Aaah this was one of my very first consoles and I loved it. I got the Nes and Master System in 1986 which started my long winding road as a gamer. My Master System came with Astro Warriors/Hang-On multicart and two controllers (plus the secret Snail Maze game). My Nes was the Action Set and csme with Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt cart, grey gun, and two controllers. Very cool memories... Addendum- Thank you for making this video!
I'm glad you liked the video. My first Master System came with the cartridge for Hang On & Safari Hunt. I'm not quite sure what happened but we had to replace the SMS at some point with another one. Though the console looked exactly the same, Hang On & Safari Hunt came built-in to the console. No more cartridge.
Thank you for uploading this.:) wow, i remem er I was 16 yrs old and i went to Crazy Eddies with my dad and he new the manager and my bougbt me the First Sega system base version for $59. Great memories long live Sega. When it came to inovation Sega was the BEST when it came to hardware. Everyone else would follow them. History speaks for itself
Where I'm from in the UK, everyone had the SMS. A few people had an NES, but the SMS ruled the playground. I've had mine since 1991 and it still works great. There are quite a few games I still really enjoy playing for it too.
i remember getting this one back in summer of 1987.sure it wasn't as famous as the Nintendo Nes (still have both of these) but it boasted better colors and sound. if Nintendo didn't control half of the market i bet this could have sold much better... i liked the fact that games also came on the sega cards which was a unique feature(for the time) the sega master system is underrated like the atari 7800 they really never got a chance.. i still have mine and play it to this day. the master system had some great games.
You're welcome. The Master System has a special place in my heart because it was my first major console after having a Coleco Gemini (Atari 2600 clone). As for the Dreamcast, wow, would love one. Very impressive system. I see you're not a fan of Microsoft, judging from the $ symbol you used. Too bad. Microsoft makes good games, great hardware, and has in fact, been making games for a LONG time. They just haven't been making consoles games until the original Xbox.
Dang, because I moved shortly after making that video, I had to pack it away. If I ever get a bigger place, I'm bringing it back out. In the mean time, I'll try another source for the information.
It's a shame that this system was cancelled early in the US. The last US game that came out was Sonic 1 in 1991. Here in Europe, Sonic 1 was only the beginning of many more good games to come, ones that really stretched the hardware (like 1993's Power Strike II). The last EU game was Smurfs 2 in 1996(!).
Hi Great unboxing. Can you tell me some details about the power supply? I am missing this from my old system so need to find a replacement or alternative. Thanks.
Thanks so much for taking your time with the unboxing! It reminds me of when I opened up mine in December 1986. I was so excited. Always had Sega consoles. The Master System is probably my favorite out of them all. I did like Genesis, and really liked Dreamcast. But the Master System, something about the whole experience. Now believe it or not, I play Nintendo! Never saw that coming. I would never play Sony or Micro$oft. They are NOT classic game makers. thanks again for posting!
I had to watch your video to confirm the system indeed came with a cartridge. The one I got for one Christmas as a kid didn't include one for some odd reason and when we returned it, Toys R Us didn't have any replacements 😑 and that's the story of how I became "proud" owner of the Atari 7800
Hmm, the first Sega Master System came with a 2 game cartridge. A year or so later, those two games were built in and they no longer packed the cartridge. System looked exactly the same. Any chance you returned that system before turning it on?
This to me was way better built than the Nes. Especially considering they both came out the same time. Sega had it better with the top loading cartridges design, that nes model 1 cartridge load mechanism thing was a terrible design.
I want the power base converter ^^ or this one, but ether way I want to start collecting games for it like all Alex Kidd and shinobi and of course the sonic games :)
ShockPopStudios Actually, what I didn't make clear in the video is that the Master System was Sega's first console for the U.S.. They had a console in Japan before this.
Sega en europe etait au top !! in america no = agressive exclusive marketing system by nintendo. Aujour d hui je penses que beaucoup souhaiterait plus voir une sega 256 bits meme en box avec clouding qu une WII U 2 etc

My cousins Master System was like that and I still don't know if you can access the Snail Maze game if it has a built in cart.
@@Sinn0100 hmm I'm almost certain
I miss the Videogames frome 80s and 90s. 😊😊😊
I've heard that. Makes me happy that the masses there enjoyed the SMS.

I Love The Master System Too

*Love this machine!! The games were built inside the machine in Europe and Japan and the light phaser was the Zillion one!* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
My second Master System console had Hang On & Safari Hunt built in, USA. Zillion? Will have to look that up.
Light phaser was modeled after the zillion anime cartoon Gun.

The colors really did pop!
The light gun reminds me of the gun from Out of this World/Another World.
It's definitely belongs in a sci-fi movie.
It's so beautiful. >< I can't wait to have one on my own. I still have fond memories of playing the original Shinobi.
Remember 1-800-USA-SEGA? You could call for free and get tips on any SMS game. They would even send free printouts of the tips for the entire game.
*Really? Better than Nintendo hotline and that cost a lot of money if you had a slow employee* 😂
Tks man for share this unboxing with us, For a moment I stopped all my things here and I thought about my childhood was amazing.! Tks!
I unboxed this one awesome Christmas as a child in the 80's. Thanks for the video!

I'm sad that it didn't take off on your end of the world.
Us Aussies loved the thing, as well as the UK.
***** Yeesh, I know... Didn't you guys only get like 80 games over there?
102 l think
Last was sonic here
Some games for the master system are common around jere
Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Thunder Blade, Choplifter

yah, i know. I remember there were 4 of us in the neighborhood who had SMS. I was surprised, but happy about that.
4 people in one neighborhood? Must have been Brazil or Europe.

Oh believe me, if I ever get one, I will! And thank you, as soon as I get settled into my new home (few months?), I will make more.

“This is an unboxing of the the SEGA master system”
Indeed.
Musicwise, I liked the Master System's sound chip, the Texas Instruments SN-76489 sound processor a lot better than the NES's PCM sound chip.
Hmm, I don't think I ever heard anyone say that before. I had no complaints with the SMS sound chip myself.
You're welcome Richard. Part of the reason I do this is to relive my childhood :)
Loved this system.
I would still have the one we had as a kid if it wasn't stolen... argh.
I need those games too!
Sega Master System ruled the market in Australia in the late 80s and early 90s. NES was a close second.
And new zealand
TheUsbGamer And Ireland
It also ruled in the UK, France and most of Europe
Nice!
LOL same here! Was quite an issue on the school bus.
Nice! I had a Master System and loved it, but all my friends at school had Nintendo instead. : /
Those losers! hehe ;)
Hang on and Safari Hunt was built into my console, It didn’t have a cartridge. Hmm.. 🤔
Yep, I forget the year, but Sega did make a series with those games built in. I had one of those consoles too.
the nes has a start/pause button on the controller

No HDMI cable? that's sad...
Just kidding! Thanks for this epic unboxing! :D
Why do all the master system game boxes have cover art that looks like it was made with ms paint and clip art?
People are idiots
Think Tom meant in terms of sales.
In what ways were the cards better than the cartridges?
Did I say that in the video? If I did, I must have meant size-wise, not content.
did they made super hangon??
Don't think they made Super Hang On for the SMS. I think they did for the Mega Drive.
👍😊
Ah ha! You like it!
I want the power base converter ^^ or this one, but ether way I want to start collecting games for it like all Alex Kidd and shinobi and of course the sonic games :)
I always thought genesis (model 2) was sega's first console but then again I was born in 87' lol

Some of these games are really good.

unknowingly headbanging to this music wtf? LOL
What? That makes no sense, the SMS was alot more powerful but sold fewer units so it has more in common with the PS3
why did I sell SMS..SAD..
We all make mistakes.
well i have a snes i threw it away because of the bad graphics and most of time the noise sounded terrible on super mario bros worked fine
it still looks really mint! lucky

It is a cool looking system, no doubt!
In Brazil and Europe the sega master system ruled beating the nes.
In Europe nes did sell better
That makes both of us ;)
i like the music
THX KOTAKU! :)
Same console from regular show
Hmm?
That was the PS3 of 1986...lol
Just about everything is from ebay.
@bman73507 I remember that wow..:)
REGULAR SHOW!!
If I only could afford to do that :)
Master system unboxing - Worst music in all recorded history = the best.
The box art for most of these games were absolute garbage though.
A common complaint lol
