I’m glad to see they are back. I used to go to Camino Island and shoot them there and got some excellent photographs. I was afraid after they allowed flooding of the fields where the short haired owls would go
Scott!!! Oh man, I know right where you are - I was there in March and it blew my mind. I was not going to drive out there this year but ....... I have a little time in December just before Christmas so I may - you have changed my mind. I did a video from that same place. Oh man, thank you for sharing this - simply an amazing place and you are fortunate to have it closer to you than it is to me. Thank you, thank you. 🙏🤗💖
@@scotthillphotography Oh no, I had gone in January of this year just as the worst snow storm in 30 years was coming in. I drove back after only shooting one afternoon at Juanita Bay park. I went BACK in March as that was as soon as I could. If I dont make it later this month, I will plan for December of 2025. Big trip in April to Arizona to shoot hummingbirds, then again end of July so dedicating my cash flow more towards that. Really gonna try to swing later this month though. 🤗
Scott, I just came across your channel and am enjoying your pics and videos. I’m pretty new at photography, my wife is the expert. I recently bought the R6 Mark 2 and after that I finally received the 200 - 600 Canon lens. I haven’t had opportunity to get out with it but your content using the lens is encouraging. Thanks again, your work is appreciated.
Hey Scott, thank you for sharing your great encounters with some awesome birds of prey! I am thinking about visiting the Skagit County in mid July and was wondering if there also is a chance to spot short-eared owls or if you have other recommodations for birding at this time of the year? Greetings from Alex (Germany)
Glad you liked it! The shorties will be gone by July. You should go for shorebirds because of the low tides at that time of the year. Visit beaches, the islands such as Camano Island and Whidbey Island. I don't recommend going when the tide is at its lowest, unless you're willing to walk really far out. Good luck!
Awesome shots and footage. Never been to the Samish Flats but if I was to go, do you just drive around and look for birds in flight? It’s a 3 hour drive for me so I wouldn’t want to just drive there aimlessly. Any tips would be much appreciated!
@@davidroberts5535 Yes, drive around and look for birds of prey. Pulling over often, take out binoculars and look around. The best months to go is November, December, January, and February. Also look for other people pulled over looking at birds and that may lead you to something. I prefer to arrive there at dawn or hang around late afternoon to dusk to see the owls. Good luck!
@@scotthillphotographyappreciate it. Might have to make it an overnight trip. Funny story…I’ve always wanted to photograph owls and the very last place I thought I’d see one and get a photograph was during my family trip to Kauai. We were driving back from a hike in the evening and I happened to see what I thought was an owl. I pulled over and got a few blurry images of it and after zooming in on my lcd, I realized that indeed it was an owl. I believe it was a short ear owl. Thanks again.
So good!! I can’t wait for my trip!
@@Amaesphotography Yesss!!!

I will have to check out camano island! Yup, flooding does get in the way of their hunting. Hopefully we will be ok this season!
