You're wrong about one part of that, Josh. Ryan Day didn't get serious about making changes after last season & take steps to finally transform his team. It was LONG before that! Once his defense proved inept vs Oregon, (& he knew he had a big problem), in just Stroud's 2nd game l believe, Ryan started taking action then, that season. Does anybody remember when he immediately stripped his new DC Kerry Combs of the play-calling duties?! Years ago, l heard analysts speaking to a grizzled old veteran (l think it was Bill Polian, l love to hear such knowledgeable veterans talk, the elite of the elite!) during a game, about what a coach can do when he realizes one of his hires isnt the man they thought they were. He said there's 2 things you can do. You either make what changes you can & try to compensate to get through the season as best you can, and then let them go. Or you fire them midseason & try to bring in a whole new guy to take over, both are very hard to do, it takes time to completely replace someone. I was like "Whoa! I guess there really is only 2 things you can do, & those other football experts actually didn't know what he fully understood about managing a team!!". Obviously Ryan made what adjustments he could, also having one of the other coaches pitch in, l forget his name & they tried to make adjustments & coach up the defense as best they could. Equally as obvious, he did his homework, identified the top guy that he wanted to work with & spoke to "The Mad Scientist" at the other OSU, in Oklahoma as soon as he was able to. Bringing him on board after the Buckeyes finished the season losing in Ann Arbor (& were out-physicaled by that Aidan Hutchinson led team, when everybody started saying "Ohio State is just too soft) & the subsequent victorious shootout in the Rose Bowl vs Utah. Jim Knowles worked feverishly to install the foundation of an entirely new defensive scheme last season, but it wasn't quite elite yet. This year it is much more evident what Jim Knowles is doing & what a brilliant defensive mind he is, but Ryan took action immediately, handled it, & this has been in the works for years now!

The defense this year is stellar. The offense is more methodical and is focused on limiting mistakes made to give other teams less time to cook against us. Josh is correct with his sledgehammer analogies. We look like a different team because we have to be. We look less flashy but we have to be tougher and be able to bludgeon TTUN to death, outlast them and limit their scoring chances. A lot of people act like Ohio States offense is as bad as Iowa’s lol. Ohio State ranks 14th in the nation in passing offense. Sure, it isn’t a top 5 offense like previous seasons, but it’s also far from a bad offense. Against Penn State, they were missing Treyvon Henderson who is their best running back and Emeka Egbuka their second best receiver, and still had 365 yards of offense vs a very good Penn State defense. They do need to drastically improve in the red zone, but overall, their offense is good enough when paired with that defense.

Saying someone is not overrated just because they wasn’t favored to begin with is a safe way to absolve someone of criticism. Also that BS defensive holding call against Penn State that stripped them of a score changed the game. Within three seconds of the ball being snapped, Penn State's defense knocked it out of the Ohio State's QBs hand. So the hold was irrelevant, it did not affect the play at all. Also there's a hold on every play to be honest. Yes , Penn States offensive could have played better, in a tight close defensive game, but having seven points taking away is huge and swings the momentum the other way.
