So it goes like this. You do your 3yrs years of Degree program. Then you do a Masters degree. Now you are ready to begin to understand how great Phil is. It's all a bit 'Grasshopper, from Kung Fu', if you are old enough to remember ! Thanks Master Phil .
I can't believe you provide this content for free, Phil. Your channel is consistently giving out info that university music students pay tens of thousands of dollars for.
Thank you Ryan. Funny enough...many times they don't even get this information. The people teaching at most of those places don't have a clue about how to explain this or even that it exists. A piece of paper is their justification for the positions they hold and the students suffer for it. The politics of Music universities turns my stomach and I have seen the most inept people that can't even play hold tenured positions. LOL. Don't get me started haha. Hope you are well buddy and many greetings from Vietnam!
@@philmaturanodrums That's one of the reasons why I always tune in to this channel: not only do I get guidance here that I can't find pretty much anywhere else on UA-cam, but I always feel like your commitment to the instrument comes from a very sincere place. I never get the feeling that it's just about money or fame, or whatever. I can tell you're really about the music. One of these days, when I get my sons in school, get a kit, and get some actual free time, I'm gunna sign up for your online lessons and take a deep dive in to straight-ahead and salsa. Those two styles specifically.
@@ryancox5097 I appreciate you bro. Thank you for these kind words. I hope you can get back to playing soon. I'll be here for you when you are ready. :-) By the way...Fame is only problems. We will rap about this someday. Hugs from Vietnam!
This idea is absolutely fantastic. I studied jazz drumming at Music college in the early 2000's. Not once did any of my teachers explain how to approach fast tempos in the jazz context. The only useful thing was think slow phrasing while playing fast. Thanks so much for this informative lesson.
This is a huge "AH-HA" moment I just received watching your video closely while counting and reading the notation/Drum Sheet Notes you provided at the very beginning of this video... This is exactly what I need to work on so I can play closer to how Elvin Jones plays and to play along with your Drumming. Both of you change up intervals of rhythms within a piece of music then go back to the original so you're still keeping time when you play but it sounds like you're changing time ! All I know is I have to go practice what you're doing in this video lesson 😅Thanks so much ❤
Hi bratha thank you for writing. Yeah....sadly drumming pedagogy in the last 20 years has been in the toilet with the advent of social media. We have lost the tradition of being apprentices. This type of information is so dense that the only way to get access to it was to hang for years with a teacher / mentor /player. This has almost disappeared in favor of UA-cam hacks showing every time more stick twirling - licks - and double bass drum inane useless material. Whatever you need regarding this info let me know. Here for you bro. All the best.
@@philmaturanodrums I appreciate you taking the time to actually answer the comments. This probably is one of the more complex lessons I've seen but you made digestible. Thanks for this, man! Will definitely dive into the three bar cycle concepts more. Very grateful!

So it's mixing the versions of phrases rather than just riding one or two till they resolve , eg jumping phrases than treating them as an exercise, while playing full loops I'm still at the stage of getting lost mid count , I'm resolving at 3s and ending up short .I need to let these bed on to the point I can take my mind off the phrase and be more aware where the hell I'm at lol
I’ve been basically a rock drummer for 40 years. I know where the pocket is the most of the time feels pretty good but after all these years, it’s the first time I really understood what the hell jazz drummer was thinking First time in my life, I get it! pretty sweet. I like to work on some of those permutations .looks really fun no doubt about it. I think I’m digging it!! Thank You Much!
Hi Joaquin! Yeah this is pretty much hidden information that many don't want to talk about or simply don't have the ability to teach. Just one of those things.
Hi Alex! Thanks for writing. I would say its more like the natural rhythmic language of this music. There are many cycles one can use but the 3 bar cycle is the most common. All the best to you :-)
@@octopusshrimp Ah well....hope to see you there one day. As you can imagine it took years to compile this info. What you see here is a good example and very usefull but of course...the tip of the iceberg. Many greetings to you and thanks for writing. :-)

This concept also works well with 5s, it just takes 5 bars to resolve instead of 3.
