The ‘metal’ painting of whistles etc is absolutely fantastic! My son is a wargammer and high quality metal paints have been around for years It’s confounded me that model railway manufacturers haven’t used such products when seeking a convincing finish So well done Bachman
Indeed, I would recommend any model railroader to walk into a Warhammer store and pick up some gold and brass paints to touch up bells and whistles with.
@@naguoning i imported a Kato E5 shinkansen startset with extra track and a set of carriages from japan into europe, still came out cheaper than the cheapest startset with just an oval and a small steam engine by an European manufacturer, their prices are insane
@@tripel7470 Missing my point. I don't dispute that Kato are cheaper in Japan (and Taiwan). My point is they are NOT cheap in China (other than HK). In fact quite rare there too. I was making the point because it was suggested they are cheap in Japan and China. In Japan yes, in China no.
PECO's OO9 rolling stock is actually pretty decent, with the coaches having proper seating (some of them even have removeable roofs to allow one to fit passengers in them). The Bachmann Thomas & Friends OO9 coaches, on the other hand, are hollow with no seats. They both aren't cheap and are pretty much entirely plastic (which seems to be the norm for this scale).
Amusingly, the slow speed performance with the slightly jerky movement almost perfectly matches a video of Britomart trying to start a heavy train at the Ffestiniog Railway. I doubt that is deliberate though. What a gorgeous model though and bodes well for the NG7 range...
The narrow gauge was always my favourite part of both the Thomas show when i was younger, and the railway series books when I got older. Always wanted to do a OOn9 layout but i dont really have room for a second layout without getting creative.
Thanks for reviewing this model Sam, it's amazing. I'd be interested to hear what you think of the Mainline Hunslet, it has some nice features too. I can recommend the Bachmann Bogie Covered Goods Wagons as well.
Alice was painted originally painted in Indian Red. As all locos at Bala, this runs loco runs extremely well in real life. The pipe and fitting on the side is a steam pipe, possibly the blower pipe; I had a drive of her in 2017 but can't remember. I know on Maid Marian, there is a fitting on the brass bit for connecting an airline for blowing up the fire when lighting up! The real Alice Class are all slightly different. You'll have to get down there and have a look. I have been a Society member since 1991 and a working volunteer for 10 years in the 1990s, firing, driving etc. You need to visit!!!
Yes, I was a member at Bala for some time in the late 90s/early 00s, and enjoyed firing (and very occasionally driving) Holy War and Maid Marian. During the 1999 Gala w/e, I fired the lovely Una (ex Pen-yr-Orsedd, I think), and may well treat myself to the upcoming Bachmann 7mm version...
@@ianjeffery6744 we must have overlapped. I started within a week of Bob SHELL. Plenty of good days, and good nights at Barbies and at the Eagles Pub!!!
I am super impressed by the quality displayed here. Its really quite a marvel for whats been achieved especially considering the size. I primarily work with brass locomotives which are known for their exceptional detail, what i think modern models have over 60s and 70s brass is when it comes to the printed or etched detail. I have a 1996 made Pennsylvania Railroad L1s from Railworks LTD mafe by Yulim in Korea, and it comes with a builders plate that is made 2mm by 1mm and is actually etched and painted and very clearly (with a magnifying glass) says: Juniata Shops; L1s; 1915. Its exceptional.
A great review and i agree with you, that 009 should be listed with other 00 scale models. The Kato/Peco small England model is not indicative of all Kato N scale steam engines, they are however more delicate around the valve gear. One of the better options from Kato is Their powered chassis my particular favorite is the 109, an 0-4-0 which looks like a diesel, or gas mechanical chassis, where you can use your own bodies. A couple years ago I sent you a picture of my 009 0-4-0t, it should be on your Wall of fame somewhere. It was made from a Kato 109 And a resin 3D printed body that just snapped into place and it had tram covers to disguise the fact that it didn't have side rods. And it was based on a real locomotive from Switzerland that still runs. You should look at some of the different powered chassis available from Kato, Tomix, and others. I'll try to find links and send them to your email address.
I cannot stop reading Hunslet as Hulett. I'm close enough to Ohio that I've been able to hear more about the Hulett ore unloaders, some massive old machines of the Great Lakes that I sadly report have two surviving examples that are headed for the scrapyard. A beautiful set of machines I figure this comment section would be happy to learn about, and maybe someone out there could save them. Anyways best wishes to ya Sam. Always fun watching your reviews, especially of more obscure engines like this.
Britomart, a Quarry Hunslet in blue with an enclosed cab, was my first 009 loco. She performed just like this when new, and only really got worse until I gave her a service about a month ago. I much prefer my Small England, Princess, to both my Bachmann locos (Britomart and the GVT Baldwin). It runs better, smoother, quieter, and can haul more.
Great review Sam, as always! Looks amazing, and I think this Bachmann Hunslet is a far far better-detailed loco than the Kato/Peco one! I really am looking forward to the next 009 review!
Thanks for looking at a 009 loco once again. And at a Bachmann one too! They may be pricey but Bachmann has made some quality 009 locos. Hope you review more 009 from Bachmann. Their Double-Fairlies are incredible.
There is a photo of me driving Alice, which was very enjoyable. Unfortunately I missed out on the model but did manage to get 2 of the other 009 Hunslets. I guess I'll have to get NG7 Alice!
This is amazing!! I have some N Gauge track going spare, and have been thinking of getting into OO9, and after seeing THIS I think I will!! From what I hear the Mainline Hunslets and Double Fairlie are also fantastic! In terms of rolling stock I’d say just get some more stuff from Bachmann, from what I’ve seen and heard the Kato/Peco stuff isn’t really as good… Re: price; I think one thing you need to remember is that it is this scale is extremely niche.
I absolutely love these little locos, both in 1:1 scale and OO9. Bachmann have really done a great job with these models, and I'm looking forward to seeing the NG7 versions. As I understand it, these models were a bit of a passion project from one of the senior staff at Bachmann, and I think that shows. Hopefully Bachmann will release further version of these Hunslets, especially of the other Dinorwic Locos.
10:48 - That's pipework to the blower, usually hidden under boiler cladding or plumbed through the boiler on mainline/standard gauge locos, the whistle is on the steam turret, next to the safety valves at 10:06. Great review, and pleased to see you looking at 009, even if this example is from the quarry on the wrong side of the hill for my tastes!😉 Just joking, yes I'm a Penrhyn person foremost, but I love visiting Dinorwig.
Hi Sam. The pipe that goes into the smokebox is to the blower. The whistle which goes peep peep is very prominent on top of the firebox not far from the driver. You can't learn what nobody tells you can you.
Glad you liked it, the tooling variations are immense, Bachmann at their best. And yes I've seen sound and light fitted loco's it all has to go in the cab, so you need a carefully placed crew. You just need a trip to Modelu to get yourself and Chloe scanned to crew your loco
Bachmann’s Baldwin 10-12-D class would make a nice addition to your collection. It is an amazing little model with astonishing detail! But, the only problem I noticed is that it tends to struggle on gradients if you’re not going at the right speed. That could just be my model with the problem
Oh i have a few even smaller ones! brought a few H0f - 006? - (still the same 1/87 scale but on Z gauge - 6.5mm - tracks) stuff, when i visited the Nümberg fair in the late 2010's. Its more of just a gimmick, but looks good on a layout. If you interested in more narrow gauge stuff I highly recommend Liliput's H0e models, those are good value for money with high details, Roco's H0e line is OK-ish, but not as good and more expensive, and the other brands are even more costly and u don't get that more for your money (yes I'm looking at u Bemo).
Worth looking at the Mainline Hunslet and the Double Fairlie from Bachmann. I’ve got the sound fitted double Fairlie, which I run on analogue as you can with these. The slow crawl is amazing!
This shows that when Bachmann sets their minds to it, they can make a quality locomotive with out breaking the consumer’s pocketbook. Nice review. I hope, when Bachmann does another release of them, the 4-4-0 American we’ll see some improvements. Bachmann has announced a new n scale “Roger’s” 4-6-0 release for late December, let’s see how they do with this one.
One of these days, I'm curious to see your reactions to the T&F narrow gauge characters because w/ Sir Handel and Duncan being the next lot to be released, it'll be interesting to see your thoughts on how they modeled Skarloey, Rheneas, Peter Sam, and Rusty being closely based on their Talyllyn Railway counterparts...
Alice is really hard to obtain. Bachmann have none in stock. I asked if they plan on producing more, they may do at some point in time but all down to production slots was the answer.
As someone who's run HOe Continental scale double 009 I would never consider not using electrofrog points on locos this small it will certainly stop the loco from stalling on the points which I never seem to have much of an issue with. Good job from Bachmann though
These trains in real life were used on reasonably steep gradients in the quarries were they not so a test on a slight gradient could of been included maybe. Very impressive model. Have you ever travelled on the actual Ffestiniog line, Sam? Amazing little steam engines and a great day out. 👍
*ANOTHER OO9 SCALE REVIEW!!!!!!!* This is Epic. I wonder when Sam’sTrains will make an Official OO9 Gauge Layout to go with his OO layout? It doesn’t have to be super huge, and it could be Removable. Also, I recommend maybe getting OO9 scale RollingStock.
for 009 rolling stock, I suggest you take a look at Peco's 4-wheel coaches and slate wagons. Bachmann also makes some similar slate wagons so it would be nice to compare the two.
I love the 009 range, unfortunately I don't have a layout it fits with, although it comes from an era I'm a fan off, and the Welsh slate scene, gives you so much opportunity you build around. And maybe I one day may decide on a shelf layout, my fingers are itching toward that. And the brilliance of 009, rather than TT (sorry TT fans this is my opinion) you can combine it with 00 if you wish, and it fits for people with very tight places. I only wish for one day we see a small broad gauge range, than the 1/76 scale would finely be complete. Nice review as ever ,enjoyed it very much, and it really is tempting me to do a bit of 009 in the future…
Hi Sam. Thanks for the review. Would be nice if a driver figure was also included for the open cab. Guess that the driver was also the fireman on such a small loco. Maybe a nice job in the spring/summer but must of been hell standing on an open footplate halfway up a mountain in the middle the winter in the good old Welsh rain with the wind howling around your ears and seemingly no place to even sit down. Look forward to you reviewing the upcoming Bachmann NG7 scale version when it is released.
Bala Lake have number of these running, if you go August Bank holiday weekend you can see all of them in action with a few guest engines in their Gala.
Bachmann had managed to put a DCC socket in this engine, wow ! It's a subminiature type, like the one I have for the Graham Farish class 03 I have from them. For the rest, wow too ! Bachmann has everything right there, and the quality matches the price. On this engine, the only thing not screwed is the customer ! For OO9 buffs, it's a must have ! You makes me want to buy one, you know ? By the way, if you are interested by a 3D printing project, the Kato chassis of the small England locomotive is available for GBP 58 at Rails of Sheffield.
Great review! I have been considering picking one of these up and trying my hand at installing DCC/Sound with a keep alive. Basically it all goes in the open cab, and crew figures hide everything from the side.
They're fantastic models and once they've got some miles under their belt I can confirm that the performance really is good. Look perfect with a small rake of slate wagons or V skip wagons. Another great 009 loco I think you will definitely enjoy it the Baldwin 10-12-D another fantastic model with excellent detail and a great mechanism. The double Fairlie isn't to bad but not worth £200 and the large hunslets are good but have issues regarding the mechanism Looking forward to More 009 reviews from you.
Yeah it definitely improved as it ran - fantastic little design! I'll definitely look into more of this OO9 stuff by Bachmann! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
These are great runners some of my favourite locos, I found the pickups can do with being slightly pressed out more so more pressure on the wheels leps with running alot, and keeping the wheels as clean as possible, also at least 1hr rin in one direction and 1hr in another
Oh sweet, you've got the same 2 OO-9 Locos I have. I really enjoy both of them. As stated by others there is a larger price gap in many other countries, including here in Australia.
Wonder if they well be better if you use DCC? Narrow gauge is not really my cup of tea, but it is good to see you doing reviews of these products. In the past I would have only seen kit built narrow gauge at shows, so RTR is a great idea, and I do hope it does well for Bachmann. I am impressed with the level of detail on this model, the metal name plates and builder's plates are a nice extra to have been included, ... look forward to seeing some narrow gauge slate wagons etc to go with this loco...
Lovely little engine - just like the real things, which are delightful beasties (I've had the privilege of firing and occasionally driving some of them). Hopefully, the forthcoming 7mm scale Hunslets from Bachmann will be just as good, or even better. I wish Bachmann would try their hand at some 3 foot gauge prototypes, such as the Isle of Man Railway's Beyer Peacock 240Ts...that really would be something to look forward to!
Because of OO9's only recent boom in popularity you'll have a hard time finding suitable rolling stock go with your Quarry Hunslet as most of it will still be in kit form. Bachmann do however, produce a few Dinorwic wagons to go with their Huslets. You'll want to go for the ones with side-planking rather than the flatbeds. Thanks for the great content, Tom
What a coincidence I was at Bala lake at the weekend. Couldn't squeeze in a ride but drove past alongside the line and briefly stopped to wave at the crew and passengers. Maid Marion was pulling the train rather than Alice though.
Find the review strange. Whilst I agree with the gearing statements it is quick. I have three different versions of this loco however all are DCC fitted which could explain the consistency of maintaining a crawl and overall performance. I also currently use insulfrog points and haven’t experienced this issue either although I agree with your statement that electrofrog will make it guaranteed to be more consistent.
A decent looking engine overall, as I have said before wouldn’t mind getting a bit of 009 into my collection at some point, have to say though bachmann do a great job on their 009 products from the other reviews of 009 items they have made.
Hi. Just a daft question if okay. I understand that these small wheel base locomotives may stall on dead frog points. However, is the dead frog the size of the locomotive wheel base or larger? If so, yes I’d understand they would stall. However if the locomotive has just one axle touching live track at any time it shouldn’t stall. Can you please confirm the length of the dead frog section and the wheel base of this lovely locomotive. Cheers. Dave.
Ive always found it kind of funny how the difference between UK and US Narrow gauge railroads. UK narrow gauges also have narrow loading gauge making their locos and rolling stock small, but in the US we have narrow gauge rails with standard loading gauges so we had "full size" locos on narrow track.
Yes they seemed have this idea that it's a smaller gauge so therefore the engine must be smaller too. Take the cape gauge in South Africa or 3'6" and their locos tower over British standard gauge locos. For the Alice class they had no cab sides or roof because there was very low tunnels in the quarry and because it rains a lot in Wales the crews got wet. The Alice class with cab side and roof have been fitted in preservation with some of today's people not as hardy as people from past times.
I would be interested in you trying a sound fitted mainline hunslet or double fairlie. Might also be nice to compare some Bachmann and Peco rolling stock.
I feel like tiny wheelbase 0-4-0s like this would benefit from at least one additional pickup shoe per rail, maybe hidden on the bottom of the cylinders.
Very cute and small. I love it. Keep being awesome my friend and ur trains are always the best. U never disappoint. I might get one of these to at some point when I get a n scale train set
Hi Sam enjoyed the video, I’ve got one of the hunslets an mine was the same took a while to bed in. Have you seen the kato chassis with the 3D printed body’s on you can paint yourself?
Cute little thing Sam. It depends of course. Everything can be fabulous but if performance is only so so, then for us that factor would be of high weight. A beauty queen is nice but a loco easily stalling will be annoying quite soon. Internals and running quality of Kato and the German/Austrian brands are just superior in terms of engineering, precision and manufacturing. In the end, a loco running well is what matters most.
This Quarry Hunslet locomotive from Bachmann is an outstanding model because of its top notch quality Sam. I have a suggesting of which 009 scale model you can review. The Mainline Hunslets and the Hunslets from the Ffestiniog Railway.
Don't beat yourself up these things happen luckily no harm was done. My friend once had a repair done at Formula 1 by the professional team, they didn't tighten up the wheel nuts and he lost a wheel on the way home

The bachmann skarloey is an excellent 009 loco, and the skarloey railway rolling stock is fantastic as well
Never been interested in OO9 but after seeing this babe I am looking for a corner to place a little shunting layout.
If you like narrow gauge, try the Lionheart Lynton and Barnstaple 0-16.5 scale Manning Wardle 2-6-2T. They're awesome!
You should try doing a review on the double fairlie Sam, it's really a great model.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Finally a review on the Quarry hunslet Sam, lol
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Thanks as always Sam!
For a 009 piece of rolling stock, I suggest you check out Bachman’s covered bogey vans… I was pleasantly impressed with mine
The double Fairlie isn't to bad but not worth £200 and the large hunslets are good but have issues regarding the mechanism
Looking forward to More 009 reviews from you.
Yeah it definitely improved as it ran - fantastic little design! I'll definitely look into more of this OO9 stuff by Bachmann!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
These are great runners some of my favourite locos, I found the pickups can do with being slightly pressed out more so more pressure on the wheels leps with running alot, and keeping the wheels as clean as possible, also at least 1hr rin in one direction and 1hr in another
They are incredible - and absolutely, that's a good idea if it's struggling!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Out of curiosity, do you an on trying one of the Bachmann NG7 quarry hunslets when they come out as well?
Lovely little engine - just like the real things, which are delightful beasties (I've had the privilege of firing and occasionally driving some of them). Hopefully, the forthcoming 7mm scale Hunslets from Bachmann will be just as good, or even better. I wish Bachmann would try their hand at some 3 foot gauge prototypes, such as the Isle of Man Railway's Beyer Peacock 240Ts...that really would be something to look forward to!
Note: Many of Kato's models from across the pond are really worth trying, I'd love to see you review some of those
You should take a look at the bachmann mainline hunslets. Similar but also different. Especially if you get a tender version of Linda or Blanche.
Another fantastic review from you Sam 😃👍🏿
Analogue servo control to compensate for friction and inertial in the forward path would be the solution to smooth low speed running.
I’ve been waiting for this video for years!!!! How did you get one because I was informed that Bachmann are no longer producing these.
Thanks for the great content,
Tom
Yeah that's true - Bachmann have some lovely slate wagons which I'm hoping to try!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Alice is so small, I think it’s cute. Nice review, friend!
What a coincidence I was at Bala lake at the weekend. Couldn't squeeze in a ride but drove past alongside the line and briefly stopped to wave at the crew and passengers. Maid Marion was pulling the train rather than Alice though.
Ahh fantastic - yeah I've seen photos of that engine too - would love to visit!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, if it's not too much of a bother, please could you review the bachmann skarloey?
Great video Sam. I must say that that is a loco that is clearly crying out to have a crew fitted.
Modelu3d do crew suitable for this loco.
watching this makes me more excited for the upcoming bachmann talyllyn model
I never thought I'd ever say this about a steam loco, but it really is CUTE!
haha it really is!! :D
To be fair to the British narrow gauge locomotives, they aren't as top-heavy.
You should check out the Bachmann Thomas and Friends HO narrow gauge line. This way, you can get some rolling stock
The couplings are in NEM pockets the same as N gauge so it is possible to fit different couplings
Yeah it does say the couplings are NEM online!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I would be interested in you trying a sound fitted mainline hunslet or double fairlie.
Might also be nice to compare some Bachmann and Peco rolling stock.
Definitely reminds a lot of us Thomas and Railway Series fans of Skarloey, but with his cab removed.
Kato are well known in North America for smooth reliable mechanisms in all scales.
Bug boxes! They are fantastic little coaches. I may have to get some OO9 stuff soon to stick on my layout. Thx for the review :)
I feel like tiny wheelbase 0-4-0s like this would benefit from at least one additional pickup shoe per rail, maybe hidden on the bottom of the cylinders.
I absolutely adore this little model, and i'd love to get my hands on one but I can't find one for sale anywhere!
Be interested to see how Bachmann's earlier narrow gauge HO9/HOe Thomas The Tank Engine series compares, eg Talyllyn/Skarloey.
looked on the Bachmann Europe web site and did not find this, also nothing under £200.
3D print challenge - N scale to 009 conversion coupler to allow for rolling stock.
Very impressive little loco that one.
Awesome video Sam's trains 😊
Sam can you please stop refusing to answer me. I feel very hurt because of you for not answering me. Plus, it is also very rude.
Super impressive little model which looks will be getting. Thanks for the great review.
Thanks a lot Michael - that sounds great!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam sometimes I Think you could try some of the DCC locos with the decoders fitted to see the difference in the running
Nice that your doing some 009 videos!
Don't beat yourself up these things happen luckily no harm was done.
My friend once had a repair done at Formula 1 by the professional team, they didn't tighten up the wheel nuts and he lost a wheel on the way home
Get yourself a DCC controller and buy a sound fitted Double Fairlie, you won’t be disappointed. Absolutely incredible models.
are you going to add any details to the layout
