DIY Star Wars Podracer from Household Junk :: Scratch-building a desert speeder with a Rodian pilot

- I'm new to scratch building but loving every minute of it so far! In this first video I make a scratch-built podracer from old plastic bottles, guitar string, a coat hanger, clay, and even a Tic-Tac container. The energy binders also light up, which is kinda neat!
I was inspired by other builders here on UA-cam, particularly these guys here:
Boylei Hobby Time: / boyleihobbytime
Studson Studio: / @studsonstudio
So thank you very much for the inspiration and building tips! Can't wait for my next one! And in case you want to drop by an say hi, you can find me on Instagram here: gameyybuilds
Thanks for watching!
CHAPTERS:
00:00 The inspiration
00:31 The basic shape
06:33 Wiring the energy binders
07:43 Building the pod
09:11 Priming and painting
12:15 Sculpting the pilot
15:00 Building the base
16:25 The finished product
Apologies for the constant changing brightness levels. I realized halfway through filming this that my camera settings weren't correct. Also, the low resolution! So much to learn about doing video... The next will be better!
You forgot to give credit to Bill Making stuff, Scratch bashing and Eric’s workshop.
But that’s okay
Btw i liked and subbed. Your videos are really good
The puns are strong with this one. Your scripting is top tier! Great video!
Thanks a ton! Love your work and your videos! Would've never started doing this had it not been for you and Boylei Hobby Time. It's pretty wild that you both found my teeny tiny channel today!
Studson himself!
Helloooooo ❤❤❤
Can’t believe I’m just now seeing this! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent build and video. Subbed. Looking forward to more.
Thanks so much, you are one of the guys that inspired me to try my hand and scratchbuilding and your support means a lot!
*You are a true craftsman mate. Love all of your exceptional masterpieces. :)*
Hello hello! I'm surprised it took UA-cam so long to recommend gameyy's channel to me, I've been watching your and stud's videos for over a year now and lots of other crafters and scratchbuilders too. Love love love watching what you guys do, absolutely incredible!
The puns are strong with this one!
This podracer would definitely make Sebulba nervous
You have an excellent eye for repurposing. Your model would be right at home in the SW Universe!
900th Like!
😒i envy you gamey, i mean like your so resourceful, i could never make something like you can, especially out of scratch, i wish i could make something like you, but i know i never could but at least i can watch you! so keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got here but I gotta say that this is awesome!
I think a few greeblies thrown on the clothespins would have been just enough to make them not look like clothespins anymore. Super fun build to watch though!
I've been binging your videos for a few hours and I like the work you do. You've mentioned Boylei a few times... and to be honest I like your work much more. His pieces lack personality and are more often than not model kits slapped on a base. I feel you have a better handle on the nuances of a piece that gives it a sense of realism.
I love the little pilot!
Really impressive to see how far youre come. I'm learning to scratchbuild myself. Im a fan of loads of you wonderful artisans of junk. But i gotta say, you gameyy are my main inspiration.
Now it makes sense why you remind me so much of Boylei, lol. Great work! After seeing that random suggestion that popped up about the mech, I just had to start at the bottom of your videos list so I could catch all the stories of your world through your creations. :D
It has afterBurners😳😳!!!!!!!!!! That is cool
Awesome job bro, love the format and commentary, and your the build was awesome throughout. I was honestly surprised at the number of subscribers from the quality of the video, but now you've got another one. Keep up the good work my man
Thanks so much! Not too caught up in youtube numbers at the moment, just enjoying making my models and posting videos!
Awesome GB! You’re deserving of a metric tonne more subs!
Working on it! Thanks for all your comments!
@@gameyybuilds trying to feed the algorithm for ya sir🤓👍
Loved the vid and commentary Great weathering thax for the tips 😊😊😊😊
Flappy things = variable afterburner exhaust nozzle, they help prevent back pressure and also fully adjustable for maximum exhaust acceleration 👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
@@gameyybuilds no worries 👍🏼 thanks for the awesome vid 👌🏼
Great build. And I'm glad to have gone back to your early work to see how good you are and how also your progress. Keep up the good work sir.
I just laughed all the way through . I love the build, and the running commentary was an excellent mix of descriptive detail on what/where/why/when and who + the witty comments etc. Rock on brother.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I also stared at those star wars books in Borders
The pod racing scene was a "Hallmark of cinema"? Pretty bold claim. Great video btw 👌
I stand by that claim! It’s aged very well and has been the inspiration for many other race scenes, even if the movie as a whole left much to be desired!
That little alien dude is cute. I love this build. Subbed!
Thanks!
👍👍😎🍿 I enjoyed this video
Thanks!
creative its good
Me encanta tu trabajo!, gracias por hacer este canal.
Turned out awesome 👍.
Amazing Work!
Glad you think so!
7:25 Those are Thrust Vectoring Baffles, obviously! Gah! Kids these days! :D
nice result
Thanks! I loved your podracer too!
Great stuff man! :))
I just discovered your channel and I've loved all the videos I've watched to this point, keep up the good work. I also loved they subtle Star Wars reference at 2:05...well played :)
Very cool. Plz keep them coming!
Outstanding narration!
Jet engine lesson; basically, starting at the front, the fan blades at the intake are called the compressor blades, (not the turbine) which suck in the air and (you guessed it) compress it before fuel is added and ignited in the combustion chamber. The exhaust gasses passes through another set of fan blades, which are called the turbine blades, and which in turn, drive the compressor blades. The exhaust then exits the back of the engine through what are called ejector flaps (the trapezoid shaped flaps you didn’t know the term for). On military planes, there’s a secondary combustion chamber between the turbine and ejector flaps, which is called the afterburner.
Cool! Thank you for the jet engine lesson! Fascinating info!
It was great-the Binders really look nice! And the clothespins really did come out okay.
This is awesome! In my opinion, this is the best scratch build podracer I have seen yet! (Although I do still like those other guys) Keep up the good work!
Wow, thanks!
Pretty cool build man
Thank you!
I love this!!! keep up the amazing work!! 😁
Thanks Ryan!
That is a great looking Pod Racer, looks fantastic, nice 👍 👍 👍
Thanks!
Awesome looking pod racer. It's great to watch the process and see it go from bits and stuff to a painted come to life racer. It definitely looks like it should be on the course on Tatooine. Great build. 👍
Dude sweet! I definitely think the best part of episode 1 was the pod racing. This thing is cool
Cool, thanks!
fantastic
Great build! Looks awesome!
Thanks!
success ..
Soo gomma. Do one. And wooww. Wooow
Thank you!
Wow amazing, simple but rock ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks 😊
Great job….
Thank you!
You did a amazing job.
Thanks! And I wish you and your 60+ cats all the best!
I'm surprised this video doesn't have way more views. It's a great video!
Build turned out awesome! Get yourself some CA glue accelerant. It will change your life.
Been in my cart for ages! I'm gonna pull the trigger! Thanks!
Sprinkle baking powder on the glue joints , it sets in a second and it’s as hard as glass
Pretty awesome, man. Honestly. I like the choice of green. And the yellow and red worked out a lot better than I than I thought untill I saw the final. Can't wait for more videos.
Thank you! New video should be out next week!
That came out totally awesome buddy keep the cool stuff coming.
Thanks!
wow great job love this
Thanks!
@@gameyybuilds you're welcome.. Ive been loving this type of stuff lately.. if you are interested, we would love to have you on our show some time, if you are interested :)
You guys inspired me to do a digital kitbashed Ork Podracer Diorama. Made my first racer tonight.
Awesome! You gonna upload a video of it?
This looks so good, I’m so inspired to try and make one myself haha
Go for it!
The commentary 🤣
This is an awesome pod racer 😻
Thanks Carrie!
Fun! I hope you do more Star Wars pieces. I'd love to see a scratch build sandcrawler, I've always wanted to make one.
Yes! I’ve been considering this!
@@gameyybuilds I'd be down to do one too for my channel if you're down to do a collab!
Cool
Man the dust clouds won me over in this build, it certainly conveyed the speed of the racer, I also loved the color choices for the engines, they remind me of ww2 planes, overall very well done, you just gained another subscriber.
Thanks so much! And yeah I was definitely trying to convey the movement here, which was the main reason for making the podracer sit on the base at a slanted angle and adding the dust. Appreciate your feedback!
earned a sub, nice stuff.
Thank you Bradon!
since you like the SW cut-away book, you should check out the Art of Episode 1. It's about 50x better than the movie.
I will check it out! Thanks!
New sub. love your commentary 😀
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the vids!
This came out really well! I'm subscribing!
Thanks for the subscription Ann!
STELLAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey I made a podracer too... against my better judgement
Hi Bill! Love your channel! Thanks for stopping by!
it looks so cool!!!!!!!!!!i still want da kitty's. ] :
Spoiler alert the rubbish bounty hunter that Han shot first, Greedo is the same alien who was Anakin's friend, not just the same race but the actual same guy!
excelente!! me suscribo saludos
Thanks!
MAN i wanna be you ya got so many cats!!!!!!!!!i want da kitty's!!!!!!!
Not bad.
If I may, the racers in the movie were typically much bigger than what you made, meaning while it's probably functional in universe, your racer is SUPER tiny. The guy should have been maybe a fourth of his size if you wanted to make it more scale accurate.
Put lights in the turbines and add lights for the exhaust.
Cool build, I’m sad the highest resolution for this video seems to be 480p
Yep… my first video and I had no idea what I was doing
I so wish that 'using the Force' did involve going "Uuuurrrghhh...!" [and probably making a straining poo face as well] - wouldn't Star Wars just be amazing if they did that..?!!
💯
Thunderpod II?
Can you make something out of edible components. Thinking of those tic tacs
Just 29 cats. I have over 60.
16:49
Should have kept lighter fuel in lighters and have real flames coming out.
480p... bruh
Yeah I’m all about quality
You can’t know the name of the Rodian race and ignore that the two characters you’re mentioning are the one and only Greedo. Obvious comment bait. I’m here to serve. 😅
It’s hilarious to me than in such a vast galaxy with thousands of planets and species, everyone seems to cross paths! 😂
@@gameyybuilds And lose memory of meeting. 😂
@@gameyybuilds Actually the most funny part is that just a few thousand planets are inhabited. A typical Galaxy such as ours has 400 billion star systems containing thousands of billions planets. ☺️
like a lot of youtube scratchers i have notice that you also do not know how to use a knife .on several sections of your video you are seen cutting towards your hands.mainly the part between thumb and first finger .not only will you lose blood ...and quite a lot if you hit a vien which the hands have lots of ...but also you will hit tendons and guiders which make your hands move .re watch the land scape carving section ...youll see what i mean .stay safe podder .
You're absolutely right, and actually I cut myself on my last build doing just this thing. Unfortunately however, I find that often the proper way/direction/angle of cutting feels very awkward and unnatural, especially when working with small pieces that are difficult to hold down. Thanks for looking out, though!
29 cats... wut
Seriously though.
Are the engines the pods of the podracer or is the cockpit the pod?
I will never sleep soundly until I find the answer. 🤣🫣
Loved the video.
Amazing build as always.
I thoroughly enjoy what you make and your editing is absolutely incredible too.
I hope the subs start pouring in soon. You deserve so so so much more.
The note in the intro about copying homework took me out, that was funny! 😅
Lots love, looking forward to your future projects!
