The Northwest Passage is going to become more navigable by ships and will bring unprecedented levels of trade from the world to this country, and there are metric fuck tons of oil, gas and other resources thought to be in our EEZ in the Arctic. This trade route will revolutionize trade between the Eastern and Western hemispheres and will drastically shorten the distance needed to sail between these two regions, and the Russians are right across from it with operating military bases in the Arctic region. The Canadian military needs to start retooling, modernizing, and increasing the size of our military to defend our sovereign territories in the Arctic from any aggressor.
Harper planned to get Assault ships similar to the America Class (not super carrier like the Nimitz and Ford class) but something that can carry helicopters and V/STOL aircraft. The Liberals constantly referred to them as "Aircraft Carriers" to scare the public. We were supposed to replace our Sea Hawks 30 years ago - but Cretien cancelled them on a whim as part of a campaign promise which cost Canada a number of lives and untold millions to cancel contracts and losses in manufacturing as part of the new helicopters were to built here. Justine did the exact same thing with the F-35, cancelling a project we'd invested heavily in along with much of the free world on and election whim. They're now looking at possibly purchasing them anyway at far greater cost because of his knee JERK election promise (the ONLY one he kept). You want a stronger military? Quit voting Liberal!
Considering how small the CAF is compared to our population, you'd think that we'd have some of the most cutting edge equipment available. The only reason I can think why this isn't the case is successive governments haven't taken us seriously at all. We keep doing more with less and somehow making it all work...because that's just the culture...get it done. We're now at the point where nearly everything needs replacement or overhaul, rather than maintaining over decades with thoughtful and reasonable kit service life. Also, massive injection of money alone won't solve everything. It will take a huge mindset and rationale shift to make the CAF a self sustaining fighting force that doesn't need to rely heavily on other nations for support.
It's like that in a lot of western countries at the moment, the rising budgets for NATO defense are great but it's still going to take years to put that money to good use
Why waste money on unproven "cutting edge" equipment that is expensive and hard to maintain when you can just retrofit proven equipment. Sure buy jets ships and tanks , everything else should be locally produced and improved to meet our needs for our land.

Well Canada was never a primary target for the Soviet Union. No point using expensive nukes on us, just our neighbour to the south. And now we know the Red Army isn't that big a threat and the Russians don't have an Armada to invade with.
I served in the late 80's. The equipment we have today is way better than it was back then. I do think the Brigade Groups were more capable though. They were TOW heavy, and had self propelled artillery. We even had Blowpipe for anti aircraft use. What we have now is good for wars like Afghanistan, but we are sorely lacking for anything like the Ukraine.

The Ukraine invasion served as a wake up call for all of NATO members. I believe every one of them, including Canada, will dramatically increase their military spending in the years to come. I wouldn’t be surprised if our military doubled, or even tripled in size in the next 20 years, as old and emerging world powers attempt to shuffle the Status quo that existed since the end of the Cold War.
After the Liberal purchase of used British Subs( circa 2000) the staying was that these repair intensive subs spentt more time above ground than the Sea King helicopters

All of the Leopard 2A4 should be upgraded to 2A4M standard with L55 guns. We should've still kept those Leopard 1C2 in our inventory as infantry support vehicles. Our force is too tiny for any real impact on keeping the world safe.
if theyre going to upgrade anything on the A4M it should be the Engine, Transmission, and torsion bars. the power pack cant support the extra weight. making the leo useless
We aren't responsible for keeping the world safe. The biggest impact we can make geopolitically is with economic power. Any humanitarian cause we would assist with NATO or the UN would likely only require air-power, not a full land invasion.
I drove a TAPV for 3 years in the Canadian Armed forces with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and took part of Operation Lentus and Op. Laser. My unit was sent to Latvia when my contract ended. Procurement for the armed forces is the worst. A TPAV is a multi million dollar vehicle and most of the doors would fail or straight up not even work. Also they built a new facility for us which they only found out @ 90% completion that it couldn't house our entire unit which was its purpose.
Best thing I did is leave the CAF, budget only been going down even tho the government says otherwise. Troop morale is really low, staffing is really low and work per employee is over 400%. Pays are really low too, overtime is not paid for and alot of it is done. Troops are not allowed to really choose where they want to live and for how long, ending in alot of divorces and suicides.
Yes all the leopard 2A4 should have been upgraded several times. Even the A6 should have been upgraded. Some of the 1c2 chassis could have been used. Our government NEVER wants to spend on the military so we should be like Israel & use, upgrade, rebuild enhance some of our equipment instead of just scraping.
That's our plan so far with Subs, Fighters and Frigates etc until replacement. Unless we are entering a period of war or instability. It's probably the right choice, I'd rather have our better quality of life than a massive bill from the military.

@@sharpy3453 As I understand it Canada purchased 120 leopards broken down into approximately 100 2a4s & 20 leopard 6s. So we bought lots of training tanks & relatively few combat tanks. Do the Americans buy 2 sets of tanks, one for training & one for combat. I suggest we buy all combat tanks and replace those that are worn out or uneconomical to fix as they are needed but then I would want a lot more. Seems I would get more bang for my buck than wasting billions on farmacare & day care etc.

I am a proud Canadian who fully supports our military, and wishes we could increase it's capability. My suggestion regarding this video is if you want to impart a more impactful message to Canadians regarding our military then get a narrator than can instil a more emotional vibe and message that motivates them... food for thought.

I understand the Harry De Wolf Vessels to be more useful for their presence. We can't claim the territory if we can't reach the areas. Fighters would likely do a great deal of the strikes if we had real issue up there.
I'm Australian. We're building Type 26's now, along with a new Fleet of PT boats that will go as far as Antarctica. We're using the same design Jordan & Brunei are using for the PT boats, but without the Anti-Ship missiles or Sonar Capabilities that the other Navies have. Why build it in place when you can pay a contractor to do it later at 3 times the price? I think we're learning too much from the USA...
Let's not kid ourselves, our ships are NOT EVER going to be engaging Russian warships and if they are, we have far larger issues like nuclear war to worry about. Besides, as Frontline Pros said, our 40 year old F-18s are more than capable of dealing with any actual issues up north. Russia as we have recently seen, is barely able to invade their neighbors less than 140 km from the nearest railway. Our procurement system is so broken that massive amounts of money will be frittered away before we even make a decision on what equipment to buy. Then, we will pick an item that is state of the art and ask to remove everything that makes it state of the art to save money, try to field it for 10 years an when it rolls out it will break in a week.
It's a feature: You can clain you give Defense a huge budget, but Defense can't spend it because the Federal government (i.e. another department) makes it impossible to spend money. 10 years to find a pistol replacement and poof! A judge decides to send it back to squarre one.
For a defense oriented air force like the RCAF, I feel the SAAB Grippen-E is better suited than the Lockheed Martin F-35, with radar tech constantly advancing, we don't know long aircraft designed to be stealthy will actually stay stealthy. Not to mention that with the F-35, unless you're ready to sacrifice that built in stealth, you won't be using the six weapon hard points under the wings and be restricted to the two internal weapon bays. The Grippen-E has better range without external fuel tanks, it's more agile at subsonic speeds, and cheaper per unit and lower operating cost. Not to mention SAAB already verbally agreed to build at least two production facilities in the Montréal area, adding to our national industry.
Our industry is already producing parts & doing research for the F 35 & the facilities are in other parts of Canada not just Quebec. The Grippen will be just a make work project for Quebec.

The F35 have more capabilities than what you mentioned. It can do EW, SEAD, command and control ammunitions fired from other aircraft just like alley oop in basketball with digital link connectivity.
Canada is a member of NATO and may be called upon to defend another member state. If Canada's idea of it's airforce is just air patrol and interdiction, then the old F18 is good enough to fly side by side with Russias clunky bombers. But when the shooting war begins, those 4th gen aircraft will be ineffective against new SAMs and LR missiles. Trust the professionals to make the choice and not the pundits and politicians. Israel, US Germany, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Finland, Denmrk, Japan, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, air forces cannot be all wrong.
The Gripen is so good that Sweden signed up for the Tempest program. That tells you all you need to know about the future capability of that aircraft. Read your defence policy: Canada's air force is expeditionary, with NATO missions to fulfill. We need a fighter for the next 50 years, not the previous 50.

I think that both the F-35 and JAS-39 are neat planes, and either would be great. On one hand, you get a nimble multirole that’s much easier on the RCAFs wallet, and on the other, some funky fresh stealth and sensor tech built around network-centric warfare.

We are WAY safer NOT having priority targets like nuclear silos/launchers in our country. If you're meaning like Surface-air missile batteries up north, fine that's ok I guess, but the upkeep costs would be ridiculous and unnecessary when a couple of 40-year-old F-18s are regularly all we need to repel Russian probing flights. At worst, I'd like to see an early warning system installed in Canada like before, but how about we try to AVOID the cold war 2 before investing billions into it rather than infrastructure/healthcare/education etc etc etc.

Single engine F16's from 148t Fighter Wing have been patrolling in arctic as part of NORAD for some time now. New technology also sees advancement in reliability, which makes the dual engine redundancy a moot point.
Canada needs to up spending to 2% GDP agreed upon in 2006,. At that time NATO Defence Ministers agreed to commit a minimum of 2% of their Gross Domestic Product to defense spending. Canada has not come close......1.4% is not close. We need to up out game by a lot.

The 88 F-35's only replaces those CF-18's that are still flying and doesn't come very close to the original order of the 138 planes we bought in the 80's. We need to up our military spending to a minimum 2% of our GDP, which we are not even close to approaching. We have half the planes that Ukraine had at the start of the war. For our country that has so much territory and has a concerning arctic problem with Russia already, we need to get our collective heads out of our asses and start acting like the big boy country we always say we are.
@@tauron1 we spend 0.8% on the coast guard. Many countries their coast guards are part of their military.. I think there is a lot of variables involved. But I said "we're seeing a major swing" I didn't say we were reaching 2% . I posted on Twitter our need for about 40 attack helos, the LAV 6.0s upgrade. And the 15 type 26 frigates with what will be the largest fleet in the world. Add to that 80 F35s and a large project new coast guard ships. I like to see the Coast Guard armed in the arctic and at least that part of it military.

@@jasonsmith8567 the offshore patrol vessels are lightly armed, definitely not a warship. They should be armed like the high endurance cutters the U.S coast guard uses. A minimum 76mm deck gun, a small RAM launcher etc. The 15 ships, basically replaces the 12 Halifax class Frigates and 4 Tribal class Destroyers. We also need Littoral capability of which we currently have none. We need to double (at least) our combat aircraft complement with a squadron deployed permanently in the North, either in Iqaluit or Inuvik, which both has well developed full service airports. Inuvik being on the mainland makes it an easier location to service.

So if bombs ever touched North America I’m joining the army and going wherever because distant relatives of mine did the same. So I could have the life I have now and take advantage of sometimes. Canada is just a brother, not particularly big. Part of the reason is Australians live in a much more dangerous part of the world. It is also true that while still more than Canada's earlier on, Australia's defense budget only recently was greatly increased. Although not a huge factor Australia does not maintain a separate Coast Guard, with much of its duties carried out by its armed forces. Canada's Coast Guard has 119 ships ranging from 23,000-ton vessels to much smaller ships.

We do live in a more dangerous part of the world, but everyone now is realising that even now security is not ensured. The F-35 is an ultra-modern fifth generation stealth fighter more than able to survive a modern high intensity conflict. The Grippen is a decades old forth generation non-stealth fighter, already obsolete and utterly unable to fight a peer adverasy without massive losses. Therefor the Canadian Parliment will almost certainly go with the Grippen.
@Phil Campbell NO FIGHTER on the planet could fly across Canada without being fueled MANY Times, reality! The F35 will mop the floor with the Gripen. I've seen it and done it myself in a CF-18 at Frisian Flag. I've also done mock against F35s in Yuma, AZ, that didn't go so well.

As a nation, we need to speed up our replacement and replenishment of materials, equipment and mostly, Personnel. The world won't wait for Canadian politicians to step up to the plate, especially since they are notorious bench sitters that rely on other players to carry the team.

Ex navy. The men and women serving are great. Their equipment is outdated and in poor supply. Gen Rick Hillier wanted a complete overhaul of the procurement process. The Amoeba knows nothing about a military so such an overhaul is unlikely. As the MND said, the cupboard is bare

If I ran military procurement, would drop 3 CSC, and purchase 2 Juan Carlos Amphibious Assault Ships c/w 40 F35-B Strike Fighters for expeditionary operations. For Continental defense, would build in Canada 50 Gripen E ‘Arrows’. This alone IMHO would only be incrementally more money, but increase capabilities significantly. Then I would start modernizing the submarine fleet, purchase mobile air defense, and a small fleet of marine attack helicopters. 😁

We keep doing more with less and somehow making it all work...because that's just the culture...get it done.
We're now at the point where nearly everything needs replacement or overhaul, rather than maintaining over decades with thoughtful and reasonable kit service life. Also, massive injection of money alone won't solve everything. It will take a huge mindset and rationale shift to make the CAF a self sustaining fighting force that doesn't need to rely heavily on other nations for support.
It's like that in a lot of western countries at the moment, the rising budgets for NATO defense are great but it's still going to take years to put that money to good use
Why waste money on unproven "cutting edge" equipment that is expensive and hard to maintain when you can just retrofit proven equipment. Sure buy jets ships and tanks , everything else should be locally produced and improved to meet our needs for our land.

Well Canada was never a primary target for the Soviet Union. No point using expensive nukes on us, just our neighbour to the south. And now we know the Red Army isn't that big a threat and the Russians don't have an Armada to invade with.
One of the biggest problems is how procurment works. for example they don't buy off the shelf equipment even if it is really good at a good price
I served in the late 80's. The equipment we have today is way better than it was back then. I do think the Brigade Groups were more capable though. They were TOW heavy, and had self propelled artillery. We even had Blowpipe for anti aircraft use. What we have now is good for wars like Afghanistan, but we are sorely lacking for anything like the Ukraine.

The Ukraine invasion served as a wake up call for all of NATO members. I believe every one of them, including Canada, will dramatically increase their military spending in the years to come.
I wouldn’t be surprised if our military doubled, or even tripled in size in the next 20 years, as old and emerging world powers attempt to shuffle the Status quo that existed since the end of the Cold War.

All of the Leopard 2A4 should be upgraded to 2A4M standard with L55 guns. We should've still kept those Leopard 1C2 in our inventory as infantry support vehicles. Our force is too tiny for any real impact on keeping the world safe.

We aren't responsible for keeping the world safe. The biggest impact we can make geopolitically is with economic power. Any humanitarian cause we would assist with NATO or the UN would likely only require air-power, not a full land invasion.

I see the CH-148 flying over my head a lot here in Halifax. I see those ships all the time in port too, I love it here.
I drove a TAPV for 3 years in the Canadian Armed forces with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and took part of Operation Lentus and Op. Laser. My unit was sent to Latvia when my contract ended. Procurement for the armed forces is the worst. A TPAV is a multi million dollar vehicle and most of the doors would fail or straight up not even work. Also they built a new facility for us which they only found out @ 90% completion that it couldn't house our entire unit which was its purpose.

Best thing I did is leave the CAF, budget only been going down even tho the government says otherwise. Troop morale is really low, staffing is really low and work per employee is over 400%. Pays are really low too, overtime is not paid for and alot of it is done. Troops are not allowed to really choose where they want to live and for how long, ending in alot of divorces and suicides.

Yes all the leopard 2A4 should have been upgraded several times. Even the A6 should have been upgraded. Some of the 1c2 chassis could have been used. Our government NEVER wants to spend on the military so we should be like Israel & use, upgrade, rebuild enhance some of our equipment instead of just scraping.
That's our plan so far with Subs, Fighters and Frigates etc until replacement. Unless we are entering a period of war or instability.
It's probably the right choice, I'd rather have our better quality of life than a massive bill from the military.

Do the Americans buy 2 sets of tanks, one for training & one for combat. I suggest we buy all combat tanks and replace those that are worn out or uneconomical to fix as they are needed but then I would want a lot more. Seems I would get more bang for my buck than wasting billions on farmacare & day care etc.

I'm Australian. We're building Type 26's now, along with a new Fleet of PT boats that will go as far as Antarctica. We're using the same design Jordan & Brunei are using for the PT boats, but without the Anti-Ship missiles or Sonar Capabilities that the other Navies have. Why build it in place when you can pay a contractor to do it later at 3 times the price? I think we're learning too much from the USA...

Let's not kid ourselves, our ships are NOT EVER going to be engaging Russian warships and if they are, we have far larger issues like nuclear war to worry about. Besides, as Frontline Pros said, our 40 year old F-18s are more than capable of dealing with any actual issues up north. Russia as we have recently seen, is barely able to invade their neighbors less than 140 km from the nearest railway. What fucking chance do we think they have of meaningfully invading the North-west territories or the Yukon across the Bearing strait and past Alaska lol. Canada is scrounging the scrap heap for fighter jets. After getting Australia's used F18, i heard they are close to a deal with Zimbabwe air force.
Considering how well Ukraines 40 year old MIGs are performing against Russia’s generation five SU-35 fighter jets it probably doesn’t matter. Upgrading old jets and keeping them in service is clearly worthwhile.

Our procurement system is so broken that massive amounts of money will be frittered away before we even make a decision on what equipment to buy. Then, we will pick an item that is state of the art and ask to remove everything that makes it state of the art to save money, try to field it for 10 years an when it rolls out it will break in a week.
It's a feature: You can clain you give Defense a huge budget, but Defense can't spend it because the Federal government (i.e. another department) makes it impossible to spend money. 10 years to find a pistol replacement and poof! A judge decides to send it back to squarre one.

For a defense oriented air force like the RCAF, I feel the SAAB Grippen-E is better suited than the Lockheed Martin F-35, with radar tech constantly advancing, we don't know long aircraft designed to be stealthy will actually stay stealthy. Not to mention that with the F-35, unless you're ready to sacrifice that built in stealth, you won't be using the six weapon hard points under the wings and be restricted to the two internal weapon bays. The Grippen-E has better range without external fuel tanks, it's more agile at subsonic speeds, and cheaper per unit and lower operating cost. Not to mention SAAB already verbally agreed to build at least two production facilities in the Montréal area, adding to our national industry.
Our industry is already producing parts & doing research for the F 35 & the facilities are in other parts of Canada not just Quebec. The Grippen will be just a make work project for Quebec.

The F35 have more capabilities than what you mentioned. It can do EW, SEAD, command and control ammunitions fired from other aircraft just like alley oop in basketball with digital link connectivity.
Canada is a member of NATO and may be called upon to defend another member state. If Canada's idea of it's airforce is just air patrol and interdiction, then the old F18 is good enough to fly side by side with Russias clunky bombers. But when the shooting war begins, those 4th gen aircraft will be ineffective against new SAMs and LR missiles. Trust the professionals to make the choice and not the pundits and politicians. Israel, US Germany, UK, Australia, Netherlands, Finland, Denmrk, Japan, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, air forces cannot be all wrong.
The Gripen is so good that Sweden signed up for the Tempest program. That tells you all you need to know about the future capability of that aircraft. Read your defence policy: Canada's air force is expeditionary, with NATO missions to fulfill. We need a fighter for the next 50 years, not the previous 50.

I think that both the F-35 and JAS-39 are neat planes, and either would be great. On one hand, you get a nimble multirole that’s much easier on the RCAFs wallet, and on the other, some funky fresh stealth and sensor tech built around network-centric warfare.

Single engine F16's from 148t Fighter Wing have been patrolling in arctic as part of NORAD for some time now. New technology also sees advancement in reliability, which makes the dual engine redundancy a moot point.

Canada needs to up spending to 2% GDP agreed upon in 2006,. At that time NATO Defence Ministers agreed to commit a minimum of 2% of their Gross Domestic Product to defense spending. Canada has not come close......1.4% is not close. We need to up out game by a lot.
With purchase of 88 F35s and new navy vessels being built.. I think we're seeing a major swing now.
@@jasonsmith8567 , It's all smoke and mirrors as these Navy vessel were previously announced and we are not even going to see them for a least another decade. The 88 F-35's only replaces those CF-18's that are still flying and doesn't come very close to the original order of the 138 planes we bought in the 80's. We need to up our military spending to a minimum 2% of our GDP, which we are not even close to approaching. We have half the planes that Ukraine had at the start of the war. For our country that has so much territory and has a concerning arctic problem with Russia already, we need to get our collective heads out of our asses and start acting like the big boy country we always say we are.
@@tauron1 we spend 0.8% on the coast guard. Many countries their coast guards are part of their military.. I think there is a lot of variables involved. But I said "we're seeing a major swing" I didn't say we were reaching 2% . I posted on Twitter our need for about 40 attack helos, the LAV 6.0s upgrade. And the 15 type 26 frigates with what will be the largest fleet in the world. Add to that 80 F35s and a large project new coast guard ships. I like to see the Coast Guard armed in the arctic and at least that part of it military.

@@jasonsmith8567 the offshore patrol vessels are lightly armed, definitely not a warship. They should be armed like the high endurance cutters the U.S coast guard uses. A minimum 76mm deck gun, a small RAM launcher etc. The 15 ships, basically replaces the 12 Halifax class Frigates and 4 Tribal class Destroyers. We also need Littoral capability of which we currently have none. We need to double (at least) our combat aircraft complement with a squadron deployed permanently in the North, either in Iqaluit or Inuvik, which both has well developed full service airports. Inuvik being on the mainland makes it an easier location to service.

Canada is just a brother, not particularly big. Part of the reason is Australians live in a much more dangerous part of the world. It is also true that while still more than Canada's earlier on, Australia's defense budget only recently was greatly increased. Although not a huge factor Australia does not maintain a separate Coast Guard, with much of its duties carried out by its armed forces. Canada's Coast Guard has 119 ships ranging from 23,000-ton vessels to much smaller ships.

The F-35 is an ultra-modern fifth generation stealth fighter more than able to survive a modern high intensity conflict. The Grippen is a decades old forth generation non-stealth fighter, already obsolete and utterly unable to fight a peer adverasy without massive losses. Therefor the Canadian Parliment will almost certainly go with the Grippen.
@Phil Campbell NO FIGHTER on the planet could fly across Canada without being fueled MANY Times, reality! The F35 will mop the floor with the Gripen. I've seen it and done it myself in a CF-18 at Frisian Flag. I've also done mock against F35s in Yuma, AZ, that didn't go so well.

For god sake as a veteran of Afghanistan, please be honest our Griffin helicopter is as effective as a Cessna is in being a fighter jet .hslf of our equipment is worn out. Till our politicians are as accountable as we are its a sad insult for our fallen brothers and sisters..

Ex navy. The men and women serving are great. Their equipment is outdated and in poor supply. Gen Rick Hillier wanted a complete overhaul of the procurement process. The Amoeba knows nothing about a military so such an overhaul is unlikely. As the MND said, the cupboard is bare

Canadians take their security completely for granted. They have no idea how much work goes down in the background to keep Canadians safe everyday. Sad to see the CAF so neglected.

If I ran military procurement, would drop 3 CSC, and purchase 2 Juan Carlos Amphibious Assault Ships c/w 40 F35-B Strike Fighters for expeditionary operations. For Continental defense, would build in Canada 50 Gripen E ‘Arrows’. This alone IMHO would only be incrementally more money, but increase capabilities significantly. Then I would start modernizing the submarine fleet, purchase mobile air defense, and a small fleet of marine attack helicopters. 😁

too much politics involved in the F-35 and gripen. I think we will get F-35 personally as we are close allies and will be in the long run compared to europe
