  • Mussar is a philosophical and ethical body of Jewish knowledge that dates to the 11th century and has seen a remarkable resurgence over the past 25 years.
Mussar recognizes the Soul as that part of our existence that encompasses all our non-physical characteristics-patience, love, generosity, gratitude, respect etc. These characteristics or traits that we all posses to a greater or lesser degree are called Middah (singular), or Middot (pleural). By studying Jewish and non-Jewish writings new and old, we can examine our behavior using these Middot as a sort of technology to try and improve our behavior; and thus, improve our soul. Mussar can be seen as an academic exercise, a self-help to become a nicer person, an involvement with an ancient Jewish wisdom to improve our soul, or it can even be a way to draw closer to God.
