Alot of scenes were skipped in the anime that were in the light novel. Like how Kotori mentioned that Shidou was a bit suicidal after being abandoned by his real mom and adopted into her family. So I can only assume they became close during that time period. They could be in a relationship in the future but for now they are siblings. The only reason they are on a date is to contribute to the Origami plot and seal her powers They also skipped the story of how she got her black ribbons that she got from Shidou the day of the fire and became a spirit. (Via flashback) While they don’t explain too much about becoming a spirit at that point in the novel, they do say she accepted the power impress Shidou and prove she isn’t weak. This flashback was supposed to happen when origami attacked Kotori. So yeah there was alot skipped and I recommend you do read the light novel if you haven’t already.
