  • In this video I’ll be looking at the Neewer EZa-C1 Intervalometer.
“An intervalometer is a device which counts intervals of time. Such devices commonly are used to signal, in accurate time intervals, the operation of some other device. For instance, an intervalometer might activate something every 30 seconds. Other names include interval meter and interval timer.” Wikipedia
The EZa is a great device and you can pick it up from around £10. If you really wanted you can get MagicLantern software for your Canon which enables an inbuilt intervalometer - but I prefer the use of hardware and of course there is always the risk of putting to much strain on your camera and bricking (killing) it with ML. I’ve found the device is particularly handy for doing time-lapses made from stills. Allowing me to make high quality long length time lapses without having to worry about the time record/ file size cap on camera or SD card that comes with video. As my Canon 600D takes stills at a resolution of 16Megapixels at 5184x3456 That allows me to make 5k time lapses from the stills. Which considering it’s a 5/6 year old mid range DSLR that is limited to 1080p 30fps - for the cost of £10 - You are really getting your moneys worth for that alone.
The build is solid and rugged and fit’s comfortably in my hand. The device has been left on for well over a month now and still haven’t had to change the batteries - apparently the device will function for a good 2 months or so depending on the level of usage of course. The batteries are AAA’s so fairly common and easy to get hold of. The cable is a decent length but not so long it’s unmanageable and it’s pretty durable cable too. It connects via a 2.5mm TRS as standard and the device is plug and play which I love.
It’s pretty portable and fits in my small camera bag pretty easily but it’s not exactly going to fit easily into a skinny jean pocket. Also it has a little hole for a wrist strap / lanyard. It just does exactly what is says on the tin which you all know I love. I’m sure there are fancier and more expensive options out there if you really must but this is just nice and simple.
My only real issue - and it’s a small one - is that the shutter release is pretty firm and if you had trouble with your hands that could be a stumbling block for you. However saying that it could just be the fact I need to ware it in a little bit more?
But the Timer start stop button is easy enough to press though and that’s really what the device is for. You can use the shutter release button to focus up as well as release the shutter to take a photo. There is an accompanying red/green indicator light on the top right of the device too which is a nice bit visual feedback. Also the device has a running lock which allows you to use the bulb function / continuous shoot function of your camera.
I love the buttons on this thing - they feel fantastic - almost reminiscent of texting on an old Nokia and the device also has a beeper which you can easily disable. Figuring out the device and navigating through the menus didn’t take me long to figure out and learning how to setup and use the device was straight forward enough - if you’re not that tech savvy then there are plenty of tutorials out there!
Really been enjoying using this device and like I said at £10 enabling me to make UHD time lapses is just wonderful. 100% can recommend!

I wish you could turn it off when done.

I was disappointed to discover that you can't shoot bracketed shots with this.

Terry Dunlap ah that’s a shame - I guess that’s more of the camera itself?
