  • How do I get my dog to stop jumping up on people? Wanting to know how to train a dog to greet people calmly is a question we see often. There are three simple steps to get your dog to never jump on anyone again. It starts with knowing why dogs jump up in the first place.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • The reason dogs jump on people.
    • Why jumping up is rewarding for dogs and why they seek our face.
    • The tactic that I’d never use when dogs jump up.
    • About creating a new history of reinforcement.
    • The three easy steps to stop your dog from jumping up.
    • Why it all starts with your dog understating sit.
    • What the bubble of pressure means for your dog’s greetings.
    • How Crate Games and Hot Zone give you a baseline.
    • What I do that I’ve never seen anyone else do for dog’s jumping up.
    • How greet and re-greet will let your dog learn calm greetings.

Honestly, I love when my dog jumps on me when I get back home. I know some trainers say you should ignore your dog when you first get home, but I live alone and have no friends. This ball of love is the only thing I have, and he is shamelessly telling me how happy he is to see me. I don't want him to stop with me, but I'm afraid this will reinforce the idea with ALL humans.

@@TANGSONGYUANelaborate ? You can squash a dogs drive by over doing it with a dog. Some dogs have an innate instinct to jump and depending on their size, it could be beneficial to leave it be. Anyone wants to meet my dog, they do it on her terms on not theirs or they can jog on

Absolutely brilliant and makes so much sense. You are so right about that re-greet Susan. Some of what you explain/the games I have been doing already, but the re-greet - nope. And so silly because I know Quincy's excitement levels diminish after the first encounter so it makes so much sense that the subsequent greeting will be easier for him. Susan, thank you so much. I shall be starting from stage 1 just so that I know we are doing it correctly, but I know in my heart that this is going to work... and jumping up is a challenge we would love to overcome!

But, if trying to greet another person, she jumps up at what seems like random times and ignores the sit command.

AWESOME as usual! Didn’t know we could extend the “Go See” game in these greeting senarios. My dog would sit when cued but after 2 seconds he would still jump to greet 70% of the time. So would love to hear more on the sit duration.
Would be my best Christmas present if you could talk about dog greeting. I know two dogs greeting on leash is recipe for disaster. How about greeting a friend with a dog who has just arrived for playdate? Would this method work with person with a dog?

I've always had dogs, but have never been much good with training them. Our daughter and her dogs live with us. She has a natural knack for working with critters, and has also taken one of the dogs to multiple obedience courses. Her dogs don't jump unless asked to, and even then, the older one takes a lot of convincing. How wonderful that is when someone comes to the door! Or when I was out walking one day and met an older woman. I could tell she liked dogs, but was apprehensive, because he's pretty big. I was able to let her know he was friendly, but wouldn't jump on her.. Such a lovely moment!!! By way of comparison, we recently visited another family member who has a Cane Corso that is bigger than I am - and has not been trained. That was pretty upsetting.

Loved this video. I have a 2 year old puppy who I can not stop from jumping up on them. She's very energetic with now being on Prozac but not a big difference. Is a 6 foot leash OK to train on jumping?? She's Terrier American pit bull 54 lbs. I adopted her and she was abused tied out ASPCA rescued her. She was 6 mths when I got her. I started training her the main things like sit, shake, high five down and leave it. We have a 1 on one trainer she's added stay then say Nina come, drop it. I feel a little overwhelmed because she's adding 3 cues a week plus the ones I trained her. Thank you so much, hope to hear from you regarding would you get a 6 ft or 15 ft. What is the best action if you're the person being jumped upon? I live in an apartment building (and I love dogs, but don't have one); when I get in the elevator, it is not uncommon for someone to be on the same elevator with a dog; often, the dog jumps up, and the owner is pulling it back and admonishing it. I will stand for a moment, but it's clear that the owner doesn't have control and is often getting pulled around by the dog; so, I kneel down to pet the dog, just to get it to stop jumping (which i understand is rewarding the dog for bad behavior). So, what should i do? Seems like turning my back and taking a step away from the dog would be best? Thanks very much for any suggestions.

Breeder’s granddaughter would pick up pups and hold their nose to hers. They posted weekly litter updates on youtube . She did thar with mine each tine. Low and behold she loves my face. Jumping up to greet or pawing my face when she cuddles with me on the couch.

My border collie does great about not jumping on other people...but she will get excited playing and BOOM, she nails me.

Hi Susan, I know this is an old episode but I ll try my luck.
To me it's not clear the step where in the Re-great, you ask your dog to sit but then before they do anything you call the dog back? How exactly, do you say sit and then pull on the lead? Or just ask sit and come back? Isn't this confusing for the dog, receiving 2 commands at once?

This was super helpful and so many good tips! My only question is, are you sure it's only for reinforcement that a dog jumps up? Sometimes I feel like my Bernedoodle that just turned 9 months does it because he wants to play or is excited. He will full on hit my chest with both of his paws and he does it so fast I can't turn around to remove reinforcement. I guarantee he's not doing this to smell my face! I'll try everything in this video and see if that helps.

Hi @huios100 it could be over excitement or even a dog stressing up. Record keeping will help. Have you had a chance to watch our new video that covers dogs who might jump due to excitement? Here's the link - ua-cam.com/video/1bIBG2B7p1o/v-deo.htmlsi=6Fa7RzLkuXrtryW4

@@DogsThat Thanks! I will check out the link, I could see how it could be excitement or stress. I'm gonna start record keeping for his barking so I'll just add that to it 😊

I like the video and the methods, but it seems like there’s a lot of other stuff to do before this work, or in addition to this work. Do you have a structured class starting from the beginning and working through obedience, manners, and other training?

Regarding video 121, Remy is a 2 year old GR, he does not jump up on people but is overly excited when greeting on walks, so would the video on sit till release be the best tool. Thankyou .

When you teach the sit, is the dog always positioned by your side in the reinforcement zone?

My dog and I are starting the angering sit stage. What does Susan mean exactly when she says “move foreword to meet the dog in RZ to give a treat”. In the video clip right before she says this the dog sits and she keeps walking so the dog is behind her. Thanks for the clarification!

Having serious issues with this. When I am out on a walk with Chester in the bush I may run across others walking occasionally. I try to distract Chester with RZ, hand touches, sit and reward in RZ but he is so strong and pulls so hard to get to the people that he stands on his back paws like a horse would. This is with a halti even. He does not care.
If people come to the house he does the same. Nothing will distract him enough from a new face.
I am not sure what to do in these cases.
