"...but I just play the drums, that's it, I just hit this, I play musical, I play drums"..... So great, so humble, what Greyson says makes a lot of sense.... This guy is so good!
It is proof, in my experience. Every show I've played and put over-thinking to the side, was always a fluid set. Have fun and explore when you have some free time alone.
Having seen Buddy Rich in person, I think i can safely say that you are an incredible talent and the closest drummer to Buddy I have ever seen. Keep up the great work!
This kid is seriously no joke. It's been a long time since I've seen a new guy that comes along and really shakes things up. I'm excited to see where this goes. Keep rockin', bud. You're alright...
Yeah, this guy gets it. Clean. Pure. Talented. Humble. Chops. Percussionist. Musician. Musicianship. Artist. The “artistry” is gonna be off the charts in the years to come. Drums can be mesmerizing, & it’s fun & cool to watch the guys who can shred. Cheers!, & .... ‘git some!
Traditional left-hand grip has always fascinated me, and so few drummers use it anymore. Thanks for keeping it alive and explaining it so well. You are a prodigious musician and you are going places. I look forward to following your career.
So insightful for any musician let alone (especially) drummers, feeling out what feels right > prescribed fundaments or forms. I can see immediately the relaxation/overall distribution of tension in the hand/wrist in your technique Vs. “wristing” it, and you can see the benefits of this. In singing, I can get caught up on placement and form which distracts from what feels right also, so it’s a great reminder to strike the right balance and not close off possibilities that feel good for your person/instrument in the song/performance. Very inspiring, thanks for the wisdom!
Everyone who plays traditional grip has issues they have to manage. It's almost a full time job! Bravo to you for keeping the faith. I gave been playing for 50 years and am tweeking my left hand from time to time. Joe Morello would say, move to release the tension.
Great lesson. I'm a guitar player but I'm always fascinated with great left hand technique with drummers like Billy Kreutzman, Joe Morello and others. Great job.
"The biggest thing to learn from this - don't overthink it. I've never been the person who's like 'oh I'm using Moeller, oh I'm using fingers, oh I'm using French', I threw out the names many years ago, they're amazing but - I just play the drums. That's it. I just hit this, I have fun, I play musical, I play drums."
Reuben Spyker and you are keeping the tradition and legacy of the traditional grip for the new generation. Thank you for that. Many say it is a matter of the past and its use makes no sense, but I think more and more will choose it because of you.
Been waiting on a video like this from you for a long ass time now, my man lol. You killed it here, and I am looking forward to hopefully more vids like these from you! Just hearing you describe your own thoughts that pop into your head as you're playing is so valuable to all musicians on instruments. I'm mainly a lead guitarist, but I started out on drums (which I can still do a decent job of playing them now), and your playing and techniques absolutely blew me away just as soon as _I_ first discovered you on IG when your posts kept popping up in my ecplore page. You're by far my favorite drummer on IG right now, and it really feels like there is no parallel competitor in your age and stature right now. Seriously, you have the makings of becoming one of the greatest drummers ever out there, and you're definitely on the right track to getting to that level. Your verbal techniques can also be applied to other instruments very successfully; i.e. "don't overthink it," etc. Man, you got _IT_ . Glad to see you pursuing and living out your dreams and doing what you love to do. Keep up the great work, man!!
Loved hearing your creativity solo just on snare. then on the set! Appreciate your generosity in sharing your special skills-may I add Yoni Madar, Reuben Spryker to the discussion -thanks for the video-shows so much..
Hi Grayson. I've commented on some of your videos before. Just keep doing what you do best. That is playing drums playing music and having fun!! Keep your core skills together at all times if you can. One of my teachers, the great Gary Chester, said to me what is true to your heart will always stay true to your heart. He also said be a human being first and a musician / drummer second!! Enjoy the ride my brother!! No pun intended. Haha ❤️🙃
Great video! Excellent job of explaining the details of what you do, and even what you omit. I got locked into a very rigid traditional grip when I first started playing at 16 many years ago, and my left hand never developed into what it needed to be, so I gave up in frustration thinking that was the only ‘correct’ way to do it, and I must just be lousy at it. Have just played match grip all these years, but because of UA-cam, I’m finally at point my life where I can circle back and figure out how to make this mine and go forward. I’ve already picked up some great tips from you and others, all of which was never addressed when I was 16.
breaking the concept of speed down to the idea of a gear change really helped me conceptualize the mechanical changes needed as you speed up. I guess I thought of speed before as more of a CV style transmission instead of just shifting gears
I have been watching your videos on Instagram and just found you on UA-cam. Your way of thinking is the biggest lesson of this video. Stay out of your own way and do what works without hurting yourself. You play amazing as well. I play everything matched grip and never questioned using traditional grip. Not that i think one is better than the other but thats the way i started playing. Great video and concept. I wish you continued success!
I wonder if he can do all of what he just did matched? Is it easier for jazz. I'm in my school jazz band I love it but I play matches I'm not sure of the benefits of traditional. My band director says the reason it's still used today is just because it looks cool. My soul is mainly in rock though I'd like to have the capability of playing low volume and having g the control to play jazz because i also really love that style and i think it will better me as a musician and will help in my normal playing which is usually classic rock single bass drumming.
Thanks for the trad grip descriptions and demonstrations. This kind of content is hard to find, and it is like gold for other trad grips practitioners (like me). Like you describe, I often resort to just experimenting with what is possible, inventing exercises to develop the technique, and then seeing if I can make it work in a musical way. Thanks again!
My drum teacher taught me traditional grip when I was 15. He also taught me to made use of the pointer and middle finger for added precision and wrist comfort. Can't roll nearly as fast as you can single-handedly with your "spider web" technique, gotta teach myself how to do that. My drum teacher had a similar technique to get super fast, but his involved turning the hand upside-down and using the thumb as a fulcrum while tapping the stick super fast and relying on snare bounce. Also, similar to what you said, something he told me when I was trying to get it down (it took me between one to two months with weekly lessons to finally "find my grip") was "You'll know when you've found the right grip. The stick will feel natural to your hand. Then you'll arguably never go back because it's more comfortable on the hand than match grip." My family sold my acoustic drum set from teenage years without my permission >:(. But my friend recently gave me his old electric set, so I'm looking forward to getting back into the groove. I'm actually kinda stoked because I can play with headphones and not piss off neighbors while having a little more bounce in the drums than the conventional acoustic setup. Anyway, point being, your videos have made me excited about drums again. I'm glad to see the craft of Buddy Rich-level technique lives on in the new generation.
Joy stick! (Head slap). That's my problem - never been a gamer. 😊. Seriously, gonna try this stuff. Love watching. And getting props from SCopeland had to be sweet. Much deserved.
Great video Greyson , everyone's hands are dufferent , it's a matter of finding out what works for you. All techniques require time put into them . After 50 yrs Im still wroking on mine !!
Dude what? I’ve seen you use the pointer before and tried it in unison with my thumb i but it didn’t make much sense. Never realized there was alternating going down. And I love how you look at things as “gears” makes so much perfect sense to me
This video was just awesome. Never sent this much on traditional grip. I discovered you seeing your cover of two bass hit. Was insanely impressed. I sometimes get injured because I never learned traditional grip very well. I was close to throwing it out but this gave me the courage to try and fix a few things and keep playing the grip I love.
hello greyson, I've been following you for a while and I really find you very talented I apologize for my bad English but I hope you understand the idea I'm Chilean hehehehe, I like watching your videos and I know I'll never be able to reach your level but I'm going to go back my drum studies with your tutorials at 33 years old, I started following you because you did a cover for jose pasillas which is my reference, I just hope one day you can read this, however, keep going you are a very good indeed wonderful, I hope also that in the future you don't have to care so much about what you say when you explain your techniques hehehe I mean people who only criticize, you are a very good communicator and I understand your explanations very well, go ahead and thank you for your information.
Thanks for making this. I started playing on a cheap electric set and quickly found my left hand couldn't keep up with my right. I'll start experimenting with different grips and techniques.
What ever technique(s) get you to play your best. Who cares how you get there or what they are. The most you should care about is if it protects your wrists etc so you can keep playing whatever instrument into your old age.
I'm going to learn metal stuff and blast beat stuff and double bass stuff. And I'm going to do it all in traditional grip cuz I've never seen a metal drummer use trad grip. I'm also gonna do jazz stuff too
Kind of what Joe Morello did with his left hand. He had about 3 different ways of finger technique for the left hand and would mix them for feel and speed when needed.
I think I remember the video you speak about (about Louis Hayes), it's from drum solo he did the period of time he played with Cannonball Adderley... right? ;)
Ave Maria mano, vc toca pra caralho!
Reminds me of Jojo Mayer in his dvd saying something like, it doesn't matter if it's traditional or match grip, none is better than the other, it's whatever allows to get the sound that you want.
I've also found that it's not as simple as "I play with Moeller technique" or "I play with French grip." It's important to familiarize yourself with every grip because they can all be useful when navigating around a drum set. For example, I pretty much play American grip with my left hand and French grip with my right hand. I also use French grip with both when doing singles, and also American with both when playing on the snare. I'll alternate with American and French on my right hand, depending on if what I'm hitting is to the left or right of me. Like with my right hand, I'd hit rack toms with American grip and the floor tom with French. So, stick technique is often times fluid and versatile.
You already know what your doing and your gonna get better and better as u get older I mean ur excellent now Traditional grip is a grip that’s been dissolving with the newer generation but for me well I play both but mostly traditional I know your a Buddy Rich fan that’s a giving but we stride to be our own And that’s the hard part

Don’t over think. 👍🏻
He’s a Nekrutmancer, a magician that brings the great drumming of the past back to life again.
Absolute best thing he says is … throw out the names and just play the drums.
It is proof, in my experience. Every show I've played and put over-thinking to the side, was always a fluid set. Have fun and explore when you have some free time alone.

Yeah, this guy gets it. Clean. Pure. Talented. Humble. Chops. Percussionist. Musician. Musicianship. Artist. The “artistry” is gonna be off the charts in the years to come.
Drums can be mesmerizing, & it’s fun & cool to watch the guys who can shred.
Cheers!, & .... ‘git some!
"artistry" isn't predetermined.. it requires guts, devotion and a certain willingness - and of course a certain life experiance(s)...
Edit: spelling
Life experience is the crucible that burns away the excess leaving only what's crucial and necessary, strengthening character and vision
So young, with limitless potential. We are witnessing the next great one.
Humble. Well spoken. Down to earth. Absurdly talented.
Remember this kids name. He's just getting started.
Brilliant...grounded and real ....and to think just 18 years old...amazing! What a great role model for young musicians everywhere!

As a matched grip player, this blows my mind and inspires me to explore more open-handed/traditional techniques
The opening statements are so true…..keep workin’, playin’, experimentin’ and select what works for you….
Dude! I don’t even play an instrument and I watch your channel just to enjoy the beats and the education. Well done and thank you !
Best advice ever, "Just play the Drums and have fun"!
I how how you're not a teacher but still putting spirit to teach your style
