Its like the dialog was written by a person that just had boat load of fortune cookies and decided to put all the "words of wisdom" inside them into the game, even if it makes no sense. 😂
It's like half the voices are doing Steve Martin's 'wild and crazy guy' voice and the other half are doing Eddie Izzard's 'Bond villain with an accent simulator stuck in his throat'
2:55 Hey with the whole former KGB agent and collapse of the Soviet Union thing in her backstory, i can assume she either was with her mom because time where rough, or she took her mom in to live with her to keep the mom safe.
I'm only a third through the video, but for all of Sofia's dominatrix looks and attitude, she maintains a legit nice and reasonable attitude and it makes me imagine an adult animated series with a similar concept to Smiling Friends, with a surreal world and simply trying to cheer up people, but it's a bunch of bondage creatures as the main characters. Like the Tainted Coil from Brütal Legend or the Cenobites being proper lifecoaches/therapists.
The sound of Gaia's rapid fireball special unlocked some core memories from my teenage years. It's right up there with Duke's "HHHHHNNNNG! Southern Cross! HHHHHNNNNG!".
Toshinden was the first game I ever played on PlayStation. I'll never forget how good the music is. It was the first time I'd ever heard a game with real instruments in the BGM.
Oh crap, my sister and I spent so many Saturdays playing Toshinden URA and this. I can't wait to see what you'll think of the voices and cutscenes! Nostalgia, here I come!
How's a woman who's working with the KGB, and lives with her mom. Is wearing a dominatrix outfit, and Sofia doing this way before Ivy from Soul Calibur. Oh my goodness the voice acting is downright a hilarious masterpiece to hear. Their phony baloney accents really brings out the hammy performance here. Did Tommy Wiseau coach them to talk like this.
From my vague knowledge of what some of the characters look like I imagined a kind of quasi-medieval setting or a Power Stone-type deal but then the text for Sofia's story started talking about the dissolution of the KGB and I was like huh wait
Thanks Matt! My favorite version is for the Saturn, the URA one with RinRin. I also think that one has my favorite bgms, too.

As much as I'd love to see Toshinden make a comeback, I find it hard to believe it could be successful. Guilty Gear and its multitude of anime-fighter-sort-a-clones already stole its thunder with amazing character designs and rock'n'roll music. Other than that, you mentioned Sofia's brown hair in the story mode cut scenes, but Duke, Fo and Kain also have wrong hair colors.
There's still this back here and it's still in the back on my neck, the back of my head, the back my mind, and it's always telling me, it's Toshinden time!
I agree with Matt. Living with your parents in your 20's, or even 30's, isn't a big deal and shouldn't be considered embarrassing. However, if you're an international spy for the now-dissolved KGB and enter fighting tournaments - as in, engaging in dangerous, potentially lethal behaviors - living with your parents might not be a good idea.
I appreciate the carousel music whenever Sofia did Aurora Revolution. ;) I've only personally played the PS1 version of the first game, so I never got to see the extra stuff the Saturn added. As for Sofia's story specifically, I thought Ohbari's Toshinden OVA fleshed that out a bit more (pun semi-intended)?
This is pure nostalgia for me. My household got the Saturn instead of the Playstation (because it was the stronger console!) I'd forgotten about this story mode until you played the clips and then it all came back. I'd absolutely be down for further Matt reactions.
I have this game! Eiji's theme is amazing, of course, but Cupido's theme is the whole entire reason they even made this version. It is SO anime and radical, the only thing that could make it better would be if someone was belting out lyrics. I ABSOLUTELY want to see Toshinden URA content please, and your reactions to the voiceovers in this game would be great as well!
Sofia still living with her mom reminds me of the mousey librarian from Tomcats: A secret dom that learned it from family. Hopefully Sofia's mom is in better shape than her 'nana. Sofia's being a brunette isn't that surprising. Lots of fighting games can't settle on their leading lady's hair color. Chun-Li regularly switches between being a brunette or having brown hair; and Mai Shirinui constantly switches from brown, brunette, redhead, and strawberry blonde.
Ha, I was just revisiting this one! What a coincidence that you'd cover Toshinden! The storyline confused and intrigued me as a lil' lad in the 90s but the answers never came...ah well. The outdated lines that wouldn't fly in 2024 and hilarious voice acting are also so 90s A.F. I'd love to see your hilarious reactions to the other characters' stories XD (Is one of those 12 people)
I would kill for a reboot of this series, if only to see what it'd look like with Obari's more refined current art style... unless he did what he did with Terry in that KOF15 promo and just drew everyone like it was the 90s again.
I only played the PS version and I seriously had never heared of Cupido before... or actually knew anyones story tbh. I need more Toshinden! gimme that sweet Sofia lore!
Matt vs the deep Toshinden Lore : Starting with Toshinden remix's glorious V.O setting up the main premise. Only to drop it in U.R.A since Master and Uranus arent there 😂😂😂
Also, in the English dub of the anime-OVA adaptation of _Battle Arena Toshinden_ , Ellis was voiced by Lisa Ortiz, whose best known as the 4Kids English voice of Amy Rose in _Sonic X_ .
Love Battle Arena Toshinden. I still own this and URA on Saturn along with 1 - 3 on PS1 (4 is terrible). Always appreciated Toshinden's lore though as it gets petty dark.
5:14 😓 OK the intro to having this French knight realizing that his opponent is a woman is like the understatement of a lifetime here. Me: “ Yes Monsieur she is a woman nothing escapes your eyes does it. And also she is a dominatrix or does her outfit not scream that from her personal trainer from soul Calibur ”
1:48 - Anything's better than Ehrgeiz 3:08 - "Go home and be a family man", I guess?..^^ 5:13 - "...I haven't seen one while living in the moma's basement..!" XD 5:43 - Yeah, I hope that person was fired indeed. 8:55 - Thank you, Master Durst))) 11:00 - SpiiiiIIIIiiiiiniiiIIIIIiiiing (c) 12:41 - D-I-S-C-O! 14:35 - MASTER!! (c) 18:22 - now THAT one was a bullcrap!...(( So, basically, you can just run and jump of the cliff at any moment of the match or what? 21:50 - that Fo Fai gives me some really bad vibes, if you know what I mean... o0
I sniff out Toshinden videos like a truffle pig. Anyways the dubbing for this one is so damn funny! I do feel this is the better Toshinden 1 if anything because of story mode!
I had the first game on the ps1 kinda wish remix was on the ps1 or some kind 1.5 better version, I also heard Japan ps1 ports had a few remix or better ports that US didn't have of the series.
In my humble opinion, when it comes to the OG _Battle Arena Toshinden_ on the original PlayStation and _BAT Remix_ on the Saturn, I would much rather play the PS1 original. Graphically, _BAT Remix_ looks pretty bad on the Saturn in comparison to its PS1 counterpart. The controls feel weird to me on the Saturn control pad, and the voice samples are a disgrace to the Saturn's theater-esque sound hardware. I will say that the cutscene and credits art from Tsukasa Kotobuki is pretty good, though. For obvious reasons, teen me at the time loved looking at Sofia, Ellis, and, to a lesser extent, Cupido, during those cutscenes, LOL. Matt, if you get a chance, you should play the Japanese version of the game to be free of the so-bad, it's-good English voice acting. Speaking of which, this game was tailor-made for voice work from such American, Canadian, and Australian voice actors and actresses like Johnny Young Bosch, Wendee Lee, Steve Blum, Janyse Jaud, and Scott McNeil. Nice video, and keep up the good work.
Its like the dialog was written by a person that just had boat load of fortune cookies and decided to put all the "words of wisdom" inside them into the game, even if it makes no sense. 😂

2:55 Hey with the whole former KGB agent and collapse of the Soviet Union thing in her backstory, i can assume she either was with her mom because time where rough, or she took her mom in to live with her to keep the mom safe.
The voice acting is EVERYTHING i hoped for!
Bro the dialog between the characters is amazing, gives a lot of personality to every encounter, modern titles should do that more.
Matt's thumbnail following the proud tradition of using Sofia as the face of any Toshinden material.
yes...... face...... that's what... I noticed first....

It's right up there with Duke's "HHHHHNNNNG! Southern Cross! HHHHHNNNNG!".
Dominatrix teaches you life lessons, the game.
"Hurt me mommy"
"Perhaps you should really ask if you had hurt yourself, psychologically, all those years ago."
"🫨"
Toshinden was the first game I ever played on PlayStation. I'll never forget how good the music is. It was the first time I'd ever heard a game with real instruments in the BGM.
The dub is worth it just for their portrayal of the characters in stereotypical accents for their nationalities
Oh crap, my sister and I spent so many Saturdays playing Toshinden URA and this. I can't wait to see what you'll think of the voices and cutscenes! Nostalgia, here I come!
Immediately after the G cup ninja scolds the knight for judging her on her appearance, she judges the next opponent on their appearance lol
Sofia isn't a ninja; she's an assassin in the form of a dominatrix.
10:29, aww here it is, the best fighting game song that only Matt McMuscles and I care about!
From what I understand, adult children still living with their parents isn't as frowned upon in the rest of the world like it is in North America.
From my vague knowledge of what some of the characters look like I imagined a kind of quasi-medieval setting or a Power Stone-type deal but then the text for Sofia's story started talking about the dissolution of the KGB and I was like huh wait
First game I played on the Playstation way back!
that forward flailing of the whip is making me crack tf up xD what a ridiculous looking animation. I love the style of this though, such nostalgia
2:30 love how just as you start riffing you realize there's a huge wall of text with no sign of stopping and start to read faster and faster.
I need more of Sofia's story. They name dropped like 156 people or things and didn't explain anything at all.
gaia be like: sofia, your story involves ur anus u.😂
URA was the one I had, didn't really know about Remix until just now. Wish I had tried it back then! Voice acting alone, I love this! 😆
Aye, I'd be down for a video of the sequel. Keep up the good work
BAT...sure that'll work, was the first Playstation game I played! And yes! The soundtrack was an absolute banger! All the feels are coming back.
The stage BGMs for Eiji, Kayin, Ellis, and Mondo from this game and its PlayStation 1 original were always my personal favorites.
2:03 Y A B O S
Thanks Matt! My favorite version is for the Saturn, the URA one with RinRin. I also think that one has my favorite bgms, too.

Would love a "Matt Reacts" to the cutscenes, like you suggested at the end of the video.
Everyone in this game sounds like a C- Jean Claude van Damme impression that occasionally drifts into Arnold.
I agree with Matt. Living with your parents in your 20's, or even 30's, isn't a big deal and shouldn't be considered embarrassing. Please, Miss Aligned was my maiden name. Call me Mrs. Projectiles.
I appreciate the carousel music whenever Sofia did Aurora Revolution. ;)

Unironically love the voice acting, I miss that quality of people who cared but weren't good.
I have this game! Eiji's theme is amazing, of course, but Cupido's theme is the whole entire reason they even made this version. It is SO anime and radical, the only thing that could make it better would be if someone was belting out lyrics.

Man, I hope it comes back
12:15 I heard "Torsion Society" and dropped everything I was doing to play it back
I was expecting another Durst sting on "gotta have faith"
Intro starts up, and Matt hits us with the subtle DSP quote. This gonna be a good video. 👍
I keep expecting Sofia to start talking about fighting moose und squirrel.
I'm Invested in the Plot.
Continue.
That's right! Toshinden is coming back!! Any year now...
Love seeing old BAT. The good was good and the bad sometimes was a different kind of good.
I would kill for a reboot of this series, if only to see what it'd look like with Obari's more refined current art style... unless he did what he did with Terry in that KOF15 promo and just drew everyone like it was the 90s again.
Gaia was such a bad ass. I want him in smash 6
I only played the PS version and I seriously had never heared of Cupido before... or actually knew anyones story tbh.
I need more Toshinden! gimme that sweet Sofia lore!
Matt vs the deep Toshinden Lore :
Starting with Toshinden remix's glorious V.O setting up the main premise.
Only to drop it in U.R.A since Master and Uranus arent there 😂😂😂
Fun fact rungo’s voice actor is the only guy who is in both the anime and the game
Also, in the English dub of the anime-OVA adaptation of _Battle Arena Toshinden_ , Ellis was voiced by Lisa Ortiz, whose best known as the 4Kids English voice of Amy Rose in _Sonic X_ .
fun fact: that's Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal and Avdol from Jojo's OVAs(and Duke was Kakyoin)
Would there be any hype at all for a new Battle Arena Toshinden game?
Gia: I'll get you next time Gadget! Next time! *cat makes angry noise*
Matt I think it would destroy your soul but I’d love to see you play through everyone’s storyline because the voice acting is just-😂
21:12 Cupido tried telling Sophia the truth of her past, but her ASMR voice put Sophia asleep before she could get anywhere.
For info, Duke is hailing from France.
🇨🇵🥖🇨🇵
Please do the Game Boy version of Toshinden, it's so good for a GB fighting game.
Love to see the second one for ps1 (had it when I was little)
They really need to bring this back! I had 2 and 3 for PlayStation 🔥
But yeah, more Toshinden please. This was so endearing.
Would love to see more reacting to the voice acting.
Sofia with brown hair looks much better and I do wish it was her regular design
The dialogue is hilarious.
My first fighting game was Battle Arena Toshinden on Game Boy, so I am one of the 12.
I never played this version.
It was certainly an interesting time when a supposedly exclusive game for Playstation was ported to the Saturn.
Well this isn't the kind of woman I was expecting Sofia to be XD
Love Battle Arena Toshinden. I still own this and URA on Saturn along with 1 - 3 on PS1 (4 is terrible). Always appreciated Toshinden's lore though as it gets petty dark.
Yes would love an URA episode. I played the s* out of them in college. Mostly because I was poor and didn't have many games but hell yea. Bring it on!
Love this game
Electric playground mention?
In 2024?
That reminds me, I need to take my old people meds.
I think we need a full episode of that voice acting. It's so bad and yet so funny, great vid😊👍
5:14 😓 OK the intro to having this French knight realizing that his opponent is a woman is like the understatement of a lifetime here.

12:41 - D-I-S-C-O!
14:35 - MASTER!! (c)
18:22 - now THAT one was a bullcrap!...(( So, basically, you can just run and jump of the cliff at any moment of the match or what?
21:50 - that Fo Fai gives me some really bad vibes, if you know what I mean... o0
The best version is the Gameboy version of this game, especially on the super Gameboy, where you get a turbo version of the game
MORE TOSHINDEN, PLEASE!!! ♥♥♥
7:23 😂😂😂 chip chip chip 🐥
The editing in this one got me laughing more than it should😂
I sniff out Toshinden videos like a truffle pig. Anyways the dubbing for this one is so damn funny! I do feel this is the better Toshinden 1 if anything because of story mode!
Writing from a golden age for sure.
So awkward I miss it.
Gotta do the Ultimate Revenge Attack Sofia Hard run, come on you can do it!
More of this please too funny.
Rungo's a straight G.
My favorite version is the Game Boy version
SATURN STAYS WINNING BABY!!
It truly was a underrated and underutilized video-game console ruined in the Western world by its own company.
I start feeling like I'm having a stroke trying to understand the dialogue and the way people talk.
I had the first game on the ps1 kinda wish remix was on the ps1 or some kind 1.5 better version,
I also heard Japan ps1 ports had a few remix or better ports
that US didn't have of the series.
I loved the early Toshinden games
...mainly the soundtrack and character designs/art, not so much the gameplay
just play all the toshinden games Matt!
siiiick gameplay
It took me a minute to realise Kayin was supposed to be Scottish. That has to be one of the worst accents I've ever heard. 😂
SuperCut! URA! MOAR STUFF! please?
Sofia is the best waifu in Battle Arena Toshinden.
Would you collab with Tommy Tallarico?!
thunderRrRRRRrR ringggg
"Perfected" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
Rungo for a money 👌
Thundaaa rrrring
Do Ellis next👍 I barley reminder this #Krazyie90s
Name a better couple than a 90s fighting game and being kind icky about female characters
Why does everyone sound like they have bad french accents.
