I just gave this a try with my 7 mo old GR. I used a big towel and folded it as we moved along, getting it to about a 12 square at the end. Honestly, I don’t think he ever ‘got it’ that he needed to put both his feet on the square/target. He would get both at times, most often 1 or 1.5 paws on it or he’d stop one inch in front of the square. If I stood there and waited, he would stare, maybe bark at me, lay down ending with one paw across the corner of the square. Susan’s dog was trained so she always put her paws on the target. Susan didn’t show us what to do if the dog stopped shirt or only got one paw. I decided to throw another search treat and give him the chance to come back and put both paws but it didn’t help. I also started over, opening the towel and folding it after he successfully got two paws on it. Once I fold it down to the 12” size, it seems he was maybe only lucky in stepping on it when it was bigger. Any suggestions? I wish Susan would do some of these with a dog who hasn’t learned it yet so we could see how she handles that. Thank you!
Would love to see this exercise done with a dog who's never done it before. I had many things offered besides two front feet on the perch and didn't know where to go from one paw on or both paws on and lying down. And when I thought he'd finally passed the value test, as soon as I try to move him a step to the side, he just walks away. The dog in the video obviously knew to move sideways from pressure. It feels like there are some in between steps needed.
@teresavanbryce6502 some dogs are more sensitive. Her breed has a natural ability for this kind of work. Yours may need you to sloow waaay down. Maybe use a high value rwd. Also determine if the walking away is due to boredom or frustration bc he doesn't understand. If boredom, be more interesting. If frustration, add your leash/collar in and give him less options so he can't get it wrong.
As I’m watching this video my dogs are searching all over for a treat everytime they hear Susan say search and then coming back and looking at me confused. I guess the game works lol
Anyone else considered the funny scene in Friends regarding pivoting wouldn't have happened if they had been educated by Susan the the Dogs That Team :D
My puppy thinks he is so clever when he puts his front paws on the wooden block perch lol lol - he grins up at me like he's all that and a bag of chips - now he's got that part, we are re-watching to do the next part :) xxx My adult dog is so eager she throws all of her feet onto the block and when I stand there and do nothing, she goes, 'oh that's right! and wiggles her back paws off of the block - oh my dog they make me laugh so much every day - Susan Garrett and her team just rock my socks off!
My dog LOVES target training like this! Plus she's super smart and has a good memory. I kind of forgot about our target stick training for a while and just brought it out again. She still remembers it. 💖 So far she knows how to target things with her nose and front paws. She just got introduced to spinning on the target. Looking forward to teaching her to come at my sides. I'm gonna have to use my target stick for that because it really got her confused. Just gotta figure out what to call those "commands". Since english isn't my native language. So far so good though. I'm so proud of my dog. She really is the smartest dog I've ever seen. Love her to bits. And it's amazing to see her in action, seeing her figure out different games and watching her develop. And what's so amazing about perch and target training is how tired they get. It really does take a lot of energy for them to do these exercises. Which is great. A tired dog is a happy dog. ❤
I first watched this video months ago as a new dog owner and really did not understand what you meant by be a splitter, not a lumper. Well, after being a lumper and making essentially zero progress with leash skills here I am learning to be a splitter. It is much more important than I thought and have learned a very valuable lesson in my training and in life in general. Thanks for all of your training tips, Susan!
Wow, thank you so much for these training videos! My 1.5 year old papillon has challenged me in so many ways that my collie never has. My vet recommended looking into cooperative care training and it lead me to your videos. I am so excited to try these exercises with her! I am in Ontario and would love to attend a live seminar/event in the future. Thanks for inspiring us !

I have a 2 year old Boston that I have been doing agility training with or 1 + years. Recently she has become disinterested and distracted while training. I want this to be fun for her not stressful. She also has always pulled on a leash. I practice this perch training one time and took her for a walk and was amazed. She only extended the leash one or two times and I said closer and she corrected her behavior. We are going to take a break from agility training and work on some of the foundation stuff to reinforce our relationship then take another go at it. Thank you. Look forward to learning more from your videos
Awesome! It serves so many purposes but I love how you have them bring their hind end toward you. I’ve just done the first method where they spin away but your way certainly reinforces the “next to me, heel/place” position.
Susan Garrett this is a game changer, having the dog come in close on a target. Thank you for great information always. I’m not competing but I do work my dog to improve us both.
Another reason to do both sides is Rodeo Dog! Just barrels and tunnels, so kind of a mini agility, but a lot of the exercises are done with the dog on the right. Great exercise, especially for older dogs and dogs with joint issues as there isn't any jumping or possibility of falling off an obstacle. Hope that helps.
We actually have already do this while walking. I use “tighten up” for left side and “this side” for right. I discovered that when I sidestep my dog also sidesteps. I appreciate you reminding everyone to switch sides. I have found my dog need to practice to work both sides or it becomes very difficult for him. I like the way you had This switch sides by rotating. I’m going to introduce that to my pup. I have been asking him to go around me. My dog is 8 months old. I like to break up my loose leash walks with games. We stop & play games like tug, food toss/search, hand targets. Can you share games or behaviors that would be easy to do and make loose leash walking in the neighborhood more fun?
I love your Chanel as much as l love you! You are not only teach us tricks but most importantly, you teach us the fundamental reasons that align with it. I review your videos when I need to recall or reinforce positive behaviors. This is my first puppy, so much encouraging and hopes after I watch your videos. Thanks!
This is great thank you! I had been taught some pivot and spin things in puppy training class, but now I understand the why and how much better! Thank you for breaking it down into steps so I can build slowly and know how to go back when something isn't working.
Just tried this on my kelpie boy who's a puller and reactive walker. He did it straight away then was testing me by standing next to the blanket i waited 3 secs and then did search again with lower value treat. It worked he quickly realised if he didn't step on blanket no nom nom treats...i took him outside to play fetch after and he was dropping ball right in front were the blanket would be which is better his usual throw it vaguely at me. 😂 I really hope it helps his walkies, doing your challenge of 3-4times a day for 3mins. Crossing fingers😊
My 10 week old started doing well but now he is all over the place. The two areas most challenging is nipping a lot, and all over the place to eat pine cones/sticks etc when walking. I’ve been working with the leash trying you showed and he will do well intermittently but more distracted.
Hi Patsy! Our channel has so much help for puppies, here's our Puppy Biting playlist: ua-cam.com/video/6WpFeiJUxTQ/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB And another one with Essentials: ua-cam.com/video/rUIX5qW85tU/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB Happy training!
Great Video Susan! I have completed 3 class courses with my Cairn terrier and we did a few jumps but there was nothing more advanced offered. She's smart & ready to add more agility & tricks. I'm very glad to have found you online & forwarding your videos to friends & family with dogs! Thankyou for the great training!
Thank you for another very easy to follow video. Its great how you break it down into steps, I like the whiteboard too and explain what to.do if it needs a tweak. Thank you.
I’m going to do this with my girl, Fada! She’s a Kuvasz mix and could use the proprioception skills and fitness gained in these exercises. Plus she already understands paw and nose targets, I hope it makes the process easier =) I love how you broke down the steps to have the dog move da butt, she’s a big girl and tends to step backwards to move the rear legs, but w/ the small lateral steps like you did, it’ll be much clearer for her to understand.
This has been really helpful, thank you. I already have quite a few “tricks” that I do with my border collie,Floss, but wanted to find some new things to broaden the scope a bit. She is 10 years old and really seems to still enjoy learning new stuff and she picks things up very quickly so hopefully not too old to learn some more. The things I find hardest of all is finding new things to teach her and then putting across to her what I want her to do. Sometimes she looks at me as if to say “ well, I can see you are trying to teach me something, but I have no idea what it is” 😂 the fault is clearly with my lack of teaching ability! I have subscribed to your channel and will be studying closely. Love the colours in your room, by the way. Many thanks from France xx
Thanks for perch & pivots. I compete with my italian greyhounds in the show ring where i need them to move slightly ahead of me, not at seam, driving forward (not pulling), and looking straight ahead (not looking at me) . Please do a podcast for trainìng this different work on leash. Thanks heaps, jen
This is fantastic and I can totally see how it will help me with walking on loose leash. I am a little overwhelmed with all the training games for different skills and following through to really get the behaviors well conditioned.
Dear ms Garett 🙏❤️thank you so much!! Thanks to your training (Perch and Leash on UA-cam ) and listening to your other UA-cam videos. After 6 weeks (constant progress) daily training we can take pleasant walks with our now 8 1/2 months old gsd 😘❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Susan, I love the way you teach positive training. I am having a hard time getting my dog to put her front feet on the Perch. I'm gonna keep trying.
I commented by accident on a different video regarding pivots and spins. I want to say thank you so very much. This has helped a great deal. I can finally visualize what my Rally O trainer has been saying. Also glad to hear this is will eventually help with trick training too. Thank you so very much.
Thank you so much for all of this interesting and helpful information! I have just started working through these steps with my 3 month old puppy and she is doing so well! I am amazed! And I look forward to seeing how she does with our walks on leash this week as we work through the steps.
This is great! I need to definitely get my puppy to learn these pivots. He's not old enough yet to go out in public until he's had all his Parvo vaccine boosters, but I want to get him used to staying at my side rather than pulling on the leash in his excitement. He is starting to rush ahead when I take him out in my back yard to go to the bathroom. I have been doing the search game with him in my kitchen but not with a perch yet.
Practice. Individually practice a good heel then pair them. practice both sides. I had one dog that walked either side, the other always did left heel. But I had to train that one a LOT to get a good loose leash walk. Important cuz they feed off each others energy.
Susan you're the boss!! Since I've found your videos I'm only using your method to train my puppy. He's loving the training sessions and I'm loving how easy you make it. Thank you!!! One question, do you have a video where you show how to make them go to their beds, like yours does in this video?
Thank youuuu!!@@DogsThat I have another question. Im rehearsing this everyday. My dog will soon get it 100% (which im super grateful for!), is there a video where Susan shows how to transition from this to a lose leash walk?
We are getting the spins down pretty well! Any time I move my body he wants to front face me, so I think getting the pivots to my side will be a challenge. We are excited to practice!
@@katsim6799 I did, and the target sticks definitely helped! Also, if you take a treat in your hand (same side as you're heeling on) and get them into a heel, hold that hand on the outside of them and pull it around their head so they have to turn their head a little bit. That swings their butt into your body so it can be in line with you, and you can reward with that treat! I did the same thing with a target stick, but found it easier to steer him with the treat since it was a more immediate reward. When using the target stick, as soon as I would click, he would start to turn to face me and break that perfect heel position.
I listen to your podcast and watch the videos. Such great info to reinforce existing training and to introduce new training. I watch the videos more than once to reinforce the human doing the training. I'd really love to see how to teach more advanced tricks.
Gosh I love your videos, Susan ! I really wish the 4 mymerles toys were not so darned expensive. Do you have a (local... US) source that is more affordable? Many thanks. I think you're genius and I am loving implementing your training strategies with my 5 mo old pup !
I found a great perch at Walmart (Fort Worth anyway). 10.5 inch round black RUBBER 9so flexible) 3 qt. dog bowl. 4" high. Durable and non slippery. Only $4.92!
thank you! I am looking forward to teaching this to both my dogs! I already have hand signals for my deaf GSD. This may be a game changer for her. I just listened to your episode about high drive dogs, which she is, and it helped me to see how I can do some things different to help her feel more secure.
Thank you for this video first of all. Was looking for some help. I can't get past the blanket stage because my dog just wants to run back and lay down on the blanket. No matter how small i fold it.
We're still at the beginning stages, but have found that Zoso, my 2 yr old Dobe, comes in so much faster in the morning right before breakfast because he's going to get to practice with me. Has nothing to do with his breakfast, just that I've been consistent about practicing at that time. Before starting this perch work practice time, he'd take forever to come in.
Hi Susan. I love your training. My 6 year old dog seems more focused on the reward than the actual task I am trying to teach her. How do I correct this?
Love your videos! So much to learn. I'm wondering how you get your pup's to put their front paws on the perch. My puppy will put one foot on and my 2 year old just lays down and looks at me like huh 😊
Teach your dog the “search” cue of throwing a cookie on the floor to chase. This will get him up and moving to reset him, then pay him a higher value for paws on target as she shows would be what I would do
Hi Matt, great question! Susan has a video called "Clicker Training: Will It Work For Every Dog?", this video explains everything you need to know about Clicker Training. Here is the link so you can check it out: ua-cam.com/video/Hl2aB1TrE1E/v-deo.html
I've got a small dog too and it's not always easy. Tips would be great. I can see having a bigger dog is just perfect for reinforcment zone as their nose is in the right place to reward straight away.
OMG thank you so much for the great demo with This! Hopefully with the foundation from Recallers games, my dog will nail it as good as This! did. Tried... he got frustrated while I waited for his hind legs to move. Will keep at it while I wait for more new tricks to learn from you... I like how you taught Mentum (I believe) to cross her front legs. Oh... and also the stretching of hind leg one at a time. Whatever you teach your dogs are soooo coool. I'm going to teach my dog the 'beg' trick to ask for more lol.
Same problem. My dog will just stand and stare at me and then jump off and get up again. Even walking right round to stand beside him just makes him look up at me. I tried using a target stick to get him to turn but he just twists his head and neck right round. Not sure how to get past this phase of waiting for his back legs to shift.
Thank you! I really appreciate these short training videos. I want to help my dog (and he loves training games) but I get overwhelmed. He did great with this but when the blanket was about the size of a perch, he overshot about 30% of the time. Did I make the target too small too soon? Thanks again
Thanks for this! I may have just missed it but the dog in the video does not miss the target even once. What should we do when the dog does not come back and stand on the blanket or the perch?
So appreciate all this training! Slowly working our way through it. Quick question, what kind of "tiles" do you mean to replace the phone book? Thanks!
great video Susan , would you show how you work around or with a dog that is hyperfocus on stimuli out on a walk or backyard, do you put together a series of exercises and behaviors together or keep re enacting these at home ?

So happy to have discovered you. We've got a new JRT puppy and its's so fun to find all these great things to do. Thanks!!!
Watching from Brasil ❤
Thanks for making this video, it really highlights trouble I've had. Also this really shows the value of the cue Search!
This is very helpful! I've never done pivot and spin work, so I'm taking careful notes. I think I'm a lumper! Ha! Ha!
very good explanation how to test understanding.
Great clip thank you Susan and This.
Thank you, we're glad you found it helpful ❤️
Good video.
Wonderful training. Thank you. Hind work would be fun to see how you teach your dogs.
Susan you're the boss!! Since I've found your videos I'm only using your method to train my puppy. He's loving the training sessions and I'm loving how easy you make it. Thank you!!! One question, do you have a video where you show how to make them go to their beds, like yours does in this video?
Hola! And thank you ❤️ Susan teaches Hot Zone in her "training multiple dogs" video, here's the link for you: ua-cam.com/video/u4L-ra0fwc8/v-deo.html
Thank youuuu!!@@DogsThat I have another question. Im rehearsing this everyday. My dog will soon get it 100% (which im super grateful for!), is there a video where Susan shows how to transition from this to a lose leash walk?
Hi @aprendebudismo6425, Susan has a playlist for loose leash walking to help - ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy1mGMfdVKXq_hiJ27Ej1shW.html
Excellent. Appreciate the explanations
Hi, amazing video!! could you maybe do a video about teaching the orbit? :)
Awesome. Been trying to work on this. Love these new tips to try!
Excellent work! If you’re ever in the California area, I would love to have you be a guest instructor for an episode on my channel. 😁🐶
Hey Nate, I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the invite. Susan
We are getting the spins down pretty well! Any time I move my body he wants to front face me, so I think getting the pivots to my side will be a challenge. We are excited to practice!
Emma, have you tried a target stick? I want to try that to get pivot in the heel position to be better.
Great review for me with my 10 month old IG pup that I haven't done this with!
Wonderful!
I listen to your podcast and watch the videos. Such great info to reinforce existing training and to introduce new training. I watch the videos more than once to reinforce the human doing the training. I'd really love to see how to teach more advanced tricks.
I’d love to see more trick videos like this. I love the demo of the paws crossing from the target video... I’m sure how to shape that.
Where is the video about paw crossing?
This is amazing! I have an 8 month old spanish mastín cross and I've been trying to train her, but have never use a clicker - is it too late to start?
Hi @alishagarcia5150, share a short video with us in the classroom we'd love to help 💚
thank you so much
any tips on getting the doggo's back end to move please?? Just leaves the pivot instead. Another great training video, thanks !!
He loves to work!
This will get him up and moving to reset him, then pay him a higher value for paws on target as she shows would be what I would do
It makes so much sense when you show us! Thank you. 9 mo BC mix learning so quickly. Can’t wait to start this!!!
Awesome as usual Susan!
Phinn is laying next to me as I watch this. Since he knows the search cue, he heard you cue and raised a brow. 😮
Thanks so much! I will start practicing this one 😊
More great content from Susan Garrett ❤️ thanks so much!
Do you NEED to use Clicker? All the training I've done wiv my dog I've never used a clicker.. Thanks for great vid Susan.... 😊😊😊
Hi Matt, great question! Susan has a video called "Clicker Training: Will It Work For Every Dog?", this video explains everything you need to know about Clicker Training. Here is the link so you can check it out: ua-cam.com/video/Hl2aB1TrE1E/v-deo.html
I did learn a lot! Thank you.
could you give tips for working with shorter or smaller dogs. I have a JRT and find it hard to bend down to get the treats in the month. Any tips.
Thanks Susan ❤️
Love it
thanks for this video
Glad it's helpful, thank you Dawid!
Loved it! I hope it helps with our walking too!
This is a super student ! 🥳👏🏻
How many training sessions to get our dogs to This’s level ?
Hi Janis, it will vary from dog to dog, let your dog's confidence by the guide for your progress ❤️
Thanks!
Love this video. Would also like to see how you used targeting to get dog to lift legs.
great video Susan , would you show how you work around or with a dog that is hyperfocus on stimuli out on a walk or backyard, do you put together a series of exercises and behaviors together or keep re enacting these at home ?
