  • Today, we are embracing the winter season by finding out if those chilly ice type pokemon are as rare as their reputation claims!
    If you love unique Pokémon challenges as well as uncovering facts about the games you never knew, then you are going to love my channel! I am currently working on the "How fast can you catch X in EVERY Pokémon game" series
    where we track down specific pokemon, types, and other interesting groupings in the most optimal way possible.
    I use a heavy amount of research and analysis in search of the answer to each episode's question, aiming to tell a fun story of the often tedious but exciting adventures I go through along the way!

    Update: A few have caught that you don't actually need surf to make it to fisherman Tully (can go through the mountain). This does mean that time is faster than expected, however I don't believe it changes anything. We already covered the optimal path for that which requires the abra strat and playing with DST settings like we covered in the eevee video if you are interested in learning more though. ;)
    Thanks so much for watching and supporting as always! Really would love to hear what you thought about the updates I made to keep the catching challenge as fresh as I could and what you would like to see next! 😊

      You forgot one important detail there - Lapras can be the fastest one only on Fridays. Making this score invalid for most people, who picked other days. And even if it is chance based - Smoochum is still the fastest Pokemom you can, but may not be lucky enough to get. In my opinion making both of them the fastest option in their own way. One requiring time coordination other save manipulation.

    • @av2279
      @av2279 6 місяців тому +1

      I don't understand why Lapras is the fastest if you can hatch a Smoochum faster than acquiring a Lapras? Yes, it's only 1 or 2 chances at a hatch within ~1hr 10min, but you are looking for "fastest" and not "almost as fast but more consistent," right? Or was this less of a routing exercise and more of a one-time experiment/challenge to see how fast you could obtain an Ice type, even though you know of theoretically faster ones that just didn't pan out during your attempt(s)?

    • @DrakonLameth
      @DrakonLameth 5 місяців тому +2

      @@av2279 Lapras is likely faster because, on average, you'll have gotten Lapras before you have spent an equal amount of time save-scumming for the Odd Egg to be Smoochum; it was mentioned you only had about 2 resets worth of time (if not just 2 hatches) before you'd just be faster getting lapras, and as you only have ~16% shot each time, which means you'll only have about a 40% shot to have gotten it by the time you've done 3 hatches of the egg. It's also why the suggestion for people wanting to reproduce themselves was to grab the egg on the way to the lapras, so you can just go "well, I'm done early" if you get smoochum, and continue on for lapras if not.

    • @av2279
      @av2279 5 місяців тому +1

      @@DrakonLameth I understood all that. I was confused about whether or not the video was a personal one-attempt challenge, or whether it was answering the hypothetical "which is the fastest one a player can get." After watching more videos I see these are their personal results after trying each game once and getting what they get, regardless of whether or not it would have been the fastest someone could theoretically get. In other words, in another scenario they may have ended up with the actual fastest Pokemon, which would be Smoochum, but in this run they did not get lucky and caught Lapras instead, making it their personal winner.
      But by that token, you are not "done early" if you get Smoochum, since Smoochum is the actual goal. It's more of "you are doing the backup" by going to get Lapras, if not.

    Love these videos! I noticed 2 things here that might be of interest:
    1: The grunts blocking Mt Coronet aren't there in Diamond & Pearl, only in Platinum. As a kid I made it all the way to Snowpoint and was stuck for ages there because I never triggeres the Canalave library event. Not sure if that'd make it faster though considering D&P run slower than Platinum.
    2: You could technically obtain Glaceon in Legends Arceus before ever making it to the Crimson Mirelands. I do think it would take quite a bit longer to obtain the ice stone than just doing the speedrun strats though.

    • @semaJCh
      @semaJCh  6 місяців тому +17

      Thank you and glad you are enjoying the videos! The diamond/pearl thing is so funny thank you. I love that there was a solution in the base games after trying so many things in platinum to see if it would change. 🤣
      And totally agree on glaceon, it can be done but I am fairly sure it is slower than the options here (but there could be a trick I am not privy too)!

    I hate how rare and late game Ice-types tend to be. Its among my favorite types and every new generation I want to try and use a new one on my team, but 90% of the time I already have a full team by the time I even see an Ice-type and I usually don't want to give up an established team member.
    Give us an early snow route with some nice ice types for once, GameFreak! It doesn't even really make sense that its always a late game environment since ice types themselves are hardly that amazing. Its not like the type is so good that it needs to be a late game type for balance reasons.

    • @jaernihiltheus7817
      @jaernihiltheus7817 4 місяці тому

      I do like that ice types are mostly mid-late game, but i wish they would at least give 1 ice type option within the 1st two gyms, then trickle the others out over time.

Pignote is also in the middle tier while Herdoer is in the fastest entry tier, but the difference isn't as significant (probably). I've caught Shellder behind Nemona's house.
    It's exceedingly rare, and you have to rely on the Shellder even getting close enough, but You can absolutely catch it.
    There's a spot in the furthest back portion of her back yard. Think of if you're trying to get to the spot where you meet the bike lizard, that little cove, from Nemona's beach. The beach shrinks to a narrow strip on the East end, and if you edge to the furthest point of it, pokemon spawn in like Finizen and Shellder and Wattrel.
    You get access to mid game mons and mid to low lvl10s as soon as you go through the catching tutorial.
