I live in zone 5 and have grown butterfly bush for years. We get pretty harsh winters, so the butterfly bush dies back to the ground every winter. But by mid-summer it's grown back every bit to it's previous size, covered with flowers. So, don't mourn the winter die off , the shrub acts just like a perennial flower that way, even though it has woody stems.

Best all time, most helpful video EVER! Kudos to you for having the patience to carry the video through those loooong months of transition. Gosh, that was really generous and thoughtful of you; because that's what us novice gardeners need to see. Every time it got to the end of a segment I thought "Gee wouldn't it be nice to see how it turned out." And there you were with a follow-up. Sooooo helpful! Thanks very much, I'll definitely check out more of your videos! Happy gardening!

I planted those bushes last year as well. This spring they were looking dead so I called the nursery and they told me that they are like teenagers. They don’t wake up at the same time as others, just give them time, like until June!! Two out of three were indeed dead, but I’m glad at least one survived!👍

I live in Kansas City mo. We just need to be very patient each spring with butterfly bush. Try not to cut it back until you see a lot of new growth and after any chance of new frost. I have lost them after trimming down and then be hit by a late freeze only to lose the new growth and the plant. Keep the protective mulch over base as well. If you trim early stay well away from new growth and then later go back and tidy it up. Once the late spring early heat kicks in, they grow very fast from the ground. Patience my friends. Thanks for the video and showing growth results later. Outstanding.

My Pugster Blues are also two years old and I didn’t cut them back this spring because I just didn’t know what to expect. They are way bigger than I expected, and I will cut them back next year to a more manageable size. They are going to bloom beautifully and I will try to shorten them as they do, but I like not having to dead head them. Gorgeous bushes.

I bought my first butterfly bush on clearance at Lowe's the begining of the summer. It is in a large pot but I want to put it into the ground. It needs a triming and I had no idea how! Thank you for coming to my rescue!!!!! Will you please do demonstrations on over grown vincas and a caper bush or tree? I think others would be happy see demonstrations on other popular plants also. Don't be too hard on yourself I kill things all the time but a good rule of thumb is I like to feed things before I prune them that way they have enough energy to heal those wounds that's why I'm such a big fan of slow release fertilizers that I only have to put down a couple times a year. And a lot of the times when I kill something it's because it's so far gone that I'm just cutting it back in hopes that I can spark it into some new growth and sometimes it's too late.

I took a White Buddleia cutting in July 2014. It didn't grow very well because of location and competition from other plants. I moved it in Autumn 2017 to somewhere sunnier and it grew beautifully. I have it on the top left of my channel homepage, sadly it died in May 2019 due to wood rot at the base. Luckily I had already taken a cutting from this plant in 2018 when it started to grow for me. This cutting is the one I have today and it is looking very healthy.

I’m doing an experiment on my hydrangeas including the ones that bloom on old wood. Half I’m pruning in the fall and others in spring. My theory is that cutting off all the spindly little branches in fall will help the plant save water and energy for the thicker stronger branches to get through the winter. I normally get quite a bit of dieback. We’ll see. 🤔

Hey Stuart .... zone 6 .... Ive had a butterfly bush for about 8 years. Every year I pruned back pretty hard in late fall (October) in order to maintain its shape, and gradually limbed it up into a beautiful 8ft tree that canopied over that bed and was always filled with blooms. This past Spring, after nursing a broken ankle the previous Fall which meant I couldnt give it its usual pruning, I pruned it to get it ready for the new growth it would put on to control its growth....didnt want it 10-15 feet high. To my astonishment and disappointment, every long, beautiful limb dried up and not a leaf popped out ....there went my tree! Sure, its now sending out shoots from the ground once again, but Im not so sure I want to go thru all of that grooming and waiting all the years to get it back to an 8ft tree, which I prefer. What did I do wrong? Thanks kindly!
