My current reel is a K.P MORRITTS "Intrepid Surfcaster" from the 60's (I think), works just fine and has caught me a lot of fish over the last 40 years.
The Mitchell 402 uses what Mitchelled their planamatic line retrieving technology. Many people Calle it a planetary line laying on the spool. I don’t know where you found a 402 for $10.00 but if it was in good working order that was a great deal. I own over 70 French Mitchell and Garcia Mitchell and all but two are vintage saltwater reels. I own a collection of over 370 vintage mostly saltwater spinning reels that were manufactured no later than the 1980s. I only fish with vintage reels. I even built an all chrome Mitchell 498 PUM reel entirely from parts. It took three months to complete. Of course I don’t use that reel as it is too valuable and so very beautiful. I have 5 other 498s I use for surf fishing. I have matched pairs on bailed and PUM models of the Mitchell 306, 302, and 402 as well as other makes like Bretton, BAM Peerless, Luxor, Hellion et Punch, and even Penn (700, and 704 Greenies and the black and gold 704Z / 706Z). My earliest spinning reels are Luxors and Hellion et Punch from France made in the late 1940s. I will guarantee that Shimano Stella will not last for 50 years like you vintage Mitchell has. I love your videos comparing vintage and modern tackle that you occasionally do. I remember when you used a Penn Greenie for comparison. I didn’t necessarily agree with your conclusion but it was a great and memorable video! I love all my Greenies. I have two 1961 Penn Spinfisher 700 reels (green handles) that were the first spinning reels that Penn ever made and they still operate perfectly! I also have a Penn 700 greenie with the painted handle. One of my favorite reels. I service it at the end of the season and it just keeps on working. Love my 704 Greenie too!
I just can't fathom having a reel I can't maintain myself. That's just part of the fun and you learn so much by doing it. Of course, the same goes for learning how to build your own rods so you learn about spines and why a rod for a spinning reel shouldn't be simply flipped over to use what you call a "conventional" reel on it.
Brendon have you tried van staals? You can reel it under the sandy water no issues. I’ve been staying away from the surf bc I’m so tired of cleaning my car lol. Been doing striper fishing with my BFS gear throwing super light 1/16-1/8 oz lures. Caught a 24” striper on a 1/16 oz 2” keitech ! I’m enjoying the ultralight bass fishing game. This was a great video btw I love the comparison.
Two things: My first Garcia was a Rod& Reel Combo with a solid fiberglass rod! Tube glass rods were just coming into vogue for Freshwater fishing. 1970 time frame. The rod lasted for years until I forgot it during a relocation. I replaced eyes and the neighbor taught me how to wrap. My favorite reel though was a Penn 209 Level Wind used mostly for fishing on the Lake Worth Pier..50 years ago! That one was stolen recently. Lets see if your Stella will be around in 50!
I grew up using Mitchell 300 reels because my father grew up using Mitchell 300 reels. The only design problem that was never fixed was the weak bail spring.
like wise but towards the early 80's there were company's making stronger springs. I still have both of mine. One of the best things were spare spools were cheap so it was easy to load up spools with different line strengths and then swap them over depending where you were fishing. Although i have them reels like the Daiwa BG are so much more enjoyable to fish with.
Have you guys tried smoke bluefish? Filet and cut out the blood lines, rub in 1:3 salt and brown sugar dry brine in the fridge and then smoke it over charcoal grill low and slow
Should have gotten a 406 Mitchell. Nearly the same weight as the Stella while still more line capacity. Or devastated both with a modern Daiwa Emblem 45, Shimano Ultegra 14000 or Penn Surfblaster 8000.
The Mitchels were the reels of choice for surf fishing in Natal South Africa amongst the Indian people. They used it to catch blue fish ( called shad there) especially. I learned to fish on a Mitchell. Towards the mid 80s, the skirted spinning reels began to make an appearance there . I remember my first skirted fishing reel was a Shakespeare, which I thought was a from Japan.
Every time I buy a modern reel, I have problems with it braking or even getting a birds nest (string tingling). My "old school" reels never have problems and if it needs repaired, i can repair it myself at cost of parts or lubricants. When sending "new school" reels to get repairs, I feel the reel costs me more money than what I paid for it.
I have a Mitchell 300 that ive had for years and still works good. I like the newer ones just because they are a lot lighter to fish with all day but definitely like both.
Sweet! I have some new gear, but my go to’s are the pen 704z for the surf or heavy piers, penn squidder (upgraded) on a 270h calstar for Bonita and yellow tail, and jigmasters/ 4/0’s dir 40 and 50 lb applications.
As in almost anything with such an extremely different price tags, you have to ask yourself if something 100 times the price is indeed 100 times better... unless you are in a competition and that little difference in actual quality can also become the difference between 1st and 2nd place. Then maybe it is justified.
I think it's like photography you can spend a lot of money but if you have no vision it doesn't make any difference on your photos only on your wallet 😂
I simply can't justify why I would need or want a $1000 fishing reel...I can get 5 complete rigs for that amount of money and catch just as many fish...because I've done it for the last 5 years. If spending a huge amount of money gives a person happiness, though, more power to 'em.
Conventional reels are all I ever use… no spinners for me… I own a few vintage ABU reels.. unused 10000c’s and they're complete & beautiful… in free spool, ... they spin forever…. Got them paired with 11’ and 12’ beavers... Here on the West Coast…. The surf is big and quite rough, .…you need distance…. But a spinner for $1,000... Not for me… for a $1,000.… I’d rather buy a 130 class Tuna reel….
Old time fisherman from the late 60s-70s till ? my number is up (getting short) surf, jetty jockey, boat, still have use Mitchell 498 manual bail (3) 1 new in box, 302 (4) 1 new in box spinners (2) Penn Sqidders conventional reels, still performing like new, all been maintained every season, just had to replace drag assemblies a couple of times since the 70s, they don't make them like they used to, rugged, easy to maintain, maybe might not be as smooth as newer reels but as long as you can bring those lunkers in, who cares !
Now this is funny to me I have a 50-year-old, Dam Quick 550 Reel (made in Germany) that I used on the ocean for 10 years as a surf & party boat rod and sat it down till I recently retired, Cleaned it up and put some new grease and oil and am happy as a lark. Watching this video took me back to wonderful memories and the happy state because the reel is still working--I do have a bunch of new reels both spinning and conventional types

I recently moved to France from Colorado where I was fishing trouts and now I am teaching myself to surfcasting... My father-in-law give me one of is old setup with a same Michell reel and a carbon fiber rod... It is heavy but I can learn surfcasting en enjoying the French coast. I like reels that I can clean and maintain the new one your using I wouldn't even buy way out of my price range normally I don't spend but maybe $100 and that would be for a combo reel and rod and most of my equipment and tackle comes from Walmart
I like the old Mitchell except the spool. The line gets caught in it all the time. My dad when he was like eight years old worked for half the summer mowing lawns to get a Mitchell 300 in the 1960's. They were awsome back then. He still has it sitting on his fishing shelf in the shop still in PE fect condition has not used it since the 1970's at least. I think it came with a spare spool back then. I had a used one in the 80's.

Both reels & rods were heavier in those days ( but that's when men went fishing ) just messing, but for heavy duty surf fishing ( 12' up rods, 498 Mitchell w/manual bail way to go ) what difference does wieght make ? since after the cast, you could really lean into them, they stay in the sand spikes most of the time, until hook up, plugging stuff a little lighter since you're doing more exercise !
We know the new, more expensive is better--but is it THAT much better? No, not at all, especially for 99 percent of what you actually use them for. Any Stella is questionable at that extreme price point---and rarely if ever--worth THAT much money. It's like so many things, you can get 99.9 percent of that quality with a GREATLY reduced price tag.
Island Beach State Park, Barnegat Inlet, can't be beat for scenery, strippers, blues, flounder, sharks off the surf, can drive up & down on the beach w/o being on top of one another, can fish all night, access drive on beach only w/4×4 & beach buggy permit, used to belong to the N.J. Beach Buggy Assoc., best times for getting my head straight, man how I miss that place, all I have now is pics, memories of late 60s till late 80s when I left Joysie !

Durability and reliability make up the baseline requirements for a reel. Old school quality on budget leave more gas money to get out and fish.

Why redesign it, if it takes only a minute to replace the Spring.
I have started using Penn Long Beach 60 reel and it will take practice before going to saltwater fishing

Back in the day left handers only had Zebcos and Baitcasters. Spinning was all right handled. Reels are so much better now.

The older Garcia reels with their lower rpms permit natural slower movement of the lures. The newer reels crank too fast.

499 and 499 PRO, both are bail-less reels. Great reels. Used to be common in Australia and here in NZ.

I havnt seen a 499 or Pro version in LH wind. Only had the RH retrieve models.
