on he had a DW blonde Maplewood set set up in his room did he actually tell you or make you bring your own drum set?! that’s really bizarre! you shouldn’t of had to do that unless of course you wanted to that’s another story? Now the students DID have the option of bringing their own bass drum pedal to the lessons or use his Camco, I opted to bring my own pedal most of the time because it was obviously more comfortable for me but sometimes I would use the CAMCO there and it was a nice little pedal Camcos always are if they’re maintained well! But I am curious as to why you had to bring your own drums?!.... do you have the Don Ellis book “NEW RHYTHMS”?! It came with an accompanying LP of the book! Don had each one of his rhythm section guys write a chapter Ralph Humphries wrote a chapter on ODD TIMES, His bass player wrote a Chapter on bass lines in odd times and I think Mlcho Leviev ( Apologize to Mlcho for butchering his name)!
      I actually got to know Milcho and hang out with him because he was the keyboard player with Les De Merle’s transfusion band In 1972 nice guy! Les is another story! Oh boy! I got some les stories I could lay on you I was kind of like his student Lackey But he taught me a lot I really learned a lot of practical stuff from him and I would combine that with Fred’s technical shit! 1972/73 was a very productive Time For me! I know about the Caprice lounge in fact I have some old downbeat Magazines from the late 50s that have little ads for it in the back of the issue or magazine and it mentions Freddy evidently he was the leader/organizer of the house band there, he told me some stories about the days at the caprice basically he would play the first set and then he would disappear and have one of his students Or whoever else Who happened to be available, play the rest of the night while he made it out to the parking lot to meet his connection Or screw some chick in the backseat of a car! What a character Freddie was! Now that’s a “REAL” musician For ya! LOL!
      I did find one LP with Freddy on it when I was living in Japan I would frequent these record stores which were great over there they have all these international imports from other countries jazz and everything and I found an album on a small British indie label I believe it’s called spotlight the label I mean And the name of the album is the “band that never was”
      You can see the young Freddy GRUBER’S picture on the back cover sitting behind the drum set with a big band it was a rehearsal band at the Nichola studios in New York and even Charlie Parker plays on some cuts of course I bought up all the copies I could find and I kept one and gave some to my friends but the label is spotlight records out of England in the name of the album is the band it never was unfortunately I could never find a CD format only vinyl which of course I’m grateful I have anyway thank you for your excellent recollections please keep in touch and by the way where are you located are you still in SoCal?! I myself I am in Akron Ohio! But I do make it out to LA every so often maybe we could meet and talk keep in touch take care Drum on!..... NEAL!

    "The biggest thing to learn from this - don't overthink it. I've never been the person who's like 'oh I'm using Moeller, oh I'm using fingers, oh I'm using French', I threw out the names many years ago, they're amazing but - I just play the drums. That's it. I just hit this, I have fun, I play musical, I play drums."

    I'm going to learn metal stuff and blast beat stuff and double bass stuff. And I'm going to do it all in traditional grip cuz I've never seen a metal drummer use trad grip. I'm also gonna do jazz stuff too

    What ever technique(s) get you to play your best. Who cares how you get there or what they are.
    The most you should care about is if it protects your wrists etc so you can keep playing whatever instrument into your old age.
