As many 009 layouts seem to end up with really sharp curves and challenging gradients, the Ffestiniog Fairlies ought to be the most ideal heavy duty steam locos for such conditions. From my experience as an active modeller back in the 1970s, loco mechanisms, derailments and coupling failures were regular challenges with 009. Back then the best mechanisms came from either Minitrix or Fleischmann, with Minitrains as an honourable runner up. British outline locos were not available 'ready to run' but could be either kit built or scratch built.
