First time i knew of palmetto bugs: i was a teen living in Memphis, TN. I _heard_ something in the walk-in attic next to my room. _Thought, _"Maybe a mouse."_
Listening closely to hear which direction the mouse would scurry when it heard me, i very quietly went to the attic door, stood very still for a minute, then flung the door open with one hand while flipping the light switch with the other.
    _No scurrying._
    _Also: _*_no mouse._*
But standing on the shared wall, was a 4" long cockroach! Utterly unconcerned with the light or my presence.
My mother had a Thing about roaches and i had only ever seen them camping or on late-night kitchen raids at a sleep over. _Never_ one in our house.
And never one that didn't head for the darkness when a light came on.
And this single insect was bigger than all those other _puny_ roaches *_combined_* -- kinda like it was making up for all the years i'd never seen one in my mother's house.
I had _heard_ this thing walking up the other side of the drywall...
We watched each other for a couple of seconds. Then i bent my leg up to pull my house shoe off.
And it flew straight for me.
    Or the door.
    _Probably_ the door.... _right??_
But i stepped back, pulling the door closed behind me.
Realizing as the latch clicked, that i'd not turned the light off.
    Damn!
I had no issue catching a mouse or smashing a bug but when a bug has developed an attack strategy...? I'm re-grouping and at least _discussing_ it with some reinforcements.
But the air had caught the door a bit and it had slammed, and taking my step back was just enough (honestly) adrenaline-boosted to be more of a _stomp._
My father's voice up the stairs, _"What are you moving or dropping? Did you fall? Is everything alright?"_
I called back down, _'Everything's fine. It's just a huge cockroa---'_
_"HUSH! I'm coming up there."_ He was upstairs by then, whispering, urgently, _"Were you going to say a cockroach is what all that noise was?"_
I nodded & started to explain, but he interrupted, *_"Never_*_ mention you saw a roach in this house when your mother is Home. You just come tell me & i'll deal with it. Mention it to _*_her_*_ when you're out somewhere. Public. In a group of people."_
_That's_ when i learned about Mother's OTT *_hatred_* of roaches. Not "fear". *Hatred.*
_'Papa, i'm perfectly capable of "dealing with" a bug. But _this_ is this big, i _heard_ it walking. And it _flies,_ which i was _not_ expecting.'_
I was never a kid for exaggerating, but Papa's looking at me like, _"Why are _*_you_*_ lyin' about a bug?"_
So i reached over and swung the door open, and pointed to the pipe that vented the dryer from down stairs.
It was there, watching my father & me. Papa said, "Huh... How'd you know it was on the pipe? I thought you said it flew at you."_
_'Yes & when i closed the door, it musta detoured to the pipe, because i heard it hit the thing and its feet tapping as it climbed up.'_ The why-are-you-lying look again. _'How would i know where to point? O. No. It was on the _*_wall_*_ when i came in.'_
    Papa still with the _look._
And about that time, it launched itself towards us. Papa and i stepped back in unison and closed the door.
Then Papa's quiet, _"Damn."_ startling me into turning towards him because my father _never_ cussed! Apologetic look and he says, _"The light's still on."_
    _'Yeah. I realized that, too.-_
Then, _"You _*_can_*_ hear it land on that pipe, can't ya?"_ as we listened to its feet scrabbling up the metal.
    _"Well..."_
_'I was thinking about where's your shotgun...?'_
Startled him. Not sure we kids were supposed to know he had one for his every three or four year duck hunt with Mother's brothers. But he recovered, gave me a half-smile.
_"Naw, we won't be needing that..."_ The smile faded and then a _very_ quiet, _"not yet anyway."_
Then. _"Let me think on this. We'll keep the door closed -- like _*_that_*_ matters. Don't worry about the light tonight. And, Nonn? Do. Not. Mention. This. To. Your. Mother! We'll say you dropped some books."_

If you are ever in Miami go check out where the old zoo used to be on Key Biscayne.
Dozens of peacocks (and several other breeds including Canadian geese, various duck breeds, and several Sandhill Cranes) that are friendly and will eat from your hand.
Bring your good camera and an extra battery.
      Beware though.
There is a croc that lives around there and hangs out in the main lake.
But about peacocks.... they have a lot of nuisance qualities while having a lot of great qualities.

I had a HUGE palmetto bug on the outside of my livingroom screen. I got the wasp spray, it shoots 25 feet, 1/2 in and put the front door, gathered all my courage, took a deep breath, aimed and sprayed. before I could even lift my foot to get in the door that bitch turned and flew straight at my head! I ducked and ran inside. I HATE THEM

❤😂I was born and raised in West Africa and when i moved to FL i wondered why nobody was sitting on the beautiful grass!!😅 i love the wildlife here except for "palmetto bugs". They sure don't have that cute name where i come from and I've mastered a technique to placate them: vinegar spray bottle and a flip flop. I always give them a fair warning though: "you show up, you're dead"!

Bro I had this crazy idea to rescue a stag beetle out of my grandmothers swimming pool when I was young. This was before I knew the bite force of that thing. Don't ever try to rescue stag beetles as it will fucking hurt. Basically felt like a damn crab pinch but worse lol.

Just found out what has been torturing me for years while doing yard work in South FL...Electric Ants also called "Little Fire Ants". Different from regular fire ants. They are tiny and drop on you from trees and jump on you when you brush against a plant that's infested with them. They sting initially and leave pink bumps on your skin that itch for a week. It's amazing how such a small bug can cause so much pain and discomfort. Much worse than a noseeum bite.

If you're from Florida and for some time, I say this because I've not seen one of these for awhile, you may have seen a roach lookin' bug usually large, and here it is,with two arms protruding or extending from either side and under the front of it around it's head kinda' crooked lie your arms stuck out straight in front with your elbows pointed outwards. They were scary but never scared. I figured they got too much of the old heavy thick white fog they use ta spray to control mosquitoes. I wonder cause we used to chase those trucks thru the neighborhood in the street. Good thing their weren't much traffic then cause you couldn't see your own nose in that fog. When family came to visit from up north we didn't go to any attraction, there were alot before disney,we waited for the mosquito truck, you couldn't miss it,loud as hell.I wonder,I don't have cancer, hey, you think? Naw,that's stupid thinkin'. Some unrelated chemicals might cure a deadly disease by breathing it. Yea,maybe mikey will like it. But I guess that bug didn't. If anybody remembers those bug trucks,do you happen to know what, other than mosquito repellent, was in that thick white fog, share it in the comments and,oh yea,if you remember that bug and it's name.
