American Truck Simulator - How to back up a trailer pt. 2

- Tired of taking the "Easy option" at ZERO exp? This is a supplement to part 1. In the first video, we went over parking in tight quarters. In this video, it is more of a basic approach, with some tips from a gaming standpoint, that should help you get these things parked!
To whom this concerns; I wish you could see the gratitude and expression on my face right now! I've been trying now for three months to get backing up a tractor trailer, I pretty much gave up, until this morning - I decided to try again, so I accidentally found this video, and watched it, and then again.... This tutorial is spectacular, and helped me understand, at the very least, the light bulb finally came on!! Thank you for this awesome tutorial!!!!!
When you turned your wheels to the right, your trailer went to the left. When you turn your wheels to the left, your trailer went to the right. Remember, your trailer will go the OPPOSITE direction the way you turn your wheels
!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks solely to you and your vids I now never choose the easy parking. Your demonstration and explanation is spot on.
I love playing this game thanks for sharing this! I have Euro truck sim as well but the American Truck Sim touches home cause one I live in AZ and love seeing how ATS did a awesome job with Arizona. Plus I am considering on getting my CDL so I can do this job instead of the retail rut job I am in.
thank you very much sr. I spend around 20 minutes trying to park in medium dificulty and quit, I'll study your video to try to get all hard parkings 😊... tx again!
Hopefully it helped.
You helped me so much! I've been able to back trailers up for 3 months now! Thank you so much
😂 me to
This is a WONDERFUL tutorial, First Crew! Very well done and you really went into great detail with all steps. Thank you very much for the effort you put into this!
Thanks for all the tips. I've tried to play so many times and always got discouraged, but this time I found your video and I was able to park the trailer in 1 minute when before I struggled for over 10 minutes and gave up. Seriously, Thank You!
When I was in the military we had shooting range, and 88m truck driving simulators (which were both sooooo much fun but I digress lol) I think trucking schools should invest in simulators. Our AIT trucking simulator put us in real life driving situations. I think it would greatly help with backing for new truckers. Bc of course backing is the hardest part for most.
love it I needed this to step up my backing game in the real world. no matter what anyone says, if you matter this game it'll help understand the concept in real life and it takes away the confusion and second guessing, especially when others are watching.
65 Inch Trucker
Hey dude you make it look complicated, I've barely been driving real life truck for few months now and especially in ats it's not that hard to get in and out of a tight spot, but I think it's good having this kinda tutorials for people that don't know how to do it, keep up the good work
I made it look complicated on purpose. If I just knock it out, nobody will learn anything.
The First Crew Yup that's true though, and you did a good job
Thx.
Factz
@@thefirstcrew4194 I tried the next day and improved by over 200% .... How do you get the 3rd person camera to rotate all around the truck? Thanks so much for these gifts of Gold!
Wow! this is really a Great video for the Beginners. Although I am not a beginner but I really didn't get the right technique or maneuver to back up properly coz during the training in driving school, the Instructors don't really go in minute details coz the school want the Instructors to just get the students pass the Road test. So, we just follow exactly how we are spoon fed. Thanks again for a simple and easy to follow video.
Tenzin Woeser merely a simple basic physics, don’t see it as too complicated
Hey man, hope life has been treating you well. Thank you for this video series. I'd love to see you finish off the instructional series if you have time since your videos have been the most informative, and easy to follow. Thanks again for all the help!
this is probably the most helpful serieson backing that I have seen, good job
Thank ya, sir!
@Hello John Culbreth, How are you doing?
lmao, best part of this video is the "hey no offense but...try doing this blindside with no hours and empty stomach and a full bladder" supertrucker comments. listen to the damn video. great video btw.
Marash Kola
No hours and full bladder 🙇🏻♂️
Time to use emergency flashers 🤣🤣🤣
Ya he is amaiing. I have been drivivng for 31 years and I am so glad he is out there to teach me new things..
Wonder what he could tell me when we had n cell phones
OMG I AM LMFO..
@@jeffreyomier7836 I got backon the road last year. In my days a driver dod not run out of hours, LOL A truck stop sold all the hours wee needed lol.
I have already got the hang of it from your last video but this helped me for some of the more difficult ones.
I have tried to back the trailer up to the docks in first person view but the mirror is so far away that I am forced to go into 3ed person view. I drove over the road for 6 years Setup has always been the hardest thing for me and I have been in some pretty tight spots that I almost didn't get out of ! I appreciate you showing these guys the basics. I hope they appreciate your knowledge !
I deal with single trailer movements all the time lately and I will learn the dynamics of maneuvering a B double combination. That second trailer has more scope to go out of sight from the cab
Thank you! As long as the tool is too easy, overcomplicating things is what left to present the useful info!
For realism players like me, I use the 3rd person camera to simulate getting out and looking. Then continue to back up in the cab view.
I agree with that. However, this is a tutorial. I can't show people stuff from the cab. I have a few let's plays where it's all done in first person.
mee too, cause in real life u wont have that view only view is in the cab and as u said getting out and look but backing up its in the cab, and fagviano does that check him out I thnki it jack fagviano it is

Im getting ready for cdl driving school and this video is heaven sent. Ty so much. I have this game so u can bet i will be practicing my skills lol
my dad drive truck my whole life i evn went with him on the road harder then it looks,.... and iv never drive an 18 wheeler but i have backed up plenty of trailers in my time..... the most exciting prt of this game is backing em up....
I agree! Thanks for the reply.
It's sad you dont continue an instructional series. I'd definitely watch it, it would be great to know more theoretical stuff about trucks. Hope you'll do it eventually :)
I will. Problem is work went balls to the wall lately.
The First Crew hope you'll find some time soon :)
But you know half of the things he says is wrong
I love the tutorial videos on backing up on different and difficult angles
Jesus, I've been driving a year and don't think I'd want to do a real life version of that first yard with a sleeper!
LOL. Good to see a trucker that can admit the truth!
FirebirdCamaro1220 after a year of driving, I'd BETTER get that done right.
Thats pretty sad lol, its really waaaaay easier than he made it seem, you can get out of there in one solid motion, he just didnt do it right
Whe you were dropping in the yard with the blindside. With that much room it's easiest to pull past the parking area until your landing gear is lined up. Then crank hard left, essentially doing about 75% of a u-turn. The back of your trailer will be lined up with the spot and you can do a straight back.
So I watched your video last night and applied it to my drop off in this game and it helped a lot thanks
You're welcome!
Another amazing video I've watched another one of yours and it helps me a lot
Glad to hear it!
The First Crew thanks again I still have trouble with the Walmart drop where you pull in and immediately go left and have to park against the building
You are very good. Thank you!
I bought this game on steam I'm a truck driver and I can back up perfectly in a real life situation but this game completely stumps me when it comes to backing up
justenmatthew dead ass I dont watch so many fucking videos and did exactly that
justenmatthew hey what is the name of the game???
tony snow american truck simulator
Real life trucker aswell... Backing up is hard because you cant see like you would in real life. It´s much harder to determine distances and depth in this game compared to real life.
Are u using a steering wheel or keyboard, cuz keyboards are tricky, my favourite thing to do with a steering wheel in the cab is hold the wheel at the 6 o'clock angle (the bottom) and turn the wheel in the direction I want the trailer to go, it basically reverses the direction of your truck when you back up, meaning that the trailer will cooperate (THE TRUCK PUSHES THE TRAILER WITH THE 5TH WHEEL IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION)
I drove a flatbed for 4 months and I never have to go backwards so I never learned 😁
wait, dont you need a license to level up for flatbed loads?
@@japhetanciado7999 yes everyone need a CDL license, but in school you don't receive a lot of practice backing the semi truck and once you are in the road you drive forward all the time
@@juanmontenegro2025 U didn't park at truck stops?
I don’t believe it
@@benjamingollan4746 it’s true. Flat beds rarely back into places.
Done some truckin myself...good job there bro. If that trailer was fully loaded those tyres would have popped hehe. Useful vid tho, thanks.
Being a truck driver, this was the most frustrating thing I’ve ever watched.
Maybe you shouldn't be watching backing tutorials for a video game then.
@@GodprefersDiesels I just so happened to stumble across it and decided to watch it.
Backing the trailers that the game sticks you with, that have the tandems all the way to the rear, THOSE are a nightmare. The thing just refuses to turn.
And playing this game, I do stay in the cab, driving it like a real truck. I also do the "GOAL" by stopping poppin the brakes and using 2 to pan around, since we cant get out of the truck.
Also, how would you get out of that spot if there were 53' trailers beside you? There is a Walbert DC in Sacramento in this game, that has very short headroom to pull out. I picked a job that was sammiched between to 53s......I was like, and you expect me to get out of here how!? Then to complete the nightmare, there was a friggin light pole in the way. Yes, I smacked the fence, I pussed out and just restarted and took a different job haha.
You are an awesome teacher!
+enerdhil Thanks. :)
In the World, a blind side backing is very difficult , you just cant see anything.
I recommend you all try out Scania Truck Simulator. It's made by SCS but it's made for practicing parking and all kinds of tough situations. It's a lot of fun too.
I don't even drive trucks, But I find it easy to back up the trailer....
Turn left to turn right and right to turn left easy
Great job!
That was great job and skilled videos thanks my man
Nice video. I usually use 3rd person view. I will try to do the whole thing from the driver's seat. I see some UA-camrs do that.
I noticed your air supply lines are not attached, would you still be able to jack knife the trailer like this In confined spaces? This don’t look like it would work in a realistic scenario IMO
The time it takes him to demonstrate three times is how long it takes me to park
New Subscriber ~~ Yes, that truck is better looking than the green one (previous video). LOL
@Hello Larry Fick, How are you doing?
If the air hoses were on their they would be starched to the max trying to get out of the first spot
Good job buddy on designing this video! What app did you use to do that?
How different is a pickup truck and 5th wheel trailer, just cab clearance? Any vids with a pickup and 5th wheel? Any sims for that? Awesome videos BTW!
@Hello Dean Desmarais, How are you doing?
Good work man.Good teacher.Keep it up MAN.
Thanks!
You are so smart... Very Easy to learn from..Thank you
I appreciate what you're doing. Thank you. You're the Greatest!
Right back at ya!
Di Eric uj
My problem is the trailer doesn't back in the direction I want it to go. no matter which arrow key I press left or right it just goes in the same direction.
Isn't backing a little harder from inside the cab and real world consequences for hitting anything?
Keep up making the series, is very interresting. You seem to know a bit about trucks, do or have you worked with them? Got curious ;)
+lurvenlove I will. Thank you. Glad you think so.
I used to work on them. Thank God I've gotten away from that, lol. At the time, I was on call 24/7 for $9.00 per hour. Screw that. I also worked on them in the Marine Corps. There were some differences here and there, but the gist was the same.
I’m gonna go get my CDL now thank you
It be cool if this was optional for your cdl test.
Man I'm not a truck driver and know that's was a nightmare lol... I drive this American truck simulator and man I zip in and out of these places...
If this had been real life those pallets would have been scattered all over hell and back and you'd be lucky to get out without picking up a few nails. lol!
very good thanks for the illustration
hey, could you do a few examples with the articulated trailers from the heavy cargo dlc pack? I'm really having a hard time parking those.
It would be so much fun if SCS could adapt their scripting and add multi-joint configurations like super B's, wagons, and jeeps. People pull their hair out with one trailer, let's add one more lol.
Cool video im studying to get my CDL. Nice Kenworth
My dads been a truck driver for 30+ years I’ve gone to work with him since I was 8 years old and still do to this day and I’m 25 years old now
It would help us new drivers still practicing IF you would tell us which real direction the trailer goes when you turn wheels, not say "when I turn my wheels to the left, the trailer goes to the left." Wrong. Turn wheels left, trailer goes to the right.Other than that confusion, it's good to hear your theory to solidify my thoughts being correct as I anticipate what you do next!
What you're talking about works in real life. In this game, you're looking at the grille of your truck in that particular instance, and steering with a steering wheel in your living room while watching a TV. So everything is backwards. Instead of sitting in the truck, you're looking at it. So left and right is backwards to normal. This is a tutorial for a video game. It's crazy how many fresh super truckers with a flip flop on the dash and an automatic transmission think this is a tutorial for real life.
I wouldn't want to turn always wide as if it might stretch out the air lines
Good stuff, keep it up!
+Paizon Ryker Thanks, man! I will.
OMFG PMSL :):) great tips mate !
thank you my friend
you are a good teacher
what system are you running and where can I get this simulator you make it look easy and fun cool vids need more.
Excellent video....great algorithm.
I want that game
Isn't backing up in the 3rd person cheating? In a real truck the driver would be inside the truck using either the mirrors or sticking his/her head out the window. Blind side is hard, because in this game the area to back into is not very clear from inside the truck by the time the trailer is straight enough to start backing up? Would be nice in first person view or from inside the truck that we could zoom the mirrors so you can see where you are backing.
@Hello Pete_Hine_of_PA, How are you doing?
Okay, I'm not too bad at backing up A trailer. But now.... I've got two trailers on the side of an Eddie's. The comment about some people feeling its impossible is ringing large in my mind right now. What makes it hard is that the back trailer is really a wagon with a turning front axle! Hope someone has some good tips. Good video here though.
you should always try to straight line back if you can, if you can then it's your right hand side and if all fails back to your left hand side and that's called blind side back
I am aware of that. This tutorial illustrates how maneuverable these trucks are. If I showed backing up after straightening out for half a mile, what would that teach anyone? How would they conquer the difficult spots in the game, where there is no room to straighten up? This video is for helping people that don't do this for a living back up in a video game. This is not for real life. Although the physics do apply.
Good thing there weren't airlines, they would probably be ripped off from that jack knife Lol wow
Adam Oliva really? I’m a driver and I jackknife it pretty good when I pull U-turns and they’re always fine
when you turn the steering wheel to the left, your trailer goes to the right. if you turn the wheel to the right, the trailer moves to the left.
You misunderstood what I meant. This tip was for complete noobs. As long as you are facing the grille of the truck, move the steering wheel/keyboard to the right, and the rear of the trailer will go right, and vice versa.
You are correct in normal circumstances, but if you're facing the grille, it is all backwards. This tip is for the people that are literally ready to give up trying to back up in the game.
Ok, I'm sorry I misunderstood you
@@thefirstcrew4194 us noobs are in the truck, trying to figure out which way we turn as we back up. Thanks for the clarification.
Costello: "let me know when I can back up".
Abbott: "O.K., go ahead"
Costello: "yeha Bauta yeeoww"!
In Eurotruck I can do this no problem with one hand tied to my back and both eyes closed, but in American Truck I just can't even get close to a halfassed parking job, I even had to turn off air breaks cause I ended up deplesting the tanks three times per try
How did you park it on the dock being a tight space I like to see it .
Im just starting out. Thank you so much. 👍
i have no idea whats with the long comments but nice video
Now you need to back in double/triple trailer when the dlc comes out.
Lol they don't let you.
What type of game controller are you using?
@Hello Jeff Slocum, How are you doing?
Thank you so much!
and yes you backed toward your blind side every time. even though you made it look easy
Thanks? This is for a video game, to teach people who don't do this how to back up, before they give up trying. I'm not trying to teach fundamentals for real life.
I've park all of my trailers except doubles and triples
The game doesn't let you do the "where do you need it?" with anything more than a single. Doubles and triples just get the "just put it here for now" option.
However, I would like to see how he would reverse into the place he got the trailer out from.
Where can I buy this game! Lol i need this set up for the holidays 🎉
thanks to you
Im confused i thought when you steer to the right trailer goes to the opposite which would be left...thats in real life. Is it different just for this gane or am i not understanding yiur terminology.
Oh my gosh ! How many years have you been driving ,you should have a school to teach rookies like me .
lol what happened at 25:29??? trailer heading towards spot then suddenly the video cuts to it being in the spot.
cool vid... definitely gonna use it to my advantage... keep em up man..
+C Lo Steam Will do. Glad you liked it. Hope it helps.
Yeah man... finally found someone a little more down to earth so to speak in the UA-cam thing... lol... keep it up and I see this going places
Thanks for the kind words. I have big plans for the channel, and I am wide open to suggestions too.
TBH I couldn't tell you... I have watched a lot of vids but never made my own so no clue... I did wanna start but I just got my rig and it's using a shitty cpu so no go for now

Okay. Well, if you think of anything in the future, drop me a line!
🤣🤣🤣,Who is this guy? Funny! Talking! I like it thought! (Maybe,Naahh!) Hahahaha! ( few reserve, reverse,OMG,)😂😂

Damn pulling out of that first lot looks like a nightmare. Ive never seen a Shipper with such a cramped area.
ChaotiX you should see the industrial estates in England, 90 degree bends with cars lining the sides of the road
Thanks
I tried looking for that game on my iPhone XR what’s the name of it beside American truck simulator? I know they’re different ones but which one is the one on here that you’re showing us? Please respond back thanks
Wish you still did videos they very good youtube content
