Most people would have been arrested. Will Smith sat back in his seat, refused a request from the Academy to leave the ceremony, got his award and gave a speech where he purposefully avoided apologizing to someone he just assaulted, and then went and partied like nothing happened. You or I would have been arrested unceremoniously and booked. So not feeling terribly sorry for him. He got off easy.

Chloe is missing the point. If you are so entitled and untouchable that you can slap someone in front of a theater of people and millions on television, you deserve a lot more than being banned. I agree with you. I have acted violently to a situation which was uncharacteristic of me. I regretted my action and blessed that others were willing to show me mercy. I hope will Smith will be shown mercy. I am not a therapist but it looked to me that his slap was a cry for help. I hope he gets it. I like will and Chris and both of them were wrong. Making fun of a medical condition is cruel. Some people have said that it is not as though Jada has cancer! So insensitive. If I have rheatoid arthritis it is okay to joke about my knarly fingers? Few actors can go from television comedy to screen acting in serious roles. smith has done that marvelously, especially when playing real-life characters. He is an amazing actor.
Being amazing at one thing, however, does not immune one from terrible behavior. He deserved to be punished and the punishment should be severe. A lifetime ban would not have been out of line for what he did and how he did it.
