I think you hit on something when you said "what could we have done for him?" It's a heavy feeling as a fan, when someone's art helped you through some really dark times, to lose that person this way. You feel you owe them so much, you feel so close to them; but it's this parasocial relationship where you didn't really know them, and they certainly didn't know you. It's hard to navigate those emotions, but I think the best thing we can do to honour Chester is to not repeat his mistakes. I feel certain that he wouldn't want a single other person to follow in his footsteps. That if he could, he'd undo the mistake he made that night.
I've tried to learn from him. When I have thoughts about being unworthy of life, being just a burden on the world, that I should just end my life for everyone's sake; I sometimes manage to remind myself that these sort of thoughts are most likely what Chester thought. That one night, lost in grief, he fully believed in them and acted on them. But they weren't true. That sort of thoughts are liars, and they steal people away from us. Then I get angry and defiant. Fuck those thoughts. They took someone important from me, they took away someone so sweet and loving and funny and wanted by so many. If someone like Chester could believe them, that shows how untrustworthy they are.
I can't truly say what the impact of my death would be, but I try to remember that those sort of thoughts can't be trusted to tell me the truth about it.
