Superb! Short-eared owl winter in Ireland but in smaller numbers compared to Britain, But its very rare to see Long-eared owls hunting in daylight here in Ireland as Field Vole is largely absent and a small population of Field Vole have only recently been found in Ireland.

Had 5 Short Eared Owls near a church last year all winter and into spring. A joy to see. In the same 4 day period one week there was also a Long Eared Owl, Barn Owl and the resident Lt Owl. Great filming and a fantastic way to spend time with the young n's. ✌🏼

Thanks Mike. Lovely video. It was a great afternoon (I was the bloke stood by the wall when the owl came to perch 15ft away) it had done the same thing 3 times the day before! It can get busy there but hopefully everyone will continue to behave responsibly and the owls will remain as relaxed around people as they are now.

Brilliant footage Mike! Sadly it’s a much quieter year for shorties for me, last year a couple of local birders with big twitter followings (rspb involved no less) decided to tweet daily updates about a site locally known and kept quiet for years. Soon you could head down and see 30+ photographers/birders and cars along a 50m stretch - the owls haven’t returned this year.
Shorties are not site faithful birds and are notoriously changeable regarding winter sites - ones with good numbers one year get few or none the next - with no real links to numbers of birders present. Most come to us in Winter from colder climates like Scandinavia and Iceland. I see this on my local site the Dee estuary, numbers not great this year but can easily be 6 plus other years on a days visit .local dog walkers are a bigger problem, ignoring 'no access' signs etc but still appear to have no effect on numbers year on year

Completely understand if not, would just thoroughly enjoy observing them :) (I wouldn't share the location with anyone else)

Hi thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻 just in response to a couple of your comments firstly I don’t understand why you had to mention the lens I was using and on why that would have anything to do with the location and who goes there. This is a well known location that many people with all types of gear use? Just because I use a prime lens shouldn’t be an issue? I do photography professionally so in order for me to get the best for my clients I use prime lenses, I’m sure you wouldn’t have a pop at a carpenter for using dewalt tools instead of black and decker? The other point about me keeping this location undisclosed is for the protection of the wildlife and nothing to do with gatekeeping, with this video going out for everyone in the public there is no way of me vetting a person, I have seen some horrendous things over the years where certain individuals have really endangered the wildlife in order to get photos or even worse wanted to harm certain wildlife. For this reason I will not disclose any location on my channel for the sake of the wildlife which is what I always put first. I hope you understand that 🙏🏻

Hi thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻 just in response to a couple of your comments firstly I don’t understand why you had to mention the lens I was using and on why that would have anything to do with the location and who goes there. This is a well known location that many people with all types of gear use? Just because I use a prime lens shouldn’t be an issue? I do photography professionally so in order for me to get the best for my clients I use prime lenses, I’m sure you wouldn’t have a pop at a carpenter for using dewalt tools instead of black and decker? The other point about me keeping this location undisclosed is for the protection of the wildlife and nothing to do with gatekeeping, with this video going out for everyone in the public there is no way of me vetting a person, I have seen some horrendous things over the years where certain individuals have really endangered the wildlife in order to get photos or even worse wanted to harm certain wildlife. For this reason I will not disclose any location on my channel for the sake of the wildlife which is what I always put first. I hope you understand that 🙏🏻

As long as people behave themselves then it’s not a problem but like you I prefer to be in quieter locations.
