The pure insanity of picking a fight with Russia is beyond belief
Especially in their own backyard, in a nation that used to be a republic of the Soviet Union, and one in which the soil is pretty much soaked with the blood of Russian, Ukrainian, and other former Soviet republics during the Great Patriotic War (we call it WW II). A lot has happened in this region besides the hell of pushing back the Third Reich. Literally several hundred years of history that isn't forgotten and the West just thinks they can pull Ukraine into their orbit. It's madness. Before Russia loses Crimea, major U.S. cities will become ash and I think they really mean it. Just total madness, hubris, arrogance, and stupidity.

Even if they have read an English language history book on Russia, it's written from the view of somebody who has Russia derangement syndrome. The only way you can get a realistic history of Russia is to talk to Russians. Their history books were only translated into English back in the days of the USSR and those had obvious problems with bias. Russians have a public face and a private face and our "experts" only know the public face and they only learn what they've been telling each other about Russia for centuries. Even when somebody like Putin tells them straight out what he thinks, they assume he's lying. The West has become so used to politicians lying with every word they can't imagine that somebody with power might be honest with us. It confuses us.

I watched this entire interview yesterday on The Free Press. I can't believe they are promoting this guy. It sounds even worse today than yesterday. Repeating my comment here that I posted on TFP UA-cam channel: "We should hear all views on this extremely important issue. Now that I have listened to this interview, I can go back to opposing US funding and military aid for the war in Ukraine, a war that continues only because our government insists on escalation, risking a nuclear war. Mr. Ponomarev gave us nothing but a list of grievances...Putin bad. The American people are being sucked dry. Ukrainians are being slaughtered. Enough. Negotiate and end this...what should have happened from the beginning and everyone would be better off and ~ 500k still alive."
It sounds like he is not getting the response from actual politicians he is getting from this podcast. I haven't seen the guy platformed much and he is complaining about not getting traction with politicians. Let's hope it stays that way.
Mr Ponomarev, is not unlike those so called 'dissidents' from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Venezuala, Cuba, North Korea, China ..etc, who the US media (and government) seem to embrace wholeheartedly , holding on to every word they say against their respective countries governments, because it justifies the current bogey man status. In those respective countries, they are known as 5th columnist, and as such, glad that they no longer reside in their countries of origin.
It's silly to point at Prigozhin's protest as evidence that 5000 soldiers could conquer Moscow. Prigozhin didn't succeed, although he might not have wanted to overthrow the government and was simply trying to get some changes in the Defense establishment.
And Prigozhin already had freedom of travel inside the country, while 5000 foreign troops wouldn't make it past the border by 10 km.
One glaringly obvious thing is that Russians love Putin too. You need to have a LOT of unrest and protesting going on already by unhappy citizens to even contemplate such ideas.
The Progozhin story of insurrection was invented by the west, trying to show how hated Putin is. As you say 5,000 troops could not take Moscow.

These people watched Saving Private Ryan once too many times. There won't be a full scale invasion of Russia like in WW2. Russia will use tactical nukes if they see that an invasion is imminent. Tactical nukes will quickly escalate to strategic nukes. There won't be anything left to capture nor will there be any armies to do the capturing.

The problem is that in 1990s, Washington hoped Moscow will become yet another loyal ally, while Moscow believed that Washington will treat Russia as an equal. Unfortunately, that is not possible.
I blame Gorbachev. He should have never trusted Reagan and lies he was peddling. Russia would have been much better off if it had slowly transitioned to a capitalist country like the transformation that took place in China.

After Nazi Germany and their Soviet allies invaded Poland the Soviets invaded Finland. The poor performance of the Red Army in the Winter War convinced Hitler that the Soviets would fold quickly. Obviously he was wrong.
Hitler believed the Russian people so hated communism that they would welcome being liberated by the German army with open arms. He got that wrong they were met with the greatest resistance ever seen. The west still believes such nonsense. Russia is fighting with shovels, they are starving, they have no uniforms, morale is low, etc, etc.

Russia's war against Ukraine goes right to the heart of her national security interests. Russian leadership, with or without Putin, will prosecute the war against Ukraine to the bitter end.
A good comparison would be 1920s and 1930s, when Weimar Germany and the 3rd Reich were totally dedicated to reoccupying Danzig and Germany's other eastern territories. One regime was ostensibly a liberal democracy, the other a expansionist totalitarian state for the ages. Yet both still shared essentially the same vision of Germany's vital national interests.
