  • The second edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race cemented the race's place as a fixture and pillar event in the sport of sailing. Dutchman Conny van Rietschoten would claim the race on corrected time in Flyer, a Sparksman and Stephens design that can still be seen sailing today.
Clare Francis became the first woman to skipper a boat in the race and Sir Peter Blake, making his second Whitbread appearance as one of the crew on board Heath's Condor, was forced to make a spectacular man overboard rescue in the Southern Ocean.
15 boats would start the race in Portsmouth and all 15 completed the four-leg, 27,000 nautical mile course.

thank you so much for this footage . As a boatbuilder i worked on the construction of the CONDOR (otherwise known as the grand piano as she was a wooden boat) and also the Teilsa the steel 66 foot maxi racer from North Netherlands. wonderful memories and the best footage I have ever seen of this great race. Long live the Bowman Yachts name where the Condor was built in Emsworth and designed by John Sharp. As for the Teilsa I had so many good memories helping Dirk Nauta the skipper and the crew prepare for the great event, ..Life is an adventure.

I’m so happy to have all of the old Whitbread docs online to watch, I’ve writing a story set in the early Whitbread days and these are so great to have for research!

I first saw this in Wayne Ettle's Costa Mesa, CA shop back about 1979. While I never saw myself as an ocean racer, this film sealed the deal! Cool to hear a young Petah Montgomery and see a young Sir Peter B though! Awesome movie!

Hello, bonjour 😎😉,... i just discovered this vidéo by chance, while looking for a biography, of the prominent Admiral John Steiner, président of the race committee of the Whitbread 1977🌟⚓👨‍✈️.....
Its a fantastic vidéo👍👍🌟🌟... really the best offshore racing vidéo..👏👏🌟🌟..!!!!!!!
Congratulations for this exceptional work...👌👌🌟🌟🎉🥂🍾 !!!!!!
It reminds us of this magnificent périod, when the human factor was still dominant, without all this irritating intrusive digital technology of today.....
    Greetings from 🇨🇵😎⚓⛵

It’s difficult to imagine these boats in the southern ocean, navigating by sextant. At 4:45 they look like tourists, not racers. The accomplishment is all the more special.
