When I was teaching, I was DEADLY real about the career of a gigging drummer to my students. I told them 99.5% of gigging drummers probably don’t have $500 in their checking account. Woody was adamant to his band members about having a teaching degree as a back up, and that was 30 years ago when there were W-A-Y more ‘live’ music venue than today. Luckily, I’m retired military (U.S. Army Band) but I know many cats who’ve played with “name” bands who are doing gigs for $150 or less and they’re all old farts like me who do NOT have a military pension. Today, I don’t even feel like gigging anymore because the crumbs they throw just isn’t worth it. To me, it’s an INSULT to any musician that acquired the skill necessary to do a job well - and in the end, NOBODY gives a F. So, I’ve pivoted to a career that will PAY me REAL money (mid-SIX FIGURES) than what I can EVER make as a musician/drummer…and guess what? It’s actually EASIER than being proficient on the drums. F crazy, man.

Kinda crazy, moving my $5000 drum kit to make $100-$500 bucks.

yeah ...we are all pretty much appalled at our situation. Its the problem of a business when the participants have a great love for what they do. Capitalistic tendencies would be to diminish the monetary value because people want to do it. A tough thing to wrap the mind around.

    $600 a week? I don't even put my shoes on for $600.

I just ran the numbers that you gave for stadium gigs & at $1200.00 a week that's $171.42 per day at 7 days a week, and at $1500.00 a week that's $214.28 per day at 7 days a week. Not much according to today's cost of living, also if you need to buy new drum heads, sticks, or replace a piece of hardware...well that's up to you to cover the cost, it's almost like playing for free! Talk about selling yourself short!! lol

Hi Phil, great advice! Post Covid, in Canada, local gigs/ and Corporate events which I made a fantastic living at have just vanished. Great players are playing for nothing in stupid bars etc. As a result, I don'nt have as many shows, because I know my worth, and would rather stop playing than go down down the rabbit hole. Please have and set some standards fellow musicians.

PS Not interacting with some arrogant diva singer is a blessing in disguise, I mean why would you want to hang with someone that thinks only about $$$ and their looks? Oh also what about Union vs Non Union gigs? Is it worth joining the Union or is it no longer an issue?

I live in Vegas and Cirque seems to be one of the only really high paying steady gigs left here unless you are fortunate enough to have a production show gig. Would you recommend staying far away from Cirque gigs? But overall the pay has gone down for most gigs here. I got to Sub on a small Country show on the Strip a few yrs back and the pay was way to low for what was expected of us.
