  • We've been selling daylilies for over 40 years and if we had a nickel for how many times we've heard the question, "Are daylilies invasive?" we could stop selling daylilies because we wouldn't have to work anymore!
Ken Oakes explains why people may have that common misconception and what to do about it.
You can find out more about daylilies in all shapes, sizes and colors on our website: www.oakesdaylilies.com

    ABOUT US:
Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that's been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation- including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you-with one daylily in a home garden.
    .............................
    FARM-FRESH TO YOU!
When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger - two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and produce more blooms quicker.
All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

One year... I think the twins were about to turn 3... I decided to plant a garden. Daddy gave me paper bags full of zinnia and bachelor button seeds and we got permission to dig up roadside day lilies from the nearby farmer. We also grabbed a ton of daffodils that we later discovered gave us poison ivy. Got that cleared up. We actually had these daylilies in all of our wedding flowers. Inexpensive and beautiful... that garden within 2 years was the most beautiful place I've ever er seen! I had the gardening bug and over the next 10 years I added 12 more gardens, all huge and except for 4 were basically chaos gardens. I sure miss those days because my bones don't let me garden anymore...

By the ecological definition (obviously not what you mean, but worth mentioning as many may take it that way) of invasive, yes, they are. Daylilies are native to Asia.

We were just using the term "invasive" as it refers to whether or not it will spread and take over a garden bed, which the roadside daylilies might, but the hybrid daylilies don't.

@@OakesDayliliesI gotcha, just throwing it out there for folks who might think they're a native species by your wording. Have a good one 🤙
