How do you add automation to your mix? Or do you not use automation at all?
Would definitely like to see an advanced video!
Noted!
Love this video. I needed this badly. Awesome
👍
the range selection tool did it for me, many thanks
👍
Hello Marteen, Excellent video - easy to understand explanation and to the point.
Thanks you Connell.
Lots of great information here. Thanks so much. Really been enjoying your Spectralayers content as well!
Thanks and very nice to hear.
Very good Video. I normally handle automation mannually but it looks like the discussed topics can make my autiomation life simpler.. Thank you!
Thanks. And yes, see what is useful for your workflow.
Thank you so much for this video. Was trying to figure out how to do this & it works brilliantly!:)
Great, enjoy 👍
Really good. Thank you 🙂
Thanks and you are welcome!
Very nice video! Thank you :)
🙏👍
GOOD CONTENT FROM A GOOD TEACHER !! BLESSINGS!!!
Thank you very much!
Hi thank you for this amazing video. My question is would you advise doing all my automations on the sub groups example from the snare buss or strings buss, like all the aux Keyboard’s buss
Well ... that depends 😉. It's what the song needs. If you just need changes in in the groups as a whole, sure. If I want to increase the intensity of a section of a song I might indeed just up the volume of all group tracks a bit, maybe add some extra reverb on the most important groups etc..
But sometimes, I need something very specific on a single tracks as well, e.g. a delay throw.
I have a separate video on how I use the techniques from this video on an actual mix: ua-cam.com/video/MAkBo907jpI/v-deo.html
Simple and straightforward video. I would offer that a feature of the automation editing is the handles are nearly same as in audio event editing and VariAudio. Very helpful commonality design.
Thanks and yes that helps in U design.
Excellent. A video on automation modes and the panel would be great. Best.
That would be in the advanced one yes. So I guess I will put it on the list 😉.
Greetings from Belgium (Europe) Very useful tutorial
Greetings ... and thank you!
Hello Marteen, as usual a very informative video. Thank You. I'm still overwhelmed about the possibilities which are inside cubase for each and all functions.
Thanks. Yes there is a lot of functionality in Cubase but nobody uses everything at the same time 😉. Just use what you need and forget about the rest 😎.
@@LanewoodStudios I use everything at the same time🤓 In reality, it could be very time consuming to use all that you want to use, paradoxically against the "saving time" you may be looking for.
My new project is to have everything I want to use on my midi controllers and have pages to quick and graphically access it with no more than 2 clicks on an iPad using touchOSC which is GREAT....
@@MarcoPolux ha ha, ok then it’s a lot yes 😉. Great idea about the iPad.
Excellent video. Had no idea you could lock the vertical input by simply holding CTRL. That has been a pain in the ar*e for years, I want to use more automation but it fet so clunky.
Would definitely like to see an advanced video on this! Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I’ll put the advanced video on the list
im hitting this a little late but im a recent cubase convert. ive worked in everything else but despite a bit of a learning curve i feel cubase has the best feature set. i do mainly real instruments. rock, heavy rock trying to do some country. your vids are great. well laid out, to the point and if i can understand anyone can. thanks so much for the content.
That’s great to hear. Good luck in your Cubase journey and have fun recording/mixing!
i agree, i'm coming from as a music composer in FL Studio, and I'm more impressed with Cubase than Studio One. Will most likely switch soon
@@lostimpanis enjoy Cubase 👍
6:14 That‘s where I had problems. I selected a range of the audio in the track and it took me a while to realize that I can‘t edit the automation that way. I have to select it in the automation lane. Would be nice though if Steinberg could change this, so I can zoom in an exactly see where my cursor is in the audio waveforms while selecting a range for automation.
And I also didn’t found a possibility to use my fader to adjust all volume automation points together when write is off. When I want an automated track to be a certain amount louder, do ai really have to select all automation points and use the scale tool to get them up a certain amount?
nice. would like to see advanced video. thank you
It’s on the list 😉
Thanks. Useful video :-)
It would be wonderful having some real life examples of use, especially with VSTis :-)
Have a look at the video I'm referring to, in which I demonstrate how I use automation in a real mix project.
hahaha from boys to men der war gut danke für den content ich hab cubase als neue daw ..ich komm von reason hab viel zu lernen
😅have fun with your new DAW.
Fantastic video! I noticed this was all about volume, or at least it seemed to be. Can you do this to say, add delay to just a certain part of a track? Is it done the same way?
Thanks and yes you can automate any parameter this way.
Advanced... yes!
It’s on the list!
Great tutorial! I have cubase 12 pro and want to use the plugin Transit to make transitions, but having trouble figuring it out. I had no trouble with previous versions of cubase or nuendo, but, for some reason I'm not getting how to do it now. I also don't get as much time so it may be that... or maybe I'm just dumb. Thanks for any help.
Thanks. Transit is Andrew Huang’s plugin right? I have seen and heard about it but haven’t checked it out myself yet. So I’m afraid I can’t be of much help there. Maybe someone else can chime in.
@@LanewoodStudios Thanks for the help. Yes, Andrew Haung's plugin. There's been a lot of hype about it and I'm not sure what to think. I haven't bought it but got the demo, and have been messing with it. I can already do a lot with soft synth, real synths, and re-learned to do various automations in Cubase so I could utilize this plugin in different ways. I used to use automations a lot, but then got out of the habit, as my typical style of music is mostly rock-based, I use Cubase in a very rudimentary way. I'm not certain what I think of the Transit plugin for me, because I have so many I don't use, and just trying to figure out if I will use it. I bought some UAD plugins I like a lot. Manley preamp, La-3a compressor. They add character and I'll certainly be using them. I do like Transit, but it may not be one I use very often. I don't know yet. Thank you for the help with automations and all of your tutorials. I watch them and they've helped me a lot.
In the manual W says shortcut for Write Automation, when I hit the key it says not available. How does it work?
Hi, thanks a lot for the video !! One question: why is it only possible to compress automation data (automation event data) on either left or right corner. Especially annoying (except I'm missing out sth) if you make automation rides over a whole track and then want to scale down your ambitious finger moves alltogether. I mean, you could then compress on the left and right corner equally, but it doesn't show a value on how much you compress either?
You could use trim, see my video on advanced automation from this week.
@@LanewoodStudios I watched that one before this one ;-) Well, yes, in certain cases, but it almost seems as if they 'forgot' to implement the 'compression' option for the 'scale vertically' function. I'll write to Steinberg, maybe they could add it for another release...
@@foxytv4896 ah ok. Are you sure it’s not in there when grabbing top middle and pushing alt at the same time? Can’t remember now.
Can you automate a value of a plugin?
Yes you can!
what tool do you use to highlight your cursour with the yellow spotlight?
It's actually pretty old: www.autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=78701
Awesome thank you
@@19Stride you're welcome!
how can i change the automation type from ramp to steps?
I don't think you can. The curve type is determined by the parameter type that you're automating. This is what the Cubase manual says about that:
*Ramp curves*
_Ramp curves are created for any parameter that generates continuous multiple values, such as fader or encoder movements._
*Step curves*
_Step curves are created for on/off parameters, such as mute._
@@LanewoodStudios ohh, alright! I thoughthat since it is possible to change it in the midi modulations it would be possible in the automation aswell. Thank you for the response:)
@Searly 👍
Is your color and theme the default theme? It's very easy on the eyes.
Never changed it consciously so I assume so 😁.
@@LanewoodStudios Thanks for the reply!!
@@jclokwork 👍
Can I add "Width" to automation panel in Cubase like in Reaper?
Well if width is a control on a stereo widener plugin then you can add an automation lane and automation events on that lane yes.
@@LanewoodStudios ok and if without any plugin? Can I create and add this option to automation panel?
@@rolsound then I don’t know where the parameter Width is coming from. As far as I know it is not a standard control on the Cubase channel strip for example. But if it is, you can add automation data for it. By the way, the automation panel is something else. Check my follow-up video to this one for explanation of this more advanced feature.
@@LanewoodStudios thanks!
I'm trying to bypass a soundtoys plugin, but it's not working for automation...
Try the bypass/enable of cubase or otherwise the bypass of the plugin itself?
so....what is automation what are all the things doing to the track like what changes ?
I try to explain that around 0:40 into the video. For a more extensive description check: www.izotope.com/en/learn/what-is-mix-automation.html
I know the point wasn't to hear the song but why use copywritten music as an example if you're going to mute it. I need to hear the difference
Ok I’ll try to consider that next time 👍
What I see is that the fader did not go back to its original position. So Cubase 12 still has that HORRIFIC flaw of not allowing the fader to return to start when using touch automation? Has to be the only Daw on the market that can’t do this.
Checkout the follow-up video on advanced automation in which I dive into the various modes and how they work in Cubase.
@@LanewoodStudios Thank you. Ok I checked out your advanced video and In that video the fader did move back to its original position when performing touch automation but there were already dots drawn in the automation lane. So what I want to know is if you can select touch automation, and then just automate from your controller WITHOUT needing to draw ✍️ dots in the automation lane?
@@richiefamus8778 In that case the automation value stays at the position that you released the fader at because there is no value already present after that point. But I guess you could return the fader back to the value you started at.
Sorry I had to stop this video, my brain have trouble to process your thish with the thiS, let’s fix it, if you have problem with the S then add an eq and cut some of the 3K and add some of the 6k and above maybe if needed, if not then stop useing a deesser .
Sorry you had to stop because of the sibilance. I've made some changes in more recent video, perhaps they sound better to you.
