Jeff Healey is Canadian and he is blind. He lost his eyesight to cancer when he was around a year old. His father gave him a guitar when he was three and because he was so little he couldn't reach the strings so he put it on his lap and he became comfortable playing it that way. He became friends with Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Unfortunately the cancer came back and he passed when he was in his forties.
    Brilliant guitarist!

Terrific reaction to one of Canada's greatest for sure. This isn't the Jeff Healey Band though, this is Jeff with a bit of a star-studded lineup, with Marcus Miller on the bass, the legendary Dr. John on piano and Omar Hakim on drums. This was a one-off TV gig, but they all cook like hell here for sure. Great choice - peace and love from Canada ☮

Born in Toronto, Ontario,Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant; his adoptive father was a firefighter. When he was almost one year old, Healey lost his sight due to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes. His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given ocular prostheses.

JEFF HEALY (Canadian artist) was a genius bluesman and his playing on the recumbent guitar (technically much more difficult to play than the pedal steel and lap steel) was always breathtaking. Sadly, cancer too quickly deprived us of his masterful talent. Thanks.

Jeff's parents gave him a guitar as a present when he was a kid. Since he was blind, he had no frame of reference as to the normal way to play it. So he taught himself guitar by just laying it across his lap.

That was a treat. Jeff Healey deserves to be known and recognized as one of the greats. I've seen two other blind guitarists who play lap-style like that and it does make sense since you can play with all five fingers.
Playing with one's teeth ("tooth picking"?) is a Blues thing that goes back to street musicians of the '30s. Jimi re-introduced it.
One of the things that I enjoy about this channel is how musicians that I've been digging for decades are new to our host. Might I suggest checking out that "Ragtime Dandy" - Dr. John. In his early Voodoo period he recorded a song called "Walk On Gilded Splinters" that you might enjoy. Humble Pie also do long jam live version of it.

If you like this, then you'll also probably like his 'As the Years Go Passing By' live performance from 1995 in Germany.

Dr John (keys), Marcus Miller (bass), and Omar Hakim (drums) were already highly acclaimed musicians themselves, by this point in their respective careers.
The guys you named were Healey's studio and touring band, for the most part, but he was obviously happy to play with other great musicians too, including (of course) Stevie Ray Vaughan).

Check out "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann . Another version by Bruce Springsteen is really good, too. I love both of them.
