    On January 25th, I ran a One D&D One Shot with ‪@DnDDeepDive‬ ‪@TreantmonksTemple‬ and ‪@PackTactics‬ . The stream was a lot of fun and we got to really experience a lot of what many of the new One D&D mechanics have to offer. I give my overall impressions of the one shot, One D&D in general and some other thoughts.

    One thing I think significantly made the second fight easier was that you allowed them to all have their big concentration spells already active at the start of the fight, which removed the main drawback of those spells, aka having to spend your first round action to set them up.

      I mean, Spirit Guardians lasts 10 minutes, it's not that unusual to be able to precast it, especially in a dungeon.

    I love the old divine intervention, I like how it scales a little bit with each level you gain, I like that it’s a d100, I like that it takes a while to recharge if it succeeds because it’s so impactful. It’s one of the only features that feels like a holdover from classic dnd

    • @nyanbrox5418
      @nyanbrox5418 7 місяців тому +5

      Me too but it's also a feature that sucks, I had a 1-13 campaign and my cleric buddy never actually got to resolve this ability
      The way I see it, alot of stuff in D&D is holdovers from older editions, but some of them feel very bad as both a player and a DM

    • @jocelyngray6306
      @jocelyngray6306 7 місяців тому

      1d100, roll your level or under, is a fun mechanic that I wish existed more.

    • @thecactusman17
      @thecactusman17 7 місяців тому +3

      The problem with the old Divine Intervention is that it comes online at the point in the campaign where hoping for a reality altering thing to happen in your favor is getting more and more commonplace as players get 5th level and above spells _but also_ most campaigns are wrapping up with at most a few sessions left. So an unreliable ability that only rarely goes off just as players are coming to the end of their campaign is a huge feels bad. This is compounded even worse by the "mother may I" approach of the DM possibly desiring a different outcome than the player does.
      Old Divine Intervention is the Brutal Critical of spellcasters. If it happens that's maybe awesome, but it may instead prove to be inconsequential. And unlike Brutal Critical, it can even be harmful because it's basically a "feature" that allows you to make a request of the DM - but the DM is under no obligation to resolve it in a satisfying way.

    • @marcos2492
      @marcos2492 7 місяців тому

      Critical role campaign 2 showed me EXACTLY why the '14 version is so good

    • @nyanbrox5418
      @nyanbrox5418 7 місяців тому +4

      @marcos2492 I've seen campaign 2, they literally had 2 clerics, so the chances of a divine intervention working were double,
      Conversely in campaign 1, pyke successfully resolved divine intervention like once or twice in the entire campaign,
      Remember, even if it resolves, it is up to DM discretion as to what actually happens, so one could argue the only reason why the ability was useful in Mercer's games was because of Mercer, and if a feature needs overt DM buy in to make it useable, then it's not a good feature.

    Enjoyed this analysis of the Playtest very much. I watched the Playtest primarily due to the participation of Colby, whom I have been following for BG3 builds (I don't have anyone to play TTD&D with).
    Would very much be interested in additional DM games you would run, and appreciate your willingness to adapt to changing situations, such as the Burrowing Dragon problem. Again though, static images of players does just not cut it for me.
    Since I mostly play BG3 D&D, I have found that Movement and Alert are king, at least in the normal course of the game. Of course, other things come to the fore when moving into the more esoteric aspects of BG3. But being able to act first, move far, and never be surprised is really fun. ;)
    Only other thing I would recommend would be when doing the 'Encounter Only' type of adventure, put a little narrative into the session. Just to link everything together and provide motivation for the whole progression of the game. :)
    Thanks again for hosting this adventure.

      Thanks for the feedback and I'm really happy you enjoyed it overall! Yeah, I typically do include more narration in my games, I think I was just nervous and with a lot of things to manage it just slipped to the back of my mind but if I do something like this again, I will certainly focus on that more!
      I appreciate the kind words too. I think adaptability is a really important part of the game and being a DM in general. Things are going to happen that you can't always predict and that's half the fun :).
      I plan to touch on some BG3 content in the near future so hopefully you'll enjoy that too!

    A thing most people forget about the magic item rarity system is that there's a major/minor system to it as well. A Helm of Telepathy or Instrument of the Bards are Major items despite their uncommon rarity, compared to a Potion of Greater Healing that is also uncommon but a Minor tier.

  • @dirmusloner7963
    @dirmusloner7963 4 місяці тому

    As a veteran DM and player of Dnd since second edition, let me be crystal clear
    THERE NOT SINGLE ONE CHANGE IN ONE DND THAT I AGREE WITH.
    1. Making casters prepared caster and prepare spells from certain schools (like bard, or ranger) might solve the problem they might had BUT IT STRIPS AWAY THE IDENTITY OF THE FULL CASTERS WE KNOW. When a player decides to play a cleric, bard, druid, wizard, sorcerer, warlock they do because the versatility of choices make them excited to do so. Strict the casters prepare their spell equal to the spell slots? Huge restrictment.
    2. Making a warlock a half caster. SERIOUSLY?
    3. Druid wild shape, need to say more here?
    2. The designers and some players that say that one dnd is actually good THEY FORGOT THAT OUR GAME IS NOT I REPEAT IS NOT A VIDEO GAME IT IS. A TABLETOP RPG GAME it started as ttrpg and should remain ttrpg. With that I mean that changes that strict certain classes like video games is a no go to me. I don't want a restrict martial class not doing what it excels to do, cleave among enemies, throwing big hits, use unique abilities like battle master, I don't want a caster that is nerfed from his spells selection (banishment) to prepare spells equal his spell slots. Every player when decide to play a martial class or a spellcasting class has in his mind a certain choices to do and a concept, by restrict the choices to any player is a no go to me.
    3. I can't stand that the one dnd choices has the excuse of "balance". I don't see any balance in druid, cleric, wizard, bard, warlock, sorcerer changes, I see a huge unbalance here saying "Oh casters in 5e was too powerful let's nerf them" when that would not be the choice in first place. If we want balance in this game and make martial classes powerfull and Excell more in melee combat then we make battlemaster the default fighter. Give barbarian unique abilities, example I see ABSOLUTELY no problem in a Barbarn when raging to not only apply additional damage to his attacks BUT ALSO frighten his enemies or daze them or stunned them and AT THE SAME TIME the additional damage might be fire /cold /lightning /thunder /force damage, that barbarian might have a battle cry that cause a wisdom saving throw to enemies and in a fail save the enemy gets frozen from fear. I see no problem with monks getting extra attack right away and with bonus action after a ury of blows throw their opponent 10 ft away for additional bludgeoning damage. 8 see no problem with a paladin when barbarian and monk creating havoc in melee in an encounter with minions deciding to smite like A NO A helping them clean house as they say. I see no problem a battlemaster has an ability that spends a superiority die and get double his str bonus on damage roll or push an enemy to a range of fireball. And in that part of strong martial characters in melee I see no problem a cleric bless them and aid them throw to the enemy caster a spiritual weapon, the wizard counters Pell an incoming spell target an ally of him a warlock throw evard black tentacles to the enemies a sorcerer twin banishment (as it is now) helping the martial characters focus on cleaning house without thinking of potential big guys make their life difficult
    But all the above is my humble opinion

  • @not-a-theist8251
    @not-a-theist8251 7 місяців тому +2

    I honestly think that most classes are in a prett good place right now. Rogue needs some more love considering what all other martial classes have received and I think barbarians still need some more stuff at the higher tiers of play. Im also interested how they will handle Sorcerer subclasses. Maybe they should revert to the 2014 spell progression and give each subclass a custom spell list?
    I would have liked to see another round of playtests for these 3 things specifically but other than that they prety much nailed it

    While I get the idea about ability checks not fitting for where a save seems more intuitive I think for physical restraint based spells it might need a deeper look than just making it a save. The people/creatures you want to physically restrain are almost always the type to be proficient in that save and are frequently strong. It will go from a mid chance of success to a very low chance of success. Getting people off wisdom save spells is hard enough as is.

    Sorry Kobold, having a Radius means it's a Circle template.

    • @InsightCheck
      @InsightCheck  7 місяців тому

      We had discussed in advance and decided to use the “circles are squares” methodology as it’s just easier for everyone. The DMG says that “if an area of effects is a circle and covers at least half the square, it affects the entire square”. So by that definition, it’s already not a perfect circle. So rather than spending time figuring out if something is 50.1% of a square, we use the rule that if it touches a square, it affects the square. Hence, “circles are squares”.
      Just easier and quicker for everyone :)

    Amazing work, this is exactly the kind of real playtesting experience the community needs.
    RE weapon mastery, I think WoTC's hands are tied. They are connected to specific weapons because they don't want new players to have to parse and choose between 8 weapon mastery properties whose mechanics they don't even understand yet. Instead, new players can make the flavour choice: "My guy uses a greatsword", and Graze just comes with that.

    Honestly I think burrow mechanics should be severely slowed down. Like 1/3rd or 1/5th of ground speed as a baseline. We're not talking about walking or flying here but pushing earth around as you move through it. It's overpowered and immersion breaking.
    I think notable exception is the earth elemental that explicitly merges with stone as it moves through it, but a bulette with 40 speed/40 burrow? Honestly I think 10 burrow is more appropriate.

    • @InsightCheck
      @InsightCheck  7 місяців тому +1

      I think massively slowing down the speed is probably a really good idea. Or even limit it so it couldn’t be used in consecutive turns. There’s a lot that could be done to tone it down a bit while still keeping it interesting.

    As much as I want to not like the weird way they are doing this refresh, my current character is 100% better under the UA Playtest rules as they were last published. The new rules do mess up the level progression at lower levels, but we are at level 8 now and the new levels where features and subclasses start don’t matter anymore.

    There seemed to be a basic misunderstanding of the Deep Dragon's Burrow.
    From the basic rules: Burrow
    A monster that has a burrowing speed can use that speed to move through sand, earth, mud, or ice. A monster can’t burrow through solid rock unless it has a special trait that allows it to do so.
    Terrain looked like rock to me. Like you said, no one's perfect but the call to not have burrow was probably more in line with its rules.

    • @InsightCheck
      @InsightCheck  7 місяців тому

      I mentioned I couldn't burrow from the raised platform, that was an error. The rest was dirt. So yes, the initial burrow was a mistake.

  • @indigoblacksteel1176
    @indigoblacksteel1176 7 місяців тому +1

    Burrowing is interesting in D&D. Frankly, I think it'd be more fun if the adventurers could have followed the dragon into its own tunnel to attack it with unstable walls all around them. Sounds like an epic fight. Just having it hidden underground until it burrows out to attack does make it a lame fight. I've had similar issues in campaigns where things can come into an out of the ethereal or other planes. It feels like it unnecessarily draws out the battle, like you mentioned in your video.

    I disagree about weapon mastery being tied to characters. People have complained for years that there isn't a mechanical incentive to pick different weapons beyond personal tastes or flavor. WM is that incentive. Granted I feel they should take it a bit further and not limit effects to once per turn but it's a step in the right direction.

    • @josephpurdy8390
      @josephpurdy8390 5 місяців тому

      1e AD&D did. However, the hit modifiers only applied to enemies wearing armor. The length determined who would be struck first in melee, whenever closing rank. The space required to utilize a weapon would limit options in confined spaces. Weapon speed is not well explained, because fighters with multiple attacks and movement being involved. All this has been simplified, or removed from all WotC editions of D&D.
      There used to be many variables that changed mechanical functionality of weapons.

    Stride of the Elements seems like a magical effect to me, personally I wouldn’t allow it in an anti-magic cone.

    • @InsightCheck
      @InsightCheck  7 місяців тому +2

      What is and isn’t blocked by an anti magic field is quite specific and has even been expanded upon by Jeremy Crawford a few times.
      The long and short of it is that if an effect is described as magical, it can probably be dispelled. However, it’s also important to consider the duration of the spell. If it’s described as “instantaneous” then the effect is created by magic; but not supported by it. This is why if you get healed by Cure Wounds and then step into an Anti Magic Field, you don’t lose your hit points. You received them magically, but they are not sustained magically.
      Stride of the Elements grants flight, but is nowhere described as being “magical”. However, it relies on the “Step of the Wind” feature but that too is not described as magical. But that relies on the “Martial Discipline” feature which not only is it not described as being magical, but it explicitly states it’s granted by your “self discipline and marital training”. So with all that context, I’m totally satisfied in saying it’s not magical.

    • @muddlewait8844

      There absolutely need to be more non-magical abilities like this that martials get. The one thing I miss more than anything from 3.5 is Exceptional abilities, which *were* like these!

    • @InsightCheck

      @muddlewait8844 totally! It’s a lot of subtle word choices like just not describing the effects as magical that can help martials. At the same time though, I hope they are more explicit about it in the future books as it is a pretty nuanced determination.
