  • What is the difference between "say" and "tell"? And what is the difference between talk/ speak and discuss?
    German speakers sometimes mix these words up. The meanings of the verbs are similar but the grammar of the verbs are different. Watch the video and learn the differences.

      say is the infinitive and present tense. said is the past tense. Hope this helps, Kithmal Mahanama.

    I think the two way or one way communication isn't much helpful. I would prefer ( if I understand it correctly) that "tell" is used, when you have or had a conversation with someone, and "say" is used, when someone tells you about what is being said. Right?
    To point out what I mean:
    "He said he was going home." That's not a conversation between two or X people, it's just a statement. Even if no one heard what he said, it would be still "say/said".
    "He told me to finish the report." That is or it was actually a conversation between two people.

      Arjun Adhikari tell is the infinitive and the present tense. told is past tense.
      say is the infinitive and the present tense. said is past tense.
