I'm glad I tried KG, but it wasn't exceptional. I had the brisket, lamb, kofta, ribs, and sausage. They were ok, but there are a lot of truly good places in Austin and with brisket at $34/lb you have better options. The best thing on the menu was the rice bowl.
I was in Austin recently (actually waited in line with Andy and his crew at Franklin!) and KG BBQ was the best bite of food I had there, period. Was talking to Andy and his crew and asking them other places they hit up and they all recommended KG BBQ. I had been wanting to try but forgot to include it in my itinerary, so I have Andy and the crew to thank!
That last guy, the Egyptian dude. He made me almost tear up with his genuine love for food and his culture that he blended so beautifully into the Texas BBQ he makes. This is one of the many reasons I genuinely enjoy watching his content. Another favorite is Ethan Chlebowski! Both of them have an incredible way of making even the most complex dishes approachable.
As a Texan, I greatly appreciate this video. In Texas, north south east west central, the bbq is all a little different but all good. The main things I hope hit home are 3 things: keep it simple, have good quality meat and let your meat and wood do the talking, and have good side dishes
@@danm8004 there’s 3 points. Keep it simple, quality ingredients (let them speak for themselves), and have good sides. That illusive 4th point y’all are talking about is nothing more than an expansion on point 2. Call it 2B or 2.5 if you prefer, it still boils down to 3 points.
"We're just the next step in a long process " dude absolutely loves what he does and is no doubt very good at it. We need more people that are this passionate about what they do.❤
As an Aussie, I always thought BBQ was over rated (based on what I've tried to date) but after seeing Blacks and KG BBQ, I was genuinely salivating! Andy thank you and the team for teaching me something different about BBQ!
Aussie bbq is just so basic - sausages, rissoles or lamb chops in bread and tomato sauce (maybe with coleslaw and onion). Nothing too wrong with it especially because the meat is really high grade in Aus compared to some countries, but yes it's nothing compared to Texas BBQ in terms of flavour.
@@muzikkificationI'm not familiar with ingredient availability but you should be able to try quite a few styles. Keep in mind things like that brisket are smoked in a smoker that reaches about 250°F. They use 'post' oak down there, in Canada I use alder, mesquite and sometimes a little cherry or apple...salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder. Good luck mate!
As a native one spot you missed out on was definitely Leroy and Lewis BBQ. They're a bit of a hidden gem unless your a local, so don't blame you for not knowing about that spot. The must have item on there is the Bacon Rib. Not something you can eat every week, but definitely something I would eat if I flew in to town just for it.
