@@meowth9245 The Testament has so much passion. It's my second favorite of theirs overall, but The Red River and Under a Clear Blue Sky are some of the best songs they have ever made.
I feel like every SW album with Tommy has a particular quality that just draws me in:
Mercy Falls is very compelling and the 30 minute sequence at the middle (starting with Fall in Line) has some of the most beautiful song evolutions I have ever heard.
Waiting in the Wings is endlessly charming. There's just something about it, some itch that it scratches. Maybe it's the lyrics too, but the arrangements in it are different from their other material and feel very special.
The Great Escape is my personal favorite album of all time, alongside Ayreon's 01011001. It's just so beautifully and amazingly crafted and it feels like their best work on a technical pespective, and Tommy's singing. It captures what makes them so good a band, complex yet accessible, progressive but very melody focused. Every song is spectactular and the 30 min title track is probably my favorite of theirs.
Tiara I will admit I don't enjoy as much as the others. I still play it now and again and it's very unique sounding. It's in a weird spot for me. I would rate it an 7.5 / 8, which is a pretty damn good record on its own, but compared to their other work which are 9s at least it falls a little flat, for me, personally. I do know people who love it to death.
And the Testament is a very emotional album. There's so much passion seeping thorugh every song. Very intricately crafted and it just feels like a lot of love was poured into making that record. I feel only TGE surpasses it.
TL,DR: The Testament is fantastic and only TGE is better in my opinion, by just a little bit.

@@erusean8492 totally agree there. the great escape was actually my no. 1 favorite album until i got into the testament so... ;) the testament is virtually flawless as far as im concerned. the great escape is close to that, but i cant help but feel they stretched out that longtrack a bit too much.... so in my books, the testament would be a 5/5 and the great escape a 4.5/5. needless to say, tommy evolved quite a bit as a singer in those 10 years and sounds even better on the testament (the best he has sounded yet IMO)

This interview shows the strength of character Tommy has as a person. Humble guy that knows he's got a finely fashioned instrument, but doesn't wave it around like a fool. A depth of understanding about what it takes to be a creative person and a vision that helps the process.
Navigating the questions about being the "new person" how he does is from a place of respect and patience that is natural too. It's a difficult place to be as the person stepping up to take over where a master of the craft once was, made more problematic through the opinions of people that never consider the stresses and pains it may have upon the person doing the stepping up because they have been brought in by the rest of the contributing members of the group. That this guy didn't have previous knowledge of Kamelot beyond what he had, that he also hadn't been in the industry on their level at the volume they are and he still fell into place so well is saying something. It's pretty cool how he respects the art and focuses on the resulting piece with what goes into it instead of chasing the things that are what he can get from it.
Double respect for doing what very few people in his particular position actually does, taking the fans' established viewpoint into how he approached the position, learning a different way of creating a piece instead of trying to change the way it's presented to suit his comfort zone, the guy grew into a different version of himself. Which is always a good way to approach life. I had a feeling he was a good dude from the handful of things that the interwebs had about him.
Thanks for the 20 years you put into the wellbeing of other people. It's a hard job mentally and physically at times, and 20 years is a long time.
(Also, I'm glad to hear ya boy spent his summer jammin' out to some Mariah. That dude literally trained and educated himself by mentoring himself through one of the most vocally talented people that has been known to sing sounds.) No wonder he's got that wikked falsetto.

Imitation is so important in the early stages of learning singing. No singer did not listen to other singers when they started.
Thankfully, Tommy got great advice from that opera singer) that saved his concert, and from his wife's vocal coach who helped him to know his voice type and how to more efficiently approach his vocals sustainably (which guides composition, song choice, pitch planning, breath management, and so on).

Me and my friends waited outside the show building and he came out to us, shaked his hand with everyone and introduced himself to us. I was like "OMG what just happend! " The best think is that during the concert he recognized me and other girls ( we were right in front of the stage) and he came to me with the mic and asked me to count to three in polish. There is even a video so I have a proof that I didn't imagine that :)

I now love Seventh Wonder, but I first discovered Tommy through Kamelot. I really enjoyed Kamelot's album 'The Black Halo' when I was in high school, but I never ended up seeing them live with Roy. I love Roy's singing, so when I got a ticket to see Kamelot live for my first time in 2012, shortly after Tommy joined the band, I was willing to give him a chance, but was kind of bummed that I wouldn't get to see Roy. From the moment Tommy took the stage that night, he won me over. His stage presence, his enthusiasm, and his amazing voice were incredible that night. I left the venue feeling that I had seen an amazing show and that Kamelot had found an amazing storyteller in Tommy (Nightwish opened for Kamelot that night, it was one of Annette's last shows with the band, she was awesome, they were touring for Imaginarium, which is my favorite album of theirs, and suffice it to say both bands were phenomenal... so overall that was just an incredible concert). Then a few years after that show I discovered 'Mercy Falls' and yeah, Tommy has definitely become one of my favorite singers. It's good to see in this interview that he also is such a kind and genuine person.
P.S.-My mom passed away in January 2019 and the night before she passed, I played her the 'Farewell Suite' of three songs from 'Tiara' (her name is Terri, so it seemed fitting somehow, and she and I enjoyed bands like Dream Theater as well as sci-fit movies together). I will always be grateful to Tommy that his heartfelt beautiful singing in those songs was something I was able to share during my mom's last night of her life. She and I loved listening to music together and she loved Tommy's voice too!

I appreciate Elizabeth's sensitivity and care in interviewing Tommy who's obviously not someone that is so comfortable talking about himself o. This allows him to share nuggets you might not have otherwise gotten from him.
To the point about not listening to his voice while practicing or performing, I remember a tenor operatic Maestro on a Zoom seminar I attended saying that you don't focus on how your voice sounds to you to know if it's correct, but rather you focus on the proper execution of the technique. Let the technique be accurate and the sound will follow.
Minimizing the sound in your ears would definitely help with that if you knew how to approach the technique properly.

I saw Tommy with Kamelot live in St Louis last weekend. I would have never guessed he was an introvert. An absolute masterclass showman, he appeared very comfortable on stage and sounded identical live to his recorded works. During one song, he even lifted a small kid from the front row onto the stage with one arm WHILE SINGING and there were no grunts, strain, etc. The dude's an Olympian. He sang to him, the kids face lit up ear to ear and the bassist gave him his guitar pick mid-performance and switched to his fingers and had to go get another pick from the side. If anyone has a chance to see this band live, take it. It's truly an experience.

I'm only halfway through (I'll listen to the rest during tomorrow morning's workout), but I wanted to point out what I thought was a missed opportunity. Tommy cited James LaBrie one of his earliest metal influences, and then later on you got into the discussion of straw singing. Remember the interview with LaBrie and how the straw/water contraption was also such a big thing for him both in recovering his voice after the severe food poisoning incident and in maintaining his vocal health as he's aged. Anyway, loving this interview so far, I just wish you'd made that connection too and related James' story back to Tommy for his reaction.

So nice of Tommy to mention Mike Mills. Indeed he has an incredible range, but he's also one of the best lyricists I know and an exceptional multi-instrumentalist :). Aand for the amount of talent he has he really doesn't get enough publicity. If you want to hear his own material, check out his 'band/comic artist duo' Toehider :). He's also in my top 3 for tea time interviews, along with Anneke van Giersbergen and Floor Jansen, but we're spoiled already with the past tea time interviews. These give insights that normally never happen with regular interviews. So thanks for what you have done already Elizabeth and good luck with the last part of your pregnancy :).

It wasn't until Ayreon that I really started appreciating Tommy's voice. (Arjen really shined a spotlight on an underrated singer there!)
I love how you respectfully and patiently wait for him to find his words (conversational English when it's not your first language can be tough!) and only help when he really can't find them. A lot of times, trying to help can have the opposite effect, but not when speaking to you :)
I also love how your tea time interviews are so long, it really provides the opportunity to delve deeper into things, making it fly by in a relative instant.
I can't wait for the next interview with undoubtedly one more of my favourite vocalists, although I can imagine you wanting to focus some more on your child as you're nearing the end of your pregnancy and the start of your lives together. Wishing you and your family all the best!

This was great. I didn't have an opportunity to attend a Kamelot show until they were doing their tour between Roy and Tommy, when Fabio Leon was the interim. The next time Kamelot was in Seattle was their first tour after Tommy had joined and they were opening for Nightwish, which also happened to be the show Nightwish introduced Floor Jansen as their interim vocalist (at the time). I remember leaving the show elated, thinking, "This feels right for both of them." I haven't missed a Kamelot show in Seattle since then and the one tour they couldn't get a Seattle stop on the bill I happened to be in London when they were playing later that year, so it all worked out.
One thing that I'm finding really interesting is his aversion to his own voice, which is the complete opposite of the approach Yannis Popadopoulos detailed in his interview where he uses a small recorder and plays things back right away.

What a wonderful night this turned out to be. I love Tommy and all his work, and of course I love Elizabeth 🙂 Your interviews are so down to earth and amazing in every way. Please keep them coming! Anyway, as a long time kamelot/tommy fan, I still did not know anything about this amazing singer and frontman. What a treat. To hear things like came from pop (Mariah) and listening to things like SA (god bless that band), it just gives me a new take on his performance. And The stuff about things sounding so free, and Tommy himself feels trapped in his voice... I would never guess, coz his voice sounds so... Free! 🙂 Anyhow... Great interview, great video, love it, looking forward to hearing more (music, interviews, reactions)!

Outstanding interview Elizabeth !!. Very relaxed, full of good questions, with a perfect sense of music composition and playing. And what can I say about Tommy. He is not only a huge singer, he also writes very well, he acts every lyric, but also he had to fit Roy´s shoes, and he did it perfectly. No one is Roy, but he kept that magic, with his own style.
I raise my glass of wine for Kamelot, Seventh Wonder, Roy, and Tommy, and Elizabeth for sharing this amazing interview

Pretty cool to have Tommy on! Always like his voice. I learned about extroverts/introverts in University, and itt made so much sense to me. I played alot of music in front of people but I am very much an introvert, its nice to see that not all singers are extroverted
