I tried playing disco elysium, spent 30 minutes making my character, turned the light on, left the light on, then permanently died. Might play it again someday
41:00 i agree the book moments are usually pretty over the top, but i liked the few moments where the characters were like "that sounds great, but it probably wouldn't work for (this reason)." imo the whole point is that the book utopia wasn't actually a real utopia at all, and that there is no utopia, just a world that everyone tries their best to make as kind as possible. that's why the ending was so cathartic to me; seeing these characters have such big ideas and then actually work hard to fulfill them through political and societal reform was very satisfying also paladin
I’ve been playing FFVII Rebirth on and off for the past year (couldn’t take my PS5 to college lol) and the longer I sit with it, the more I appreciate it. Yeah it’s not perfect, the multiverse/Zack shit does nothing except kill the pacing and confuse me, but there’s so much love poured into every facet of this game. The music is a literal symphony of different emotions and tones, the characters all have so much personality and their relationships all feel real and entertaining, and the environments are on another level. Every single town is so intricately crafted and detailed that they make me want to look through every nook and cranny. Very few games make me actively imagine what it would feel like to live in their environments when I’m not playing, but Rebirth did that for me.
Shadow Generations is unironically _the best_ game in the series. Even if you're not a Sonic fan, I recommend picking it up. It is on Nintendo levels of polish, something you can't always say for Sega.
I always enjoy watching your reviews. It really feels like you played through the whole games and appreciate every single thing that makes and breaks them instead of just comenting the most superficial and obvious thing that they are good at.
I think every best of list is what they played (often what was popular enough to cover). I don't think reviewers played half the games that got like a 80+ review average
Dying at 31:01 when you said a bottom-tier FF party member is at least as good as a top-tier Xenoblade character. This is why I respect you, proper gaming paladin.
I used to think Shadow was overly edgy and tacky “and he kinda was” but ever since I started getting into the takeover and seeing his recent appearances, I finally understood it
That’s crazy I also started playing disco elysium this year. It’s become one of my favorites tbh I just love point and click RPGs, good art and good writing..
As someone who also played a paladin in BG3, doing it all yourself and letting the party just run after you is so real. Finally a game that makes busted ass 5e paladin fun and not something your DM inexplicably decides he needs to kill you all over existing at the table that approved all the character sheets for. Doing all those big ass smites rules. Somehow at the end of the game my little fella had 90' speed and I still don't know how it happened, but it was glorious to start every fight by sprinting across the map and nuking the biggest guy on it out of existence. Rogue Trader, which I started at the veryyyy end of 2024, can have similar energy when you really stack the party with movement abilities. Also fun! I think I didn't actually play a ton of new games in 2024, so I don't think I have a good favorite that wouldn't be Owlcat's questionably constructed Pathfinder: Kingmaker yet again or the one gacha game with good enough writing that I felt compelled to show up for it, Limbus Company. I feel like these don't really count.
Square Enix has always been weird about sharing their IP's and especially Final Fantasy, that's why for the longest time Cloud had no content aside from himself until Sephiroth dropped in Smash Ultimate, and the list goes on and on, I suspect we might see Cloud, Hero and or Sora at some point but it's also becoming less and less likely every update the game receives.
just chiming in on the why black doom brings you to radical highway. My guess its that either the weird wony timey wimey stuff has him trapped there but we see him in other places so maybe not. The other idea I came up with is that thats where shadow first woke up from his chamber in SA2 making it the peak part of shadow's whole "I want revenge on the whole planet" phase and maybe black doom keeps taking him there so that he recalls those feelings
Unicorn Overlord... Still the best I've played in 2024. So refreshing ! Thanks for mentioning Disco Elysium too. Two of the greatest gaming experiences I had in years !
bro what do u MEAN you tried to do the act 2 nightsong fight at level FIVE. i was at least level 7 or 8 bro im so sorry 😭. on my second playthrough i didn't even bother i just killed that guy right when i met him so i wouldn't have to do it lmaooo
Aw man, too bad FF7 Rebirth didn't land for you... I'm more of an FF old-head. I really don't want "FF7 again but pretty". We had a lot of similar remakes in the past years, and they were all "perfectly fine".... FF7 back then was far more than "perfectly fine" though. I'm really glad they tried out a few things here, and "fixed" a few weird things from the original, which just makes way more sense in a modern game. The gang fought and beat giant monsters! It's good Palmer is using a huge robot now instead of 1 chubby guy vs. 3 JRPG heroes lol (the pacing right after Barret's scene is really off though here!) And that ending! If you dug into the multi-layered world stuff it's sort of a pretty cruel cliffhanger of what exactly happened there
I think BG3 is one of those games which gets better in a second playthrough I quit my 1st playthrough at the start of act 3, picked it up again a few patches later and it was incredibly better when I knew the general direction of what to do, had better inventory discipline, ... a thing not really mentioned often but the ambient sound design is really good, I accidentally turned off the music for my whole 2nd playthrough and never got bored while exploring my 3rd playthrough was even better still
Yeah FFVII REBIRTH is by far a fantastic game but it’s also the most BS frustrating final fantasy games of all time. I kinda had mixed feelings with the side content the most and some boss fights in this game.
I gotta yap too, cause I finally got to get myself to buy Persona 5R cause it was like 26€ during a steam sale and I am incredibly happy. It's just so consistently good!
Best game I played in 2024 was easily A Plague Tale. Peak story, always throwing new mechanics at you, and it really makes you care about the characters a lot. (Paladin)
Splatoon: yeah it could use a tone shift to reach a wider audience. It helps if you turn off the online comments. FF7R games - Love them both, padding and all. They give you a feeling of hanging out with the party so much better than other RPGs. On Aeriths death, I think it was a business decision. I think they were afraid that if they gave a conclusive answer to what happened, many players would feel they have seen the answer to their biggest question and skip part 3. This way, you're left angry and confused and thus more anxious for real closure, so you have to play part 3. Yeah from an artistic angle, from an entertainment angle, it was bad. But from a business angle it was probably the right choice. Here is what makes me sad though. Whether she be dead or alive somehow it seems clear she won't be with the party in part 3, at least at the start. That makes me sad because one of the biggest things I enjoyed about the first 2 games was her interactions with the other characters. I think they could have written a whole new ending like she lives but Cloud has his mental snap here and now you have to try to bring him back in part 3. They hyped up the fact that things can go different now but then they barely changed a thing. It would have been a lot more gripping to do a big twist.
I think they will show a 1:1 scene of Aerith's death in VII part 3. I think Cloud is just in denial about her death and is even more delusional than before.
38:10 I gotta say Kingdom Hearts is no longer a Playstation exclusive as of Kingdom Hearts The Story So Far, those collections have since been released on Steam and on Xbox

Dude, the "Everyone you met along the way helps you out at the final battle" is what Mass Effect 3 should have been. Instead it's all just a numerical pass/fail tally. lol.
Its funny because like for sure these games are in order of worst to best but with the descriptions and ratings i wasn't so sure. I really need to make a PALADIN in Baldurs Gate III.
Agreed on a lot of parts, especially with FF7 Remake. It's frustrating with how bloated it was by trying to stretch the midgae section of the original, and how bad the extra things are. They tried to be smart and subversive with the "the ghosts force the narrative in the direction so things can't change." But it falls flat on its face. To me, what they should have done is kept the length of the original midgar. So like 5-10 hours of events, introduce the fucky spirits, but then do a time loop thing at the end of midgar where you go back and the spirits aren't there, completely changing the story. Then idk you go back a third time and fix the timeline or do something more with those spirits. But what they did was add 20 hours of anime grunting instead
