Cinetopia: DOC interviews acclaimed Japanese filmmaker, Hara Kazuo, in 2021 as part of our Framing Japan series that took place in Edinburgh at Summerhall from December 2021-March 2023. This interview aired as part of the in person screening.
Cinetopia show regular Mark Nelson talks to Hara Kazuo with translation work by Ivan Grebenshchikov.
Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 -
One of the most controversial of Hara Kazuo’s documentaries, Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 paints an uncompromising portrait of radical, bisexual activist Takeda Miyuki, who was once Hara’s lover. Through an astonishingly intimate exploration of Miyuki’s character, Extreme Private Eros reflects on the complex relationship between the filmmaker and their subject, at once unapologetically observed and critically vocal.
